I have the same issue with 2 32GB grey 5s's I bought at launch online. All my previous iPhones (going back to the 3G) never had a problem like this (lucky I guess). I did a couple videos to hopefully help explain the point to people that can't see the issue. One shows my perfect iPhone5 screen, and the other my 5s with the vertical lines. They're here:

iPhone5 (good screen):
http://youtu.be/16WWn2egF1E

iPhone5s (bad screen):
http://youtu.be/aGdPg1VUEeo

I tried to do them both from the same height, they turned out a bit different but hopefully it's clear. Of course both have vertical and horizontal lines since screens are made up of pixels but on the 5s I think the vertical striping is pretty visible.

The lines appear as shimmering at regular viewing distance to a set of good eyes, the video just shows it closer up.

I went into the local Apple Store and at first the genius said he could see it, but when he got a higher-up to check it out, then they both came back saying they couldn't see it at all. He said they could do a one time swap for me but if I had any other issues with the new phone I'd be out of luck. I opted to not chance that and wait until I could 'prove' the issue and come back later with more information.

It's frustrating to see the lines in videos, images, icons etc... when held closer than about a foot.

Your vids are perfect examples. That's how 3 of my 5s's were. Finally my 4th one (DNP serial #) is perfect! I also experienced the same thing during the iP5 launch last year. I had perfect screens on my 4 and 4s though..

Could this issue affect those with myopia/nearsightedness?

Compared to my iPhone 5 I'm noticing eye strain I didn't feel before now with the 5s...

I used that wallpaper again and did notice some faint flickering but only when I brought up control center.

I have nearsightedness but I think the eye strain is due the interlaced screen's flicker which is a secondary symptom of a bad display. I can clearly see the Facebook icon and other blues and greys flickering all the time. My friends thought I was crazy because they all got perfect screens on the first try but I've gone through 7 iPhones and all had interlacing. When I go back to the iPhone 4, the screen is so comfortable to look at. Colours are solid and sharp. Every time I look at my iPhone 5 screen, my head starts to hurt a little.

So my phone was perfect for almost 2 weeks. Absolutely NOOOOOOOOOO interlacing at ALL. Just yesterday, the lines on my screen are back worse than ever. Like my first device. How in the living **** is this happening? It creates such a headache inducing flicker on all colors.

Went to best buy today also to check out the iPad Air. Both display models, gray and white, had hideous yellow screens and HORRIBLE screen interlacing compared to the iPad 3 sitting next to them. Seriously, I'm 100% done with Apple. That was the next product I was going to buy but now I have no interest whatsoever.

I can't even look at my phone without seeing these hideous lines. It makes me hate this $450 product in my hands.

I agree, the premium price vs the product is nothing more than an illusion that apple use for their own gain.
Aluminium is NOT a premium material just like their screens. Everything is outsourced and the gamble between getting a LG, Sharp or Samsung screen is just to great.
I'm seriously looking at a nexus 5 ATM.

Ill have to agree with everyone here, this issue really really sucks. It makes it seem as the actual resolution is lower. When I had the 4s and a good 5 screen I marveled at the fact that no matter how close I looked, I could not see lines.
Now the two 5s that I have had have this crappy issue. THis new one i have is starting to freeze and glitch, so ill have a replacement sometime today...but im not hopeful of my prospects since it seems that most of the 5s have this problem now.
Its kinda maddening to think that somebody up top knows of this issue but made no changes to rectify it between the 5 and now...

I notice it on my 5S. Never saw it on my 4S. What is odd is that it seems to be intermittent. Perhaps this issue could be resolved by a firmware update.

Awful lines. Really annoying. Causes headaches.

I've had this issue since the 4s. It is so annoying and should not exist in such a expensive product. I went thru several on the 4s, but finally gave up. I got the 5 and went thru at least 8. I finally got a good 5, but then the power button stopped working and got a exchange. I got the lines back. Now I've got the 5s and I've already been thru 2 phones that have the problem. My third try is arriving next week. I'm not very hopeful.

Replace, if not happy with replacement, replace again.
No need to be scared:)

5S Silver AT&T 32 - F1 - No issues. Used the cool flicker photo and nada. No lines that I can see on my screen. Looks stunning actually.

This screen interlacing is NOT an issue. Its suppose to look like that. Can you people stop your whining and just enjoy your phoens?

I would replace it. I replaced mine with yellowing. No hassle, replicate the problem @ the genius bar.

It's best to remember that display quality issues have plagued Apples iPhone's and iPads for some time. If you just ignore it you'll be happier.

This is an issue. Maybe you can't see it. But it's there. But. I finally won the iphone lottery. Got a good one after 3 tries.

No, it's not supposed to look like that. It's just a common flaw. It's still a flaw. There are iPhones out there that are perfect. I used to have an iPhone with a perfect screen. I still kinda miss it, but as long as you're not specifically looking for the lines, you won't see them.

Not sure what the deal is but mine started showing this issue. It's not very noticeable from day to day use and I have to "look for it" but sometimes during fast animations, I see the lines. Not sure if I should swap it or not at this point. Everything else is fine.

This is my problem as well. I see it especially in the grey bar in Maps, the blue bar in Facebook, etc. Sometimes it is more obvious than others.

I don't think I'd have any luck getting a replacement as I'm outside of my 14 day period. Apparently the issue is fairly common so there's no telling if the replacement would be any better, or have another defect.

Took these with my iPad Air. Only thing I have to take pics with. Lol Not sure what to make of it.

How seeable is this issue? After reading some posts and mainly after watching those two comparison videos I checked a 5S, and can't really notice anything. Is it obvious? I mean, should I notice immediately?
