Hey guys,

I’m on the iPad Pro 2018 12.9. I’ve had every version of the Pro and at some stage or another, they begin to stutter. Some days, I’ll wake up, try to use it in the morning and it won’t register a lot of my gestures. This seemed to be a big problem with my series 2 as it was doing it just at the 1 year mark. I reinstalled my software, found it got better for a while but begun to do it again.

Since I bought the 2018 version, I’ve had nothing but a buttery smooth experience except for this morning when it started happening again. Surely it can’t be a hardware problem with every device that I’ve bought? Just wondering if anyone else has experienced it.

I have this problem too. If I close the apps it helps. Apple says that closing apps shouldn’t matter. My real world experience seems to support the idea that these machines need more ram.

[doublepost=1553035423][/doublepost]I’ve noticed this if I am running Blackberry Work specifically. If I close that app the stutter is gone.

Welcome to the club :( It looks like you're experiencing the new widespread iPad hardware problem affecting all iPads including Pros and 2018's. It's not connected to screen protectors. It's not connected to Pro Motion, brightness control or any iOS updates or any apps you have installed. Sometimes it looks like it does but with time you see it's coincidental.

Apple does not accept this issue nor their Genius Bar does. They can replace it under warranty but you can get the iPad with the same problem (as I did) and if you're out of warranty they'll decline.

And what do you know? It started again this morning on the replacement they gave me a couple of months ago. I will not relent - I have AppleCare and will get it replaced 100 times if I have to. I paid over $2000 for this machine which is now my compute replacement. How can they not identify this as an issue? Can we get the attention of someone from here to write an article?

It looks like it's a hardware issue connected with touch screen, static electricity and/or accelerometer. Seems to get worse when you charge your iPad and rub it with your hands or clothes. It develops on 2nd or 3rd month for the refurbished iPad and may start on 9-12th month for the new iPad. It does affect replacements and all iPads from 2015 up to 2018.

I honestly don't know how we contact bloggers or a media outlet, that's a good idea! Probably you need some catchy email subject to catch their attention. Or better if you know a lawyer for a class action suit. I'm extremely annoyed by this and I will never bring more money to Apple until they fix or admit this issue. You're right - it's $2000 and they seem to be hiding this issue.

So I found MacRumors’ own Juli Clover’s twitter account and sent her a tweet. She was kind enough to respond, which is amazing. I really hope this is seen as important enough. It’s really frustrating, particularly when Apple doesn’t recognise it as a widespread issue.

When I first purchased my iPad Pro (2018) I had similar issues. It turned out to be due to the case I chose to put it in. Seemed to me the magnetic case was conflicting with the Apple Pencil dock functionality. As soon as I removed it from the case, my iPad was fine. I went through a few cases until I finally found one that did not cause an issue.

Bought my 12.9 IPP ~beginning of December. Started buying and putting apps on it.

Up until running Civ 6 I never noticed any temperature increase. Playing Civ 6 ~10 hours a day and it became 'toasty'; but the temperature always dropped to ambient quickly. No problems with glitches

It was January when it started glitching. Problem is mostly resolved with IOS 12.3 but it stutters every now and then. I've had it in a folio case since day 1; but it doesn't have a good pencil holder. It definitely is not attached magnetically when it's in the pencil holder fabric loop. It's not impossible that it connects/disconnects constantly.

It is only glitching with finger touch/taps - using the pencil (for instance in Goodnotes) remains probem free.

I have not had any of these issues.......probably the smoothest iPad experience I have ever had and I have had every generation of the iPad pro and also every iPad model besides the new non-pro ones that just came out and the first two ipads ever.

You are right I have also seen stuttering issues on past iPad pro models but this time most of everything is smooth unless the app developer didnt optimize their software correctly. Then again I do have the 1 tb LTE model with more ram that's actually usable.

Lucky you! When I brought my (second) problematic iPad Pro to Apple Store first thing they proposed to me instead of fixing is to buy their new iPad Pro 3rd gen LTE model for $1,600. I hope it's not the case here, when you have to pay $1,600 more to get your problems fixed.

I’ve had the problem since I first bought the ipad in early december, been through 4 software updates with no fix, tried turning off or changing every possible setting, even completely erased and set up as a new ipad and no fix. I am almost certain its a hardware issue. I returned to Apple and received a brand new replacement which is now having the same issues, possibly even worse now.
The issue occurs in every single app, on the homescreen and in settings.

Im now planning on asking for a refund this time which is a shame because I really like this ipad...

Check out these videos I have posted on youtube that show the issue:

Hey. Did you see Juli wrote a piece about it the other day? Hopefully it’s getting Apple’s attention. Mine luckily was fixed in the latest software update. This really sucks.

I am having this issue with my second generation 12.9 256gb version. It’s fairly obvious just using it for a few minutes that there is touch issues. Mine is pretty consistently failing to register touch. I have no Apple Pencil paired there is no case on my iPad and I have no screen protector.i am still under warranty but I’m concerned the replacement will act the same way. I am on apples newest software public release. It’s pretty much ruined my experience with the iPad it’s so disruptive. I think I am done with iPads too much money to have them act this way.

Well guys I think I have finally found a fix!
After 3 replacement iPad pros over the last 8 months and trying almost everything it turns out that all you need to do is go to Settings>Accessibility then disable Tap to Wake and restart your device.
Since doing this 2 weeks ago I have not noticed a single stutter, everything has been smooth.

I suggest that everybody try this for a week or so and report back on here to let us know how it goes.

Thanks for that.

Has anyone tried this?

I use tap to wake quite often, and disabling it would be annoying...but I haven't had this issue with my 2018 12.9".

Unfortunately there's no such options on iPads prior to 2018 that have the same problem with touch response. So I think this fix temporarily improves something specific (probably a software issue) related to 2018 models. I don't think it is related to the main hardware problem that affects all iPad models including 2018s.

My 3rd gen IPP 12.9 is getting close to unusable. Not sure I want to even bother sending it off for an attempted fix. Has anyone had theirs fixed by Apple and it actually work ok?

They can't fix it. If you're outside the warranty you're unlucky and may need to buy a new iPad (which can develop the same problem after 3-12 months, there's no guarantee). If you're inside the warranty period they can replace it for free but then the replacement (which is a refurb) can develop the same problem after 3 months. Some people reported they have a faulty replacement right in the store and had to get another one again.

The only real fix is for them to change the manufacturing process like they did with Mac butterfly keyboard.

If you have the keyboard attached, you just tap a key and it wakes with the “tap to wake” disabled.
