Brightness is great and no I can't notice the nits 😂 . I'm not sure what you mean about brightness differences across the panels?
My G9P was way bright than my sis' GVC (16 Pro). Both maxed out with auto brightness OFF. Mine was like 30% more bright. The same I can say with my mother's vanilla 16. Her's is with BOE and it's even worse.

Ah OK. I don't have my 16PM to compare as I sold it some months ago. I can compare against my wife's 16PM, I'm pretty sure it'll be quite similar.

Got my first two delivered:

  • 17 Pro Max - busted screen, top half white, bottom half green, major blue tint off axis, on my way to apple store to return it.
  • 17 Pro - pristine, perfect screen (keeping this one)
Still to go:
  • Cloud White Air - fingers crossed
  • Sky Blue Air - fingers crossed

Classic Pro Max issues. No idea why it's so hard compared to base Pro.
Seriously.. I kinda expected it given last year's odyssey, but I'm always surprised at how none of the YouTubers point this out. Could be apple hand picks from a batch of perfect displays to send them or they just don't notice, but I don't see issues on their YouTube videos, so not sure. But this 17 Pro Max has one of the worst ones I've seen so far. Good riddance.

Well, you got at least one good one so thumbs up for that. Curious whether it is Samsung or LG.

Update.

Got the Cloud White Air, also busted screen. Massive blue shift at any angle. Lmao.

Tally so far:
  • 17 Pro Max - busted screen: uneven tint across display, massive blue shift
  • 17 Pro - pristine, perfect screen (keeping this one)
  • Cloud White Air - busted screen: massive blue shift
Still to go:
  • Sky Blue Air - fingers crossed, on its way

how is the brightness on your good unit 17P? Appreciably better than whatever 16 model you had?

The 17P has a great screen. Nice, bright and warm. No blue shift or weird tints at any angles. A+.

I came from 16 Plus which had a B+ screen so this is def better. And love the smaller size.

probably doesn't matter but which color and GB for the 17P?

Also let us know if you find out what screen mfr you got/get.

And I will say I'm not holding my breath for the Sky Blue Air, given 2 out of 3 iPhone 17s have had really bad displays, the odds are high that the Sky Blue Air will also have a bad display as well.

Got my 17 in sage today. It has a G9p display from Samsung. I compared it to a 16pm with g3h from Lg. Samsung is a little warmer but the viewing angles are better. The brightness in sunlight is better than 16pm.

My blue Air just arrived, restoring from backup so will be a bit.

True Tone does a good job masking possible uniformity issues but so far I'm not seeing anything glaring on that front

fingers crossed

My 16Plus (Samsung) display is beautiful so I hope it's around in the ball park of that.

loving the ergonomics of this thin thing.

Just got my Sky blue Air and it’s going straight back to Apple. Little backstory:

I had the 14 Pro, great display. Upgraded to the 15 Pro and it had instantly noticeable green tint from the bottom when tilted. Upgraded to the 16 Pro which I’m currently using because return wasn’t an option at the time and this has a green tint so bad when tilted, that the 15 Pro looked like it had a perfect display. So bad.
Now I got the Air and it was game over as soon as I saw the apple logo on start up and tilted the screen, same dogs**t as the 16 Pro. Even has some red tint on the top of the screen as a bonus.

Not sure what to do now. I really want to get rid of the 16 Pro, so I guess it’s lottery time.

awesome, assuming I like the Air model I think I got a keeper of a screen. It's uniform and crisp as my first impression.
Ran diagnostics, confirm its GVC: LG.

Left is my 16Plus Samsung for comparison

this second pic is with auto brightness off, I'm assuming these devices are configured different ABL levels:

I would've guessed LG because it honestly looks more vibrant to me with photos / 3d like popping off the screen. hard to explain but doesn't seem like the same panel I had on my previous phone - which I had no issues with either btw.

Samsung looks a little flatter. Probably virtually near impossible if not impossible to tell on this photo I took with my mini 7, but left 16+ right Air. The colors are slightly more saturated and the edges are sharper going back and forth (to my eyes, and in person):

Off axis extreme angles is admitedly quite a bit dimmer directly compared against the Samsung where Samsung retains strong brightness, but I am not seeing a huge tint bias off axis of red like I did with the 16Pro that was not uniform straight on and that I returned around launch last year, and maybe I'm more forgiving since overall this seems good but seems less reduced dimness off axis. And that's not something I really care about tbh, it's just a 'giveaway' of which panel I thought I had taking a wild guess.

For whatever reason, just relieved I didn't get a BOE. Maybe that one will impress but on paper sounds like the worst option (negating the most obvious factor: panel lottery). Most relieved I didn't get two toned slop as my 16 Pro was.

Can someone remind me of the process to get that ioreg diagnostics on the computer?

...Dont you have to enter recovery mode / series of buttons or something?

Would be good to know for science and others.

How can I test to see which display I have?
1. settings, accessibility, touch, turn on AssistiveTouch
2. Change top menu so one of the options is Analytics
3. Tap the AssistiveTouch button and run Analytics
4. After about 2-3 minutes go into settings > privacy and security > analytics and improvements (near the bottom) > analytics data
5. Find the sysdiagnosis file, tap it to open it
6. Share and save it to iCloud Drive or wherever
7. Open files app, decompress sysdiagnose file and it will create a new folder
8. Open the new folder, go into IOReg
9. Open IODeviceTree.txt
10. search the word “panel” without the quotes
11. One of the entries will say something like raw-panel-serial and right next to it will start with G9N, G9P, GVC, GH3

a little more convoluted than plugging into 3utools but you can do this in store without a computer within about 3-4 minutes if you get the sequence down. This works on display models too if anyone wants to add DPs
