If there was a specific order, Apple wouldn’t show both updates together, where you can say install all.

I agree with this.

I was able to fix the problem by manually deleting safari 14.

Apples fix is a newer version of Safari 14.

so if you just let the updates rip I think the bad Safari will be overwritten with the fixed Safari files.

It is possible that Apple will install both updates in the proper order, but it can be a gamble.

P.S. In this particular case there is an order. The best I can say is that both updates seem to overwrite the same files. So in essence SU 2020-005 overwrites the same files, making previously installed Supplemental useless. You can of course fix it by installing Supplemental yet again but you need to have it handy and I am guessing an average user would not have it handy.
FYI I had Safari 14.0 installed.
Installed the supplemental update (less ram being used.... :) )
Just installed the 2020-005 update (last), still low ram, no compressed or swap used......;)

Thanks, you just confirmed my statement that an update order is only applicable for the older version of SU 2020-005.

P.S. After Apple updated SU 2020-005, Supplemental update became completely meaningless and provides only the "placebo effect".

This is wrong. The Supplemental update contains a newer build of Safari 14 than was available in the standalone Safari 14 installer.

Did this update break the app store?
I can not do any updates to my apps all of a sudden.
Have not tried to install new ones.

I appear to have the same issue on my work 5,1 Mac Pro. Signing out/in to my Apple ID does not help.

I have yet to try this on my home systems.

Thanks to everyone for the advice here. I have been absent for a while, fixing the problem and living. Here's a summary of the log I kept, in case it is useful to anyone else.
  1. After macOS Mojave Security Update 2020-005 my iMac 21.5 inch, Late 2013 8GB ran glacially slowly.
  2. I tried the following:
  3. Start Cmd+R, restore the operating system. It entered an infinite loop of estimating time remaining, about N minutes remaining. Force power off.
  4. Start normally, same infinite loop.
  5. Force power off.
  6. Reset SMC, reset NVRAM, but no second chime.
  7. Start Cmd+R, Disk Utility, iMac3 Disk (APFS), First Aid, result (extract):
Checking the extent ref tree.
error: Cross Check: ExtentRef physical extent (0x3275197 + 3) has kind APFS_KIND_UPDATE but was not referenced previously
Checking the fsroot tree.
error: Cross Check: FSroot tree references extent (0x3275197 + 3) which is not present in the ExtentRef tree.
error: Cross Check: Mismatch between extentref entry count (0) and calculated fsroot entry reference count (2) for extent (0x3275197 + 3)
  1. Start from a macOS Mojave boot USB stick, restore the operating system: same infinite loop.
  2. Cycle down to the Apple shop here in Düsseldorf to buy a Thunderbolt 2 cable. (I have a growing collection of legacy Apple cables.)
  3. Use MacBook Pro + Thunderbolt 2 cable + iMac in target disk mode to copy user files and migrate accounts.
  4. Start from a macOS Mojave boot USB stick, Disk Utility, erase/format iMac3 Disk, format APFS, restore OS from Time Machine (pre-SU2020-005).
  5. Disk Utility, iMac3 Disk (APFS), First Aid, result = PASS (with 3 new records):
Checking snapshot 1 of 3.
Checking snapshot 2 of 3.
Checking snapshot 3 of 3.
  1. Start from a macOS Mojave boot USB stick, restore the operating system (to regress to 29 Sep 2019 version 18G103).
  2. Install Security Update 2020-003.
  3. Copy a few user files missing from the Time Machine backup found on the target mode copy.
  4. Everything works. Phew!

DIAGNOSIS AND LESSONS

Before SU2020-005 Time Machine backups were very slow. This was partly but not entirely photoanalysisd.
Could there have been some disk corruption which was slowing down Time Machine? I saw other reports about snapshot problems.
After a security update TM has a lot of files to back up. Was it the cause of the slowness?
I will wait for SU2020-006.
Before installing an OS update I will run Disk Utility First Aid from USB or Cmd+R.
Before installing an OS update I will make sure all the Time Machine backups are up to date.
Thank goodness I have the PowerBook Pro without SU2020-004/5. I will continue to apply updates out of step.

Safari 14 won't launch. Drive is going ape-sht. There were 3 updates I just did (12:40 AM Pacific, Oct. 8); Safari, Security, and some system update. I'm on Mojave and have had my Mac Mini "gifted" with the shut down crash report every time I reboot. And now THIS.

I'm getting fed up with Apple throwing crap into my computer.

I was just about to update to safari 14 and security update, I guess I wont be doing that. Im sorry to hear about your trouble, hope it gets worked out.

Have you installed the supplemental update?

Do folks feel these latest reports of issues with the new security update are uncommon ?

Absolutely not.....this is happening more and more on MacOS and iOS.
I remember the days when I could install an update without even thinking twice (because it was a mac 😬)

I can only speak as I find but I have had a Mac for 20 years and this is the first serious problem that I have encountered.

(maybe once or twice when Apple removed OpenGL support from Mojave)
Heads up, Apple did not remove OpenGL support from Mojave! It is in fact still in Big Sur.

OpenGL was deprecated in Mojave which means Apple may remove it in a future version.

Likewise.......but I hear a LOT of issues mentioned, while I wait a while before updating.. ;)

I haven't updated since 2020-04...still going to wait. Is there that much of a difference in Safari 14 vs 13? If not, im just going to stay where I am and turn off all auto updates till maybe 2020-06 comes out.

Fair enough....but the latest supplemental fixes everything. Update: you'll be a bit safer, and there are no reported problems (finally!).

I was told by another user that the issue still exists, safari works right? No crashing, kernel issues? I want to update but don't want to risk making my mac a dud.

I stand corrected. What I meant though is that earlier Mojave was still very similar to High Sierra and their frameworks were pretty much interchangeable.
Catalina and Big Sur not so much, as far as I know the guys still haven't cracked Big Sur acceleration on vintage Macs.

I'm probably in the same boat as you. Safari 13 has had its rough patches, but been better lately. 2020-04 has been stable for us. I'd rather hold tight while Apple get their act together. Soon they'll get used to their new working conditions and the smoke will clear, fingers crossed.

Heads up: The new Safari beta 14.0.1 seed 2 was released yesterday. I installed it & have not experienced any problems so far. I am running 2020-005 with the supplemental.
Version 14.0.1 (14610.2.11)

Do you run Time Machine backups? Even if there were still problems, you can roll back very quickly using a snapshot. The restore takes literally less than a minute.

None of the fixes are showing up among my available updates. I have Safari 14.0.1 beta installed.
Try manually downloading and installing safari 14.0.1 beta 2 (which showed up on developer.apple.com a day or so ago). The supplemental update appears to be a repackaging of Safari 14. Since 14.0.1 beta 1 has a higher version number, the supplemental update refuses to install over beta 1.
