It's just a pity the Optus network is absolute rubbish. ..

Heard that Optus has a patchy network but it depends where you live I guess: Had no problems on Optus (in the early 2000s) in Armidale nor when visiting Sydney. Last time in Oz I tried '3' which was on a cheap prepay deal and gave no reception probs (Sydney, Canberra, Cowra, Katoomba, etc.).

Finland had 10 or 25 phones in each salepoint, some 24 stores all together.
All phones at the moment are being sold with forced 1 or 2 year contract.
So not a grand launch here either...

Well here in Belgium it's a typical disorganised mess! None of the resellers appear to have stock. Most Mobishite stores aren't opening until 10:00 and there's no indication of stock...

Ah, the guy came out nd said there were 6 iPhone - for a queue of about 20...

(I'm 17th...)

With Marion, Courtney, Alvin and Matt in the background (plus long-haired, Telstra-hatted bogan on the right).

lol. I was wondering who that guy on the right was. Now I know!

I did see big Matt Preston lurking in the background

I think I overheard him say…

'What I really like about this device is the gorgeous Retina Display, and that HD video camera is simply to die for. BUT…'

*Bridges antenna gap with finger. Pauses for dramatic effect*

'Has Apple done enough to stay in the competition?'

You sure? the 3GS's were all sold locked with horrendous unlocking fees.

Source? Nothing on Apple's site. 32GB used to be $1,040 for the 3GS.

No, the 3GS was sold outright unlocked from Apple for $879 and $1040.

I've heard the same $859 and $999 but haven't heard hide nor hair about pricing from ANYONE who went into Apple today and I was hoping for a confirmation.

Ended up ordering on the optus $59 cap so I guess I'll get mine sometime when the backlog starts clearing in 7 to 8 months ;)

Chundles - I don't get the difference between an unlocked iPhone and and unlocked and bought outright iPhone... is $999 the the price all up after all the monthly installments on a particular carrier or something?

In Australia and most other countries the iPhone is sold outright, unlocked from Apple. Here we have five networks that support the iPhone (we have no CDMA here) and they do offer the phone subsidised on certain plans.

If you buy the iPhone outright, unlocked from Apple you can use it on any carrier you choose on any plan (pre- or post-paid) you like. You can also use it overseas with a SIM purchased in that country.

So, you buy the iPhone for A$999 then you can choose your carrier, your payment method etc.

So how did Vodafone lose the iPhone 4 deal??? Can this please happen to AT$T???

It doesn't matter who it is launched with, in the case of New Zealand, you can always take it to another carrier. The ComCom in New Zealand and Australian equivalent pretty much mirror each others decisions when it comes to ending the practice of phone lock in. In the case of New Zealand both Vodafone and Telecom no longer lock their respective phones to their network so at the end of the contract you can take your phone with you or sign up for another contract and get upgraded.

What ever the case although the iPhone 4 is a notable upgrade I think the more interesting release will be in the future with the eventual move by carriers to LTE. EVDO is currently the standard so by the time LTE makes it debut you might see Apple loosen its grip when it comes to carriers - may even start selling direct to customers and unlocked in the case of many countries they service.

I had no idea there were so many Kiwis on MR!
We almost outnumbered the Aussies on this thread :)

Anyways in this photo you can see the crowd braving the roadworks outside Vodafone Manners Mall in Wellington at lunchtime. Quite a good crowd for such a small shop!
Everyone was typically nice and friendly. No mobs with pitchforks as reported in the media.

Where's The iPhone?

Apple store US says 3 weeks shipping time. ATT online says 7-10 days. So Apple can't supply the US but they're selling in an additional 17 countries today. Now it looks like the additional 17 or so countries are getting the same treatment we are.

Ya just gotta love Apple. Give em cake but make em wait. :p

outside of US, UK not many people can afford it anyway, what is this buzz all about?

it is selling like A$1000 or something ...

if it all afford, cannot update the iPhone every year, they still got to complete the two year contract started with iPhone 3GS.

WTF? Of course there are people outside the US and UK that can afford it... Look at the lineups for proof?

Are you talking about the US or NZ? EVDO is the "old" 3G standard, is not supported by any iPhone, and is going away in November.

If your post was talking about the US (it's not clear to me), then you can disregard this message :)

I lined up at the yes optus store on Murray street, West Perth. I got one of the three iphones they had for sale.

I'm pretty sure with optus you can get your iphone unlocked for no cost when you are on a contract. (why would they care its unlocked if you have to pay them the monthly fee anyway?)

People were lining up at the apple store from about 8pm the previous night  By the morning the line was huge and just grew throughout the day. By 4pm it was still several hundred long i think. Not sure how many phones the store got.
