It seems to me that since the iPhone already has anaccelerometer, this app should work with any shoes without special hardware. In fact, apps like RunKeeper are already available on the App Store. What value will Nike provide?

Yes, we will just need to buy the new Nike shoes with a slot to fit your iPhone in. ;)

Just kidding, the image of tying strapping an iPhone to your shoe just cracked me up. I have no idea what can or can't be done with the iPhone accelerometer with this, if it would work just as well tied to your waist or on an armband.

I would prefer GPS (especially if the new iPod Touch has GPS), but I don't run on a treadmill.

Anyone seen La Grande Ville Bellevue (sp?) - the animation about a French kid that grows up to be a cyclist in the Tour de France?
Say you're on a bike, or on a treadmill - what's not to say that you couldn't use the iPhone screen as a rich UI/visual display of a race (I won't spoil the film, but you'll know if you've seen it).

Think like an ergo (Concept II) rower - or the bikes - you can have a race with computer opponents, or just have a pace speed competitor -

Once the way of passing the real time data from the bike/treadmill etc to the iPhone is worked out - the apps from this could be amazing. Sod little red or green LEDs - iPhone power! Then you could do AMAZING data analysis - think the amount of data you can date when you use a Concept II log card to show all the metrics/telemetry. There's a lot of potential to do something more than just Gym bound too - see motionbased.com etc.

It's a lot of development time.

This is great news (if true).

I never ran before about 18 months ago, and I have 1,536 miles on my Nike+ since I added it to my routine last September. It's a great motivator!
