Owned SBSS for 7 months. Bumped it against many things many times. Not a scratch even when examined with iPhone flashlight. Superbly resistant to scratches i would say.

I have had the same great wear but I still, would like confirmation that the DLC coating is on the AW2.

I have one on order and if it is just anodized, I will go to the regular stainless AW2

Serie 3 here I come! :D

(Will order NIKE for this generation)

Black milanese and link bands also have the same price as the silver version now. Either Apple has stopped DLC-coating everything or they just adjusted the prices as the DLC coating was not expensive enough to justify the price increase.

is DLC just the process that keeps the color on the band? I would be rather upset if I wait to pay this much for a band for gen two just to find out that it won't hold up the same as the ones available last week...

Does this concern the SS model?

It concerns the Space Black Stainless
[doublepost=1473696334][/doublepost]I cancelled my 42mm Space Black Stainless until this is resolved.

I am in no hurry and having 2nd thoughts, have two AW1 units in the drawer.

Will check out thew new OS before I order again, might be happy with just that.

Didn't you return your SBSS AW1? Thought you had some issues and ended up just returning it?

I returned the first and bought a 42 SS with the leather loop. I waited so long for that DLC band and watch. Several months ago I bought the SB 42mm and put the leather loop on it. I can only use the watch for a few days and back to my FitBit. Just got the new Charge 2 and it is really nice. It now has interchangeable bands:), not near as nice as Apple but it is sad for Apple that I like their $149 Charge 2 better than the AW.

If it is confirmed they are still using the DLC coating I might try the AW2 but now will see what new software it offers, the AW2 only offers GPS which for me does not do anything as I always carry my iPhone, even when running.

Thank you all very much for the information! I'm just an absolute noob not being into watch materials at all. I ordered the normal clear silver stainless steel Apple Watch Series 2. Does that mean I haven't been affected by this issue?

Any one that has the SS Space Black Apple Watch how's the wear and tear does it scratch up like the normal SS Apple Watch ?

I would appreciate the feedback because I'm thinking of getting my first Apple Watch.

Thanks

I ordered my SS SB 42mm on the launch day, since then, I wear it every day, normal use, never take extra care, occasionally bump into something, and my watch still looks exactly the same as when it was new.

On the other hand, my wife's 38mm SS + leather band shows it's age by now, especially the band.

Tonight I chatted with Apple Support about the Space Black watch in my attempt to determine the fate of the DLC coating.

Answer: She and no one else working at the time seems to know. Was advised to reach out to the "Subject Experts" during normal working hours; they might be able to help me.

Chat is below.

Apple:
Welcome to Apple.
What can we do for you today?

me:
Does the Series 2 Space Black Apple Watch have the DLC coating on it?

Apple:
Please wait while I connect you with an Apple Specialist.

Dorothy:
Hello. My name is Dorothy, and I will be your Apple specialist today.

Dorothy:
You’ve come to the right place. I would be more than happy to assist you with that inquiry. Can I start off by having your name?

Me:
Does the Series 2 Space Black Apple Watch have the DLC coating on it?

Me:
xxxxxxx

Dorothy:
Nice to meet you, xxxxx.

Dorothy:
Let me look into that for you.

Me:
I have DLC watch now, not a mark on it. A painted finish would make me worried and probably just stay with what I have.

Me:
A scratch on space black is pretty obvious.

Dorothy:
I gotcha. No worries. Still checking this out. Thanks again for your patience. Allow me two to three more minutes.

Dorothy:
Take a look at this with me.

Dorothy:
The Apple Watch does not have diamond-like carbon coating.

Me:
I don't see space black mentioned at all.

Me:
How is the black color applied? Does anyone know or is Apple not willing to say?

Dorothy:
Let me look into that for you.

Dorothy:
Bear with me.

Me:
ok

Dorothy:
Thanks!

Dorothy:
Ok. It was listed on that link. Apple Watch Series 2 (Stainless steel) has a 316L stainless steel case, sapphire crystal, and ceramic back.

Me:
That's the silver stainless steel.

Me:
There is also a Space Black color stainless steel watch.

Me:
It's made black somehow.

Dorothy:
This model, right here is what you are referring to, right?

Me:
That's the one.

Dorothy:
If so, regardless of the stainless steel color, the specs of the material would still apply.

Dorothy:
So, it is a 316L stainless steel case.

Me:
I understand that. What I want to know is how he black color is achieved.

Dorothy:
I see. Ok. Bear with me.

Me:
The DLC is very hard and black. No chips or scratches have happened that would show the silver stainless steel color underneath.

Me:
That's my concern. If the black coating is painted, then the risk of chipping or scratching would seem to be higher.

Dorothy:
Still checking.

Me:
Didn't mean to give you a workout. :)

Dorothy:
No worries. You’re too funny.

Dorothy:
Still checking it out.

Dorothy:
So, I looked, and looked. And, I even had colleagues look as well. But, I could not find the details anywhere. And, I do not want to give you any false information. But, we do have a specialized department, that is currently closed. They’re called our subject experts. And, if you chat us or call use tomorrow, they may be able to assist you further with that inquiry. Would that be ok with you?

Me:
I'll give that a try. Can't believe it's this hard to find out what's going on.

Me:
Thanks, though.

Dorothy:
I know! Sorry about that. It’s been a pleasure assisting you. I hope I have provided you with awesome service today, and that I was able to successfully assist you with all your needs. While I’m here, is there anything else I can do to make this experience better?

Me:
No, that's all. Thanks.

Dorothy:
No problem at all! Thank you for taking the time to visit the Apple Online Store. For your security, you may now close this chat window. We appreciate your business! Please feel free to chat with us again, if you need any further assistance.

This isn't true. At least in the US store. SS milanese is $149 while SB is $199 and SS link bracelet is $449 while SB is $549

I was told by an associate at Apple that DLC was removed from the language because of issues with discoloration related to the space black link bracelet.

Not sure why they removed the DLC terminology instead of trying to fix what ever issue caused the discoloration.

So you are saying it is still there just not talked about?

I watched this unboxing of the Space Black series 2 from some Brazilian guy...it really does not look as dark as the DLC version first version. Something is up. Does anyone agree the colour/finish looks different?

I also cannot find any information on this, and I received my black SS watch today. I will be so disappointed if it no longer has the DLC coating.
