The raw materials cost is utterly insignificant, sure, but the time and effort sunk into finishing/polishing that watch case is undoubtedly going to be significant. The case is a very complex overall shape, with many nooks and crannies and various holes of different sizes and shapes and so on, and the ceramic material is quite hard (~8 mohs scale), making it difficult to process.

So apart from apple tax, there's a reason it is costly.
I am pretty sure the cost of producing the case is a lot less than $800. It's mass produced in China. It will be made for peanuts! Completed for us because we don't make them, but easy for those who do.

This discussion is tiring. Every year some site disassembles the newest iPhone and says something like "Oh, look: this iPhone costs just $xxx to produce but Apple is charging us $999". It's not just about the raw material costs. Sure, they can mass produce it in China but who is designing it in the first place? Who comes up with the idea, the software, the marketing? Who is responsible for setting up the production? ...

The exact same applies to the Watch.

Yep, R&D people, this is what the 'Apple Tax' covers. Plus it takes days to make and machine the ceramic anyway.

I understand all that. Everything is already in place to make these in China and the quote for a new case is $800. That is extortionate. The item is not made to order and once everything has been set up the price to manufacture the item would be peanuts (it is made in China). When the prices are so high, you get the impression it is more intentional so you purchase another one. Apple doesn't manufacture products in a way to be repaired easily, so sending the item for repair should be cheaper! $200-$300 seems reasonable.

I worked in a laptop repair centre before (Europe's largest) and customers had a fixed price for repair. It would be unreasonable for them to pay $600 for a laptop and quote $500 to replace the plastic case.

Ceramic is not that exotic and sure apple add a few more ingredients (which again would cost peanuts in China) but there is no justification for $800 for a case replacement! That's insane! This is not a small business but Apple who most likely already have made their money back on the Apple Watch.

Mine is due to arrive in 2 days. Originally it was a 7-10 day time frame but it is coming sooner than expected. I got the white ceramic. I currently have the SS, Series 1 and wanted the connectivity. I also didn't want to get SS again as it would not be much of a visual change. The ceramic was the perfect solution. I can't wait until it gets here!!

You’re going to love it!! I’ve worn mine everyday since December and I have noticed so many changes during my day, I’m making healthy choices just to close those rings!! Plus, it’s divinely gorgeous. Just gorgeous!!

Does anyone wear the grey ceramic with the apple link bracelet? I currently wear my watch with the black milanese loop and the charcoal grey leather loop and love both
thanks!

Decided to return my SS w/ Milanese Loop and keep my newly acquired Series 3 Edition White but hate the fact that it limits my band selection.
I purchased the Single Tour Fauve Barenia and love the look and feel on the SS but think it doesn’t look so hot with the Ceramic.. thoughts?

I have the same situation. I have that band in the double tour style and don't like it with the ceramic. I don't like any bands with it except the one it came with. Shame, shame, shame on Apple for not giving us more choices for this watch.

The leather feels stiffer and thicker than the other Hermès straps I’ve tried. I assume it will soften with time.
Epsom will likely not soften up. It is a structured leather .... when used on purses, it is very stiff, which some people like because it keeps its shape. It is the polar opposite of Barenia, for example.

Got my Hermès knock off and even though in my work lighting the hardware looks much darker, it’s not as bad in natural light as they’re glossy like the body...

I have worn my White S3 ever since last september and my rolex gathers dust in the drawer. I just love it and it works with so many different bands. Looking forward to the 4th gen watch in a few months time

The new pride band on the white ceramic :apple::)

That looks great on you!

They need more bands with white lugs like that to match the white ceramic!

My new white ceramic. I am really loving it! I still am looking for another band. Cannot find anything I like ....

The new sky blue sports band would go well with that colour on your watch face :D

I am disappointed in the lack of band choices for ceramic but I did find one that I like.... the Sport Loop - Seashell. I have a "thing" where if the lugs show, I like for them to match the material of the watch. Finally I found this one. It's on the Apple site. I wish there were more but am glad to have at least one extra band.
