Yes, make sure that you install the supplemental update last, do them one at a time. If you do that you'll be happy with the result.
Thanks for the help, will install the security one first.

If there was a specific order, Apple wouldn’t show both updates together, where you can say install all.

It is possible that Apple will install both updates in the proper order, but it can be a gamble.

P.S. In this particular case there is an order. The best I can say is that both updates seem to overwrite the same files. So in essence SU 2020-005 overwrites the same files, making previously installed Supplemental useless. You can of course fix it by installing Supplemental yet again but you need to have it handy and I am guessing an average user would not have it handy.

I will probably wait for next SU then..... ;)
Safari 14 works well.

Apple need to get their act together, there seems to be problems with every update on every platform these days.........👎

Yes, I like Safari 14 as well.

BTW, it seems that Apple trying "to manage the installation order" by not releasing Supplemental update on their support/downloads site to ensure that the users will install it through Software Update after the SU 2020-005. Users who never installed SU 2020-005 in the first place have to manage the order themselves.

In my ceaseless search to solve the problem of my wife's Mac mini, I tried gregg2's suggestion and looked at activity monitor. Firefox seemed busy, so we shut it down and put the Mini to sleep - which promptly woke up 5 minutes later. Then we closed all applications and sent it to sleep. Same thing. So now I am left with reinstalling Mojave. I have a boot installer for Mojave on a USB pen drive that I used successfully when I downgraded from Catalina. I duly plugged it in and did a restart into boot, but the drive didn't show. Why would that be?

It does sound as though that system is a little strange. However, your post is not clear, did you mean you tried booting up while holding down the Option key, and the drive didn't appear? BTW, that method will often fail if you have a wireless keyboard, so try a wired keyboard or try to specify the USB as the Boot drive in the Start up Drive pane in the System Preferences. If that doesn't work, try booting into the partition by holding down the Command + r keys (again you may need a wired keyboard for that) or press the Option/Alt + Command + R keys when you boot up to enter Internet Recovery Mode. This boot up mode can take a very long time, be patient! Then run the Install macOS from the menu.
After your new system is installed, you can make sure you get the Security Update 005 first by using the following terminal commands in order, one by one.
sudo softwareupdate --install "Security Update 2020-005-10.14.6"
restart immediately, then run
sudo softwareupdate --install "Safari14.0MojaveAuto-10.14.6"

The problem is fixed and installing both simultaneously will now work as expected. It's not necessary to install them separately.

Thanks for your post, davidlv. Yes, that was it. The drive did not appear, but my HD along with the internet version of Mojave. I forgot to connect a wired keyboard but in fact it connected to my wifi OK. So I could download and install Mojave from the apple store (I checked, and it's a year old so wouldn't have the updates). If I boot from systems preferences start-up pane, that will run Mojave from the USB pen drive but won't install it. It would prove that it was OK however, so I'll try that.

But, in the event, it may not be necessary because the problem seems to have disappeared. All we did yesterday was try closing all apps and at the time it didn't work. However, we shut down last night and, on opening the Mini this morning, all seems to be well. I wonder if the update didn't quite load properly and now it has repaired itself. Is that possible?

Thanks. Does this mean that Apple updated SU 2020-05 when they pulled it down from the website(before putting it up again)? So I could have re-downloaded the new version and installed it on top of my already installed Supplemental update?

I guess it is important to point out that all my experience above relates only to the very first version of the SU 2020-005. I had no idea that there is an improved version available.

Yes, the security update that's available now is not identical to the one before.

I tend to wait till I've read the forums before installing Apple updates these days. Thanks to this thread I didn't install the defective 2020-005 or Safari 14 updates. I'm on 18G6020 and want to stick with Safari 13 for the time being. Does that mean I should avoid the new Mojave security update 2020-005 ? I've heard it includes Safari 14 but softwareupdate shows me the following:

* Security Update 2020-005-10.14.6
Security Update 2020-005 (10.14.6), 1633218K [recommended] [restart]

* Safari14.0MojaveAuto-10.14.6
macOS Supplemental Update (10.14.6), 67310K [recommended] [restart]

The security update does not include Safari 14; it's in the supplemental update.

They are all fixed up now, you can let software update install them

That was my initial thought, but wasn’t positive.
So I can install SU005 if I already have Saf14 and suplemental update installed?
The download version on Apple page still shows as 24 sept which is why I ask.

Just a few days...I'm pretty sure Apple will update on their download page on their site vs using your update via Mojave. Im staying where I am for right now at Safari 13 and 04 update for another week to see if it really is fixed. I even had to a clean install from a USB drive that already had the 04 update included. So far solved the long bootup time and seams to run ok. Now having trouble to connect to internet right away. But gonna see if my rig still has the sysctl.conf still installed and if so either rename it or delete it.

And yet...over in this thread, it says the order should be REVERSED. Which is correct?

So, we're trusting Apple again with this?

I had Supplemental update saved so it was an easy fix for me personally. All I had to do is to run Supplemental update again and I could not be more happier with Mojave performance on all my machines(officially supported or unsupported). I never had to re-download the updated version of the SU 2020-005. The update order is only applicable with the very first iteration of the SU 2020-005.

OK...so, I had installed the Safari 14.0 update when it popped up in late September. But, I never did the original Security Update 2020-005 that wreaked all the havoc and ultimately got pulled.

So what do I do? Run the Software Update as it appears today (Security Update, then Supplemental Update)?

Correct, just install them all as usual without much thinking. You played your cards right just by waiting a bit and letting Apple fix the issues with the 2020-005 update. I was just too quick to install the very first version as it came out.

So now, if no one is willing to be in the "first wave" of users to try an update, we'll never know when it's safe to download!

I will continue to update on the day of release (or as close to it as possible). Yes, SU 2020-005 had a major side effect, but I am pleased Apple resolved this as quickly as they did. I had a week or so of extremely high memory usage, but in the end everything worked out. Granted, I was lucky enough to have the memory headroom to handle this on my Macs, so I didn't need to re-install Mojave.

APFS local snapshot feature allows to return your system to a state before the update in a matter of 2-3 min. So Apple did gave us instruments to have more control over our systems and future.

I have to admit though, I hardly ever had a need to use it even on unsupported Mac(maybe once or twice when Apple removed OpenGL support from Mojave), so I became complacent and relaxed about installing updates.
