If you have any questions about both the re-released 2020-005 Security update and the new 10.14.6 Supplemental Update, I have answers for you!

This is my follow-up article. I tried to test every install scenario that I could think of. Let me know if I've missed one.

Thanks again mrmacintosh! I followed the link you posted to download directly from Apple servers instead of updating only from System Prefs , downloaded compared the two : the first was only 68Mb while the other one from the server is 1.26Gb. I usually like the combos for many reasons. Launched the update but this is what I got Screen Shot 2020-10-02 at 9.54.51 AM.jpg

Then I went for the smaller one and it installed well. I wonder if the bigger one didn't work because I already had safari 14? Opening the package with Pacifist I found so more stuff, like Messages and a lot more as you can see.

Not sure if it's worth raising an eyebrow, but neither Security Update 2020-005 or macOS 10.14.6 Supplemental Update appear on Apple's Support Downloads page.

Guess I can officially start recommending the update since RAM usage remains steady and I haven't had any showstopping bugs with the update.

About the only thing out of band I can notice is a tendency to see somewhat more activity with my SSD in terms of voltage, but I'm sure its just the system doing what it has to for refreshing itself, and the bounds aren't any larger than they were before (0.2A when idle, up to 0.4 / 0.5 for brief periods.)

The version in system prefs is what your machine needs based on what it sees installed.
Going the other route is asking for trouble again.
I had Safari 14 installed and updated with the supupdate, used ram is more than halved (~3.75gb)...wow.

Holy smokes! The link everyone is passing around for the supplemental update is the OLD ONE from 9/26/19!!!

That's why it will not install, great catch on that. So far the update is ONLY available in software update and not on the downloads page as of yet.

That what software update is for........ 🤪 so you don’t have to manually keep track of stuff.

That is true till a point : it has proven to be statistically safer to update with the Combo rather than the small update. What this means is that, say, 99 out of 100 updates you will not have an issue with the single updates, but the grief from that single time it fails will more than overcome any savings in time and effort. Plus, when you're trying to recover from a failed update, the first recommendation is to reapply the COMBO update anyway.

Of course if the combo update is old and not the right one than ..it doesn't apply!😜

I've "stayed back" so far, haven't installed the latest updates.

Question:
Does the "2020-005-10.14.6" have to be installed PRIOR TO installing "Safari14.0MojaveAuto-10.14.6" ??

Just updated my iMac and my wife's Mac mini. No problem with my iMac, which didn't have a problem anyway. The problem with the Mac mini was that, following the old update, it kept waking from sleep and unfortunately that problem is still there, so the update hasn't fixed it.

Any ideas anybody?

No, I updated just Safari 14, then after few days Supplemental Update: so far everything works just fine
Still waiting for the 2020-005 because I need to do some fixing after it

No. I downloaded and installed Safari 14 without the 2020-005 security update, but everything is good now and you will be good with the latest Apple updates including the 005 security updatehttps://mrmacintosh.com/mojave-2020-005-security-update-causing-major-problems-updated/

The fixing I need to do are related to killing the Catalina update pestering, 005 should be ok🙂

The default install order for software update is to install Safari14.0 Supplemental update first then 2020-005.

No replies yet to my post 260. Looks like I'll have to reinstall Mojave. what's the best way of doing that?

Check Activity Monitor. Is there a process running that might be causing it to wake up? Do you have things that start up automatically when you reboot?

Not sure if it HAS TO, but that's the order in which these were released and the order of how most users probably installed them. Security Update 2020-005 was released about a week after Safari 14, and the supplemental fix/update about a week after 2020-005.

From what I read, the suplemental update was for anyone who had installed saf14 or su005 (not necessarily both) to fix the problem with the duff updates. Anything you havn’t installed will be a fixed version which should work as normal.

Safe to install safari 14 now on Mojave?

It depends on the order of the instalation. As long as you install Safari 14 or the supplemental update(just an updated Safari 14) AFTER the SU 2020-005 you are safe.
This is going to sound trivial, but how do I know if I already installed the Security update?

Do I install the updates in the attachment last?
