I'm wondering if someone could reach out to Apple, beyond their customer service to reconcile this concern with the DLC? Someone has to have an answer on this. I personally think it does use the DLC. But then again, perhaps it doesn't have the DLC.

For example, the rumor was the iPhone 7 was not using sapphire on the lens cover for the camera. Someone reached out to Phil Schiller and he clarified indeed the lens cover was in fact genuine sapphire, along with the home button.

We all need to tweet Phil and Tim until they give us an answer! I've started the process! lol

Guys, my emails to Tim and Phil paid off... got an email back from Stan Ng (stan at apple dot com) and this is what he said...

Hi Karim,

Thanks for reaching out to us about Apple Watch Series 2. The Space Black stainless steel models of Apple Watch Series 2 do have the same DLC coating as the first generation Apple Watch space black models. Let me know if you have any further questions. Thanks!

Awesome. Thank you for looking into this. @Newtons Apple also was wanting to know this. Much appreciated @abdulkar.im.

I have had my Black SS 42 S2 for nearly a week now and have worn it for 16.hours a day . I don't baby it like I do with my standard SS42 S2 and although I haven't dinged it or smacked it against anything hard yet, close inspection shows that it is mint with no micro scratches that can occur with everyday use. It's not as pretty as the standard SS and it's early days but it's nice to know that I can wear it and it still stay in mint condition

Yeah, not quite as pretty, but at least I won't be as worried about it either...

I have both the original DLC covered stainless and the new AW2 in Black stainless and they look a little different to me. I will try to take an image but doubt the image would show the slight difference.

It's confirmed @Newtons Apple. The Black stainless Series 2 has the DLC coating. Moving forward with my purchase. Thanks for your advice earlier.

I'm holding out until Friday, just to see if any offers about. I have one one order from Apple, but that's 2-3 weeks, so will cancel and reorder if required.

Same here. I am hoping for a discount on the Stainless models. I doubt they would discount the aluminum models. What I think they might do is a discount off a Watch with the purchase of MacBook for example. Interested to see what they have to offer.

I know somewhere in the UK that has what I want in stock for collection straight away and was so close to buying today.... lol

I have been waiting patiently for a Nike+ version with the black and gray band to become available at my local BB. I may just buy a Nike knock-off band and get the S2 Space Black with DLC, instead. I am not convinced it is worth the extra $200 for the Black SS model, but I may give it a try since I have $145 in BB rewards built up. Plus, they have one available right now.

I think what really separates the black stainless from the regular stainless is the DLC. Most have said the black stainless is almost impervious to scratches. I'm looking forward to ordering Mine.

Hey guys. This thread was a great read. I just bought the SS Space Black AW as well and have been reading stuffs and reached here.

I would like to expand this thread by sharing something weird I've heard from the Apple Store employee who helped me..

She said that AW SS original color (the silvery color) is also DLC coated.... I asked her twice and she said it with confidence. Has anyone else heard the same thing?

Not that it matters to me, but it was very interesting to note.. It may help others as well :)

If that's the truth, then Apple get the worst DLC on their normal SS watch. Those silver SS surface are very easy to scratch.

She probably had a little "smoke" on her lunch break. The normal SS does not have any coating what-so-ever, it's just polished.

That employee misinformed you and is incorrect. The regular Stainless is not protected by the Diamond Like Carbon coating. It's high polished 316 L steel.

Only the black stainless has the DLC coating.

I don't believe this at all. DLC is something applied for the dark colours. It is the colour. It isn't something applied just to make the Watch tougher after the colour is already applied. It just happens to be a tough type of coating to achieve that colour. There's no coating on the normal SS. It's bare metal. And no, I've never heard anyone claim this before

Either she is misinformed or you miss understood her.

The original BLACK stainless steel Watch has DLC just like the current BLACK statinless steel Watch. The original and current stainless steel watches do not have DLC

On that topic (the colour) - I was kinda hoping that Apple would have pursued that further. There's several materials that they may be able to use the PVD process in order to have near-diamond hardness (which would allow them to have different colours).
Glad we final got that answered though. Would have been nice if they would have updated their website to reflect that as well. (and Apple Support never did get back to me on their twitter account btw). Multiple prods....nadda.

I do find it odd that Apple would remove that specific feature from being advertised on the website. That's what separates the stainless model from the black stainless is the diamond like carbon coating. That's what makes the whole purchase necessary with the toughness with DLC on the black stainless. Aside from the sapphire screen.

I asked her repeatedly and she answered yes.. Not sure how one would misunderstand "does the other silver Stainless Steel have DLC coating"... Oh yeah. she even told me that you CAN polish the DLC coating XD...

It kinda excited me a bit.. But oh well. I wanted the coating and I got the Space Black. But they really need to train their employees more... I've been misinformed many times in Apple Store before.. Thank god I've learned a lot from you guys.

I agree with you. They've invested in doing that coating and yet not advertising the feature puzzles me. It's quite a significant feature of the watch and the owners SHOULD know about it since they cannot polish it regularly..

Only thing I can think of (why they removed it from the website) is that one of Apple's employees saw some of the pictures posted in the owner's thread here (some people that seemed almost purposefully finding surfaces with particulates approaching diamond hardness to grind their watches against) and really didn't want that sort of behaviour to continue. We all know how many irresponsible journalists there are out there - once you have a couple dozen cases of people gouging their watches, you'd have one or more of them making a story out of it.

(to those that don't know - if you're at a resort where the concrete walkways and walls have a "sparkly" look to them - keep your SBSS watch the hell away from it). Other concretes can as well, but if it's fancy looking, you can pretty much be guaranteed it does have those particulates in it.
