As far as I'm concerned I was able to code everything in JavaScript and HTML5 completely removing Flash from my site. It's not done yet, but it's close and it runs better. So again as far as I'm concerned Flash can die right now. If I can do something without need for plugins I will do it. Less bloat is aways better.

ever? C'mon everything dies eventually. Flash is going away just like the floppy disk. It may be slow, but the death rattle has triggered. Websites need one thing: eyeballs. If people don't go to a site b/c it's flash heavy then that site has no reason for being.

Nooo!!! Not the Floppy disk puleeaaazeee!!! Grrr, I need a fix... Got some flash, bro?

The demise of Flash

Let's remember that the demise of Flash has only been hastened by Apple, not caused by Apple.

The demise of Flash was brought about by Adobe basically doing as little as possible to make Flash into a product that people love, and would continue to love.

Adobe reminds me of GM, prior to bankruptcy, where they would release incredibly low quality products and rely of people's patriotism to continue selling vehicles. Eventually the public got tired of GM's crappy vehicles and started buying Toyota's.

Not an exact analogy but close in a lot of respects. Adobe enjoyed a long period of dominance in the internet marketplace and got lazy. They squandered their opportunity to make even better versions and cement their position on top.

Adobe definitely did this to themselves, Apple was just the first company to really apply some pressure in order to improve the quality of experience for their users. Kudos to Apple for that.

Exactly...

Next we gonna hear is that some obscure message board / forums converted from Flash to HTML... Followed by bold breaking 1st page news on Mac Rumors and handful of "die flash" posts...

Freakn genius! :D

I honestly haven't had so much fun on forums in looooong time!

Excellent, glad you are enjoying your stay here, some more cake perhaps?

What tide is turning exactly?

Like honest question? Flash dominates the web by a large percentage...because one site switched to HTML5?

This isn't the first such announcement, the future direction is clear, anyone doing new development in flash exclusively is extremely short sighted. The fact that people are announcing abandoning flash work and redoing it in html is a clear death knell.

As far as flash domination. Drop advertisement out of that equation and you are likely already under 50%, drop Video and you are likely down to 10%.

I have been blocking flash as long as there has been flash, I only really care about making sure the 10% that actually has flash navigation offers a universal alternative and Video starts migrating.

I don't care if flash dominates advertising(and web games) forever, in fact I wish it did, because I never see flash ads.

Canvas is 2D and 3D capable. Once WebGL takes off, Canvas drawing will be accelerated as if it were native application. CSS3 already takes advantage of GPU acceleration for polygons:

PS. This links above works very well on the iPhone.

tbose links display blAck empty screens in opera mini, which im using right now.

[EDIT] that first link is interesting running in Safari 4.0.5 (desktop), though. more than anything, i'm trying to be excited about the future of site design taking the internet forward. but then i remember that it's developers who create internet sites, and that for every strong developer, there are 100 bad cheap ones. make no mistake that HTML5 (when it eventually becomes an integral part of the web) will be heavily used for the production of hyper annoying banner ads just as much as bad developers abuse the technology of flash today. then i also remember that companies like Apple, the company that brought us iWeb to litter the internet with clone geocities-like websites that any soccer-mom could use, tries to sell and push the internet for their benifit by means of slanderous lies and blatant hypocrisy.

HTML5/WebGL is interesting, i'm looking forward to it, but it sure as hell isn't anywhere close to being as advanced as Flash at this point, and perhaps never will.

Yeah, but the bigger argument seems to be against Flash video.

Flash ads, while annoying, won't be disappearing. They will be replaced by static ads if they can't be viewed on mobile devices sure. Also, website have already replaced their typical sites with app versions where they can put ads there as well.

Flash sure, it could die...but lets just say i think the worst is it'll lose market share.

But what good is a Flash ad if no one is looking at it? TV shows get cancelled b/c they lose just enough marketshare to not be profitable. Same will happen to Flash. It's actualy starting w/ mobile devices.

as I was reading this page lol. Most likely caused by the Apphole video link in the other tab powered by flash.

That must be the number one visited site in order to kill off flash ...

I'm sure Adobe won't respond in anyway to this . They'll probably ask, just like 99% of the people hearing of scribd for the first time - What the f*** is scribd.com?

i have to admit, i had no idea what was scribd.com before seeing this article. i mean, after reviewing their site it's clear that it should never have been developed with Flash to begin with. so now they want points for dropping Flash and jumping on the vaporware band wagon of HTML5 (which they don't need either)?

i'm starting to believe that macrumors is selectively choosing news to rile up the fanboys on their witch hunt for Flash, while completely ignoring other viral news (like the Ellen apology, the secret warrant, etc.) that doesn't paint such a nice picture of apple. but then i remember that macrumors serves up Flash banner ads and is not "optimized" for iPhone OS, and (to my knowledge) has never been officially invited to any apple media events, so they can't be completely biased, can they?

HTML5 is still not ready for main stream.

Flash isn't going anywhere for years if ever.

I would have agreed with you a year ago. But the demise of Flash is happening now, not at some indeterminate point in the future. It will be around for a while but it's going to be considered legacy technology by the end of the year.

Well, I'm betting these people just dropped flash in order to get some traffic :D

Yet another site that will get terrible slow because of HTML5. HTML5 is up to 5x slower on MacOS X in Safari 4.x than the Flash plugin. On the iPhone HTML5 is up to 30 times slower than even the crappy Flash Lite plugin on other smartphones.

8 polygons on HMTL5 let the iPad already crawl. What a great web experience. Right Steve?

Actually this is good. The more HTML5 out there, the bigger spotlight on Safari forcing Apple to improve Safari.

I think it's pretty funny that Scribd decide to drop Flash because it doesn't integrate well with the content around it. They could have fixed that a long time ago. I agree that they're jumping on the dump Flash bandwagon to get some traffic.

Remember the HD DVD vs BLU RAY? in web world will be HTML5 vs FLASH. And we all know that not always the best win. I remember when specialists declared that HD DVD was the best high definition compression for media entertainment and then, video games and porno choose a winner: BluRay.

Video Games and Porno? OMG! that's what FLASH is all about... we're screwed.

it doesn't matter... the war has begun.
