Many of these people, here, do not care about a little fraud:p

We're talking about Apple here... company that refuses to admit they have seriously defective keyboards in 2000-dollar MacBook Pros, for god's sake. LOL.

The company of "you're holding it wrong."

I love my Apple loot, don't misunderstand me, but at the end of the day, if you take an item to them and you lodge a complaint and they take a return, well... they didn't mind taking a return, did they?

It would be rather silly to be talking about ethics and Apple in the same sentence when it comes to stuff like defects.

Now, do I advocate doing to the store and stuffing your pockets with their products, then leaving without paying? Of course not!

But, if you paid for an item and Apple is willing to return the item and give you another items, everyone is satisfied. They know not everyone is being 100% about stuff like scratched screens, you know.

This is why I’m hesitant to get an Apple Watch. I’m in nursing school and will graduate next May, so it will get a lot of work and abuse. I can’t stand scratched watch faces. I’ll have to do more research on them before I decide.

If you can swing it get the SS version. I've used a series 0 SS since 2015 in the ER and only the SS is scratched while the display glass remains flawless...

No matter how you describe it, it is still fraud!

I got a visible scratch on my series 3 aluminum last year, about a month after buying it. I found a decent screen protector which covered it. It was just one of the cheap film ones off Amazon.

Sounds like you're trying justify fraud by saying Apple has done worse. While many in society do this, the fact remains that its still wrong to damage something and attempt to return it. Its immaterial in how Apple acts, and in fact if it is a concern then I question why you giving money to apple in the first place

Yeah, that's a bummer - I think I'd roll the dice, keep my karma positive, and walk it into an Apple store and see what they say. You don't even have to go into details, just you got your watch, set it up, was excited and just wearing it around the house and managed to scratch it (which is totally the truth).

The toothpaste does help (or other polishing compounds), people are right, it's basically leveling the coating down to the scratch (not unlike the clearcoat on a vehicle when removing a scratch), but I'd rather do that vs. the scratch being so visible. YMMV.

People rationalize poor behavior all the time. If someone is comfortable lying to save some money after his own mistake, the watch isn't the semi-defective entity in that scenario.

Just providing an example of what could be proposed if he were to go about doing that. I'm not saying that would be the only thing I would do myself, but it's certainty an option, and likely the most beneficial one, if the scratches seriously bother him and will continue to for years to come.

Not for me to decide, just offering my opinion.

I would 100% tell them it arrived damaged and try to return.

What you said was to tell Apple it arrived damaged. That *is* fraud. The wearer damaged the watch. Not Apple. Not the delivery service. It’s unfortunate, but it does not fall into the realm of an acceptable return.

I think Apple would let you exchange it for the stainless steel. The screen on the aluminum model is way too fragile and you didn’t realize that when you bought it.

Many credit cards offer accidental damage protection for a certain number of days after purchase. Did you by chance make your purchase with a CC offering such protection? I've taken advantage of this sort of benefit several times in the past without issue....

As a collector of actual watches mostly mechanical (Apple Watch on right real watch on left) may I suggest polywatch.

I scratched my series one for the first time the other day and polished it out.

Sapphire all the way, especially for something on the end of your arm waving around all over the place!
Yep. I buy the SS models more for the sapphire than the stainless case. Having owned both aluminum and stainless steel, the sapphire makes a huge difference.

The Oleophobic coating on either watch crystal will scratch. Even the low quality Sapphire Apple uses.

It’s unfortunate. But a screen protector really should help you in this situation to conceal it. And I don’t mean to make you feel worse about the situation, but this is why I opt for the Sapphire display to avoid issues like this. I don’t trust the Ion-X Glass.
Sorry for the silly question, but I looked on the apple web site and there is nothing about choosing between sapphire and ion-x screen. Is it by case type?

Many people go for years without scratches. I've worn my S0 aluminum sport every day since July, 2015 and it still looks perfect. I've definitely smacked it into things a few times here and there. I don't have any protection on it either. Of course since I wrote this I will probably scratch the S4 the day I buy it, so I guess I better pony up for AppleCare +. :(

Yep. Sapphire is on Stainless. Ion-X is on aluminum. I scratched my aluminum Series 3 on the wall of a pool. My wife has an inch long scratch on hers too. No idea where she got it. Ion-X is cheaper but you get what you pay for.

Oh, I've never returned something damaged like the OP's item. I am just discussing the issue in general.

Pretty sure that if he went in, said he was highly disappointed with how easily this thing could be damaged and asked for an exchange to get the stainless because he had no idea this new glass would be so fragile, he'd be accommodated.

OK Thanks. Wow, that's a big price difference! Rather just buy a case. ;)

Possibly. And that isn’t really dishonest. But flat out saying it arrived damaged, which was the initial suggestion, is in fact dishonest.
