I have an 5S like SE right now. But for a while the battery got worse and worse. On Friday the phone started showing at the battery settings 'battery health -> service'. I need to buy a new phone. I was convinced to iPhone 11, I would like to have faceID, screen without bezels, great battery. The only disadvantage is a size. I like to use phone holding only in one hand. But, I have never tried anything bigger than 5S design. Since rumors about smaller and cheaper than pro iPhone 12 I was thinking about waiting till that day. Unfortunately I have to buy phone right now.

Do you think it is better to get SE and in October trade it for small 12? Or maybe, like always, it is better to wait some time with new generation before buying. So get the 11 for a year or more? I don't like buying right now. I like the world without phones! :) You know, I don't want to kick myself at the end of the year if the 12 5.4'' will be so magnificent etc, and I've got 11.

Thanks! I have checked average male's hand size and I am above that. I was playing with the 11 after release in App Store. I could reach most of the screen, even the control center. It was not comfortable comparing to the 5's size, but achievable.

I mean, if your present phone is dying then you don’t really have much of choice there. Just buy the 11 now if you’re able to handle the size and don’t look for 12 later. There’ll always be a better phone in the future. That logic is pointless if you need something right now as you mentioned you do.

If you can better off waiting 5 month for the iPhone 12 series.

If not the iPhone 11 is a solid phone great camera with night mode and ultra wide Face ID large screen and you have 6 colours to choose from 😊

Can't go wrong with either phone since they both have the latest chipset you'll be getting software updates for the next 5-6 years.

So just dying, not dead?

My iPhone 7 spent the last year like that (battery health -> service). Brand new iPhone 8 retail was too expensive given its age and supply on Apple Certified Refurb was non-existent. No carrier deals for upgrades either so I just carried a battery pack and charged the 7 at the office as I waited for the SE.

Since Friday it went really weird. I got 100%, unplug from charger. Replay to one messages, wrote like 10 words. And now it is 91%. Went outside for 30 min. No wi-fi enabled, low power mode on, I was walking in place where a have full mobile carriage coverage. When I return I had 25-30%. I just lost my patience and want to something new. In spite of all the battery issue, I have some dust in front camera, so I barely usable in face time.

I can gat SE or for 30% more new 11. I thing with this offer I could give the 11 a shot.

I think the obvious answer is depending on if you need the phone today or you can wait for the SE. In your situation, I probably would just opt for the XR and be done with it. But since you tend to not upgrade all that often, then I would upgrade to the SE, as you’ll have far more longer longevity in terms of software updates.

Pocket computers are either tools or fashion items.
A tool you buy when you need it.
A fashion item you buy when it’s just released and not owned by anybody else.

Now determine what the iPhone is for you and you have your answer.

if you have the budget go with the 11

you get better battery life, better camera

if you can wait for the 12 go wait, since the 11 is half a year

I'm just thinking out loud.

Agree, for me it is a tool. I use it for communicating, get push notification without. Saving time by reading on the way, or listing to podcast. The SE sounds like it has all of that and even more. But the 11 has better battery, which is important to me and it is more durable (best glass ever in iPhone and so on...). Maybe it could last longer.

I cannot wait. I could by now and trade with little loss in half a year.

just buy used if you just want to use it for that less of a time and buy a 12 immediately

May I suggest you to just get the battery changed for your current phone if everything else is working ok for you?

In a few months the new phone will be out and a year old devices will be sold at a lower price point with potentially bigger storage capacities.

The 11 will move into the XR gap probably but usually you get less storage options not more. Price will be roughly the same as what the XR is now. Or they may keep the XR. Or if they are bringing out more new devices in terms of size then the 11 and XR will likely go.

The base model generally switches to mid tier. And if 11 moves to XR gap, it will still be cheaper than the current price and the OP will get a better processor and camera.

I mean it’s upto the OP really but to me this seems to be the better option.

For me, the iPhone is also a tool.

I still delayed upgrading until this new SE2 was announced. The other tools available before were either poor value ($750 iPhone 8 256GB after 1st year price drop), too big (iPhone Xr & 11) or too expensive (iPhone Xs & 11 Pro).

Granted, my phone needs are light and I haven't needed to use my iPhone much while away from charger for long periods so I could afford to delay.

I’d go for the iPhone 11, see how you like it and then trade it in later this year if you don’t.

If you are even remotely interested in a iPhone 12 later this year, I’d suggest you just replace your battery. Apples mail in service is pretty quick if you can’t find a store open.

Thanks to all of you! While playing with my friends Galaxy S10e I have decided to try the 11. Maybe the phone will not be so huge and I could use it comfortably. When the small 12 launch, I will not mind waiting to see if there is any issue and switch to it. Or maybe I will like the size of 11 and use it as long as it will be alive or has iOS updates.

After a few days you’ll get use to the size of the phone.

I remember when I switched from my x to the xs max I got use to the size in a few day.

I’ll be going even bigger this year 6.7 inch iPhone 12 😎😂

congrats on the phone you’ll love the bigger screen.

Thanks, it nice to read that :)
I can't wait to use it. Since the X, I've wanted to try Face ID. I have preview of notification enable only when phone is unlocked. With current SE, when i unlock it with the rise to wake feature, place my finger to Touch ID to unlock. The notification scree automatically gone away. With Face ID after unlocking the notification screen stay on till swipe up. So a "game changer"!

Once you go Face ID you never go back it’s a game changer no need to worry about wet or dry fingers.

It even works in the dark.

another cool feature if your phone isn’t on silent and someone calls you it’ll drop the volume of the ring tone once you look at the screen.

Meanwhile I'm lazy and hate having to do that extra swipe and would rather go directly to app or home screen. I disable most notifications anyway. I just check stuff when I want to. :p

I think you make some really valid points, but we can’t just pick on touch ID for “wet/damp” fingers. I could make the counter argument that Face ID has its own pitfalls in terms of not successfully unlocking when the user is ‘lying down’ or their face may be relaxed, which poses a problem in terms of unlocking the phone. When you factor both forms of biometric security, they’re excellent, and they both have proven reliable, touch ID refined nicely all the way through the iPhone 8, but face ID is obviously the future for Apple, and is more secure, but doesn’t come without its shortfalls either.

We have to remain ‘objective’ in terms of realizing that they’re both totally different types of biometric security options, but neither one of them is perfect to the point where we can’t point out the Pros/cons of both.
