Was worried about this but got the Space Black SS today and compared it to my Series 1 and it looks identical. Think it may be just that the marketing materials don't highlight it anymore.

I asked at my local Apple store and was told that the DLC coating indeed is on the SB SS Apple watch S2.

Hi, I was told the opposite at the Apple Store in Covent Garden. I asked if it was the same coating as the previous SS SB and he said he doesn't believe it is, but he was unable to tell me what the coating was.

I guess all we have to do is wait for any scratch test videos to pop up.

I'm surprised the media isn't talking about this. I'm regretting not getting the Series 0 with DLC coating now. That looked bad ass, but I told myself I would wait for the next generation.

There isn't any other coating that can be applied to stainless steel short of painting it *

Apple has a habit of not mentioning other technology.

*that offer the same gloss finish

Well I just picked one up today and it looks and feels identical to the DLC series 0. I doubt they changed the process. We will find out though!

I have the space black 2 and I had the original space black AW. On the 2 it looks shinier to me and it looks a little different. If it's not DLC coated I'm returning it.

Looking at it I would have said they have done 2 things, they have refined the process and reduced the coating thickness.

I don't think you can compare fresh out of the box to a year-old in terms of DLC coating/shininess. It could be duller because of wear and tear over time, as is the case with oleophobic coating.

I watched this unboxing of the Space Black series 2 from some Brazilian guy...it really does not look as dark as the DLC version first version. Something is up. Does anyone agree the colour/finish looks different?

No way is that Space Black. It looks lighter in color than the Space Gray Aluminum.

I'm gonna need to go to the Apple Store to look at it, assuming they have them on display. I can do a direct comparison with the one on my wrist.

If it's really Space "Gray" instead of Space Black, then I'll have to think long and hard about upgrading. Or maybe go flashy and get regular Stainless Steel.

I have a series 2 Space Black and it is definately a GLoss Black DLC type coating. It does not look like a Space Grey Aluminiun series 2 watch when compared side by side.... :)

I purchased the 38 SS w/ Milanese last preorder; this time I went series 2 SS SB 42 w/sport.

It's black and shiny to me...

...tried Apple support chat and they couldn't tell me if it was or was not. They said only product development would know.

Either way it is gorgeous and blends into the deep black screen, looking like one choseive unit (instead of screen + body). I did a hunt pre release for the discontinued 42 green sport band and found 1 at Best Buy.

Well I can't tell the difference between my series 2 SSSB and my original SSSB. I wouldn't imagine they would change this.

Question for anyone in this thread:

Is it true the Space Black Milanese Loop with DLC can scratch the sapphire lens and read sensor glass? I am very concerned as I am clumsy. I want the DLC coating on the watch itself, but if the loop truly can scratch the watch, I will opt for something else.

Thank you,
Sean

Yes, it's true. I picked one up a couple of days ago on offer (1st-gen) and I was absolutely shocked to find that the loop scratched the ceramic back really badly from just putting the watch down on a table.

I was even more astonished to find that it scratched the sapphire front as well, just from brushing it under its own weight while I was taking off the watch!

I'm returning it.

I am very sorry you dealt with that. Thank you for the information.

Thanks, I appreciate that.

I'm now having a hard time deciding whether to get a Series 2 (stainless steel with sport band) or a 7 Plus. I want to get one or the other, but can't justify both at once!

That's good news. I'm feeling more hopeful.

I only wish it wasn't so dang difficult to get information out of Apple about the DLC coating for this watch.

I want the glossy look, but I'm also worried about scratches and dings. My S0 Space Black doesn't have a single mark on it. My concern is they did something similar to what they did with the Jet Black iPhone, and Apple says this phone is more easily subject to fine scratches/abrasions. Don't want that for the watch.

I just can't believe they would make that change. Phones are mostly in cases, watches are not. they are near hands and hit things a lot!

See my above pic: Series 2 42 SSSB (delivered yesterday). Anyone that thinks that looks not as dark as the Space gray - aluminum - AW, they definitely need an optical test.

Like I said it's dark and blends seamlessly with the black face.

If you read the disclaimer more carefully, it actually doesn't say it's more easily subject to fine scratches but that it shows scratches more easily. This is really no different from black cars, which show scratches more easily despite having the exact same scratches as those on lighter color cars.

I suspect that the real reason for the disclaimer is we've now had several years of silver/gold/light Space Gray iPhones and so people are no longer used to scratches like back in the glossy black iPhone 3G and 4 series days. Apple also knows from experience how anal retentive some of their customers are.

It is not possible to use the same method for both. One is aluminium, the other is stainless steel.

I think it is just the lighting in the video. Sometimes my SS in some light looks like the space black SS.

Update on my black SS:

Came in on Friday and didn't put on until Saturday morning around 10:00 AM. By Saturday at 2:00 PM, there was a very small scratch right under the left part of the screen where the glass meets the SS. I can't think of anything that should have caused a scratch like that. All I had done so far that day was go to brunch.

I took it right back to the Apple store to return. I asked about the DLC coating as at this point I was very concerned about scratched. The rep I spoke with had no idea what I was talking about. Since she couldn't confirm or deny that the coating is still on the watch, I ordered a regular SS. Now, I'm back to my old Apple watch as I wait the 3-5 weeks for my new watch to arrive :(

I took a pic in the mall with my phone to try and show the scratch, but the pic isn't very good due to the lighting where i was.
