Was worried about this but got the Space Black SS today and compared it to my Series 1 and it looks identical. Think it may be just that the marketing materials don't highlight it anymore.
I asked at my local Apple store and was told that the DLC coating indeed is on the SB SS Apple watch S2.
There isn't any other coating that can be applied to stainless steel short of painting it *
Apple has a habit of not mentioning other technology.
*that offer the same gloss finish
Looking at it I would have said they have done 2 things, they have refined the process and reduced the coating thickness.I have the space black 2 and I had the original space black AW. On the 2 it looks shinier to me and it looks a little different. If it's not DLC coated I'm returning it.

I watched this unboxing of the Space Black series 2 from some Brazilian guy...it really does not look as dark as the DLC version first version. Something is up. Does anyone agree the colour/finish looks different?
No way is that Space Black. It looks lighter in color than the Space Gray Aluminum.
I'm gonna need to go to the Apple Store to look at it, assuming they have them on display. I can do a direct comparison with the one on my wrist.
If it's really Space "Gray" instead of Space Black, then I'll have to think long and hard about upgrading. Or maybe go flashy and get regular Stainless Steel.
Question for anyone in this thread:
Is it true the Space Black Milanese Loop with DLC can scratch the sapphire lens and read sensor glass? I am very concerned as I am clumsy. I want the DLC coating on the watch itself, but if the loop truly can scratch the watch, I will opt for something else.
Thank you,
Sean
I am very sorry you dealt with that. Thank you for the information.Yes, it's true. I picked one up a couple of days ago on offer (1st-gen) and I was absolutely shocked to find that the loop scratched the ceramic back really badly from just putting the watch down on a table.
I was even more astonished to find that it scratched the sapphire front as well, just from brushing it under its own weight while I was taking off the watch!
I'm returning it.

I have a series 2 Space Black and it is definately a GLoss Black DLC type coating. It does not look like a Space Grey Aluminiun series 2 watch when compared side by side....![]()
That's good news. I'm feeling more hopeful.
I only wish it wasn't so dang difficult to get information out of Apple about the DLC coating for this watch.
I want the glossy look, but I'm also worried about scratches and dings. My S0 Space Black doesn't have a single mark on it. My concern is they did something similar to what they did with the Jet Black iPhone, and Apple says this phone is more easily subject to fine scratches/abrasions. Don't want that for the watch.

It is not possible to use the same method for both. One is aluminium, the other is stainless steel.I want the glossy look, but I'm also worried about scratches and dings. I think it is just the lighting in the video. Sometimes my SS in some light looks like the space black SS.I watched this unboxing of the Space Black series 2 from some Brazilian guy...it really does not look as dark as the DLC version first version.
