This is why I’m hesitant to get an Apple Watch. I’m in nursing school and will graduate next May, so it will get a lot of work and abuse. I can’t stand scratched watch faces. I’ll have to do more research on them before I decide.

And people wonder why the prices go up every year.

I agree - that’s pretty crappy to do.

I would likely try the toothpaste trick THEN put a protector on it. I’m thinking it wouldn’t matter much if the coating was removed if it was covered afterward.

And I’d likely buy AppleCare.

Speaking of that, does AppleCare cover damage like this, and can you get it on devices even if they are purchased through AT&T?

I just can’t justify the stainless, and honestly, even though the screen is a lot better, the scuffed up stainless drives me NUTS. I’ve never had a scratch or scuff on one of my aluminum watches, but my 1 stainless I bought got scuffed just from having a lightweight (VERY lightweight) bracelet next to it.

You can add AppleCare to your watch now for $79 or $3.99/mo. It adds up to 2 “incidents of accidental damage.” Then you can get it fixed for $69.

I would do that vs. the fraudulent suggestions above of claiming it arrived damaged, etc.

Return it! Win - Win since they can fix it at barely no cost and you get a new one.

ABSOLUTELY GUTTED - Doesn't quite cut it

Gently brushed the edge of my kitchen counter top this morning and have scratched the face at the 12 o'clock position on the glass.....so annoyed as regularly caught my series 2/3 and didn't really get damaged.

Just ordered some screen protectors in the hope that it covers it as much as possible.....

Any other ideas on how to remove them would be appreciated....

Yikes, glad I got stainless now for the sapphire

This is my thought. I've had three watches with Ion-X glass and two of them had scratches (the third was a replacement Apple sent instead of downgrading my current watch from OS 5). Looking forward to several years of scratch-free usage with my Series 4.

In my view you have 3 options:

1 - Screen protector, deal with it
2 - Purchase AppleCare+ and quickly. The longer you leave it the longer you may need to visit a store for them to verify the device condition. Do it now. Then wait a week/several weeks then claim on accidental damage.
3 - Toothpaste etc.

You aren't going to get away with claiming it came like that.

Which is why so many return policies have become more difficult.

When people game the system and don't operate in good faith, the system becomes more difficult for everyone.

I would purpose that the product is not high enough quality to endure a single knock against a kitchen counter. And I'm supposed to use this thing for a few years and expect it to maintain it's integrity? Either way, there are also products that come semi defective, with a scratch, etc. All part of the game.

There are many games in society and life, they are what they are, and some choose to ignore them, some choose to benefit from them. A simple mistake is forgivable, and I bet OP will be more careful with his watch going forward.

And yet... Apple's return policy for the watch has been the same for the past few years since it launched and I doubt it's going to change because people occasionally return in the first few DAYS for ANY reason unless it's because they're returning them and not purchasing replacements because the product is inferior. It's in their best interests to take the merchandise back, really.

I mean, how is the OP buying AC+ after damaging the merchandise, then filing a claim a short while later any more honest? It's like buying car insurance after you total the car, then filing a claim saying it happened a week later.

If you return it saying it was already scratched, yes, it's untrue, but so is getting AC+ after you damaged it and really, at this point, they just want sales and know some will come back for WHATEVER reason.

Ouch that is painful. I did that to a brand new Series 3 last year too. Part of the reason why I went with a Stainless Steel one this year.

Note: I have never owned any AW but a SS model for this very reason. I know they cost more, but I cannot recommend them enough. I only know one person personally who has damaged the screen of a SS watch and it was a high drop onto a ceramic tile floor that landed face down, shattering the crystal. And, I know a lot of people with Apple Watches.

Go SS when you replace this one, OP. You'll be glad you did.

I would return it and say it got scratched way to easy... and explain that you had AW before did the same things and it was fine. heck I got a scratch on my SS S3 watch (way harder to do), and Apple replaced the whole thing for free outside of the return policy.

just be truthful to them, and I am sure they will replace it.

People rationalize poor behavior all the time. If someone is comfortable lying to save some money after his own mistake, the watch isn't the semi-defective entity in that scenario.

They've definitely made the ion stuff less durable. I don't have any scratches on my original release series 0. Got hubby a sport 4 on sunday morning... sunday evening it had a scratch! WTF!?
