FYI, just added the Watch to my old school Unlimited Plan at the local ATT Store. So it can be done, just $10 a month.
That said, I may switch to the new Unlimited Plus plan since it seems to be cheaper, especially if I bring the kids over from Cricket. $145 for two people on Unlimited Plus plan plus $20 for each kids' line.

Is there a catch? What is difference between the old school Unlimited Plan and the new Unlimited Plus?

Good news is for those that have the grandfathered plan, it can be added to it.

Congratulations on your perseverance. I changed my plan to the Unlimited Plus and was able to activate LTE without any problem directly from the Watch app. I've been wanting to use the hotspot feature for about five years now, so it seems worthwhile to me.

Enjoy your watch!

No real catch unless you also had a FAN / Signature Plan discount. Many of the discounts were 30% and higher. You would also get limited Tethering 10 GB per month on the new plan. This was not available on the Grandfathered plan.

You simply have to run the numbers to see which plan is best for you.

Dave

I’d double check your actual account and make sure. I got all the way To retention who asked a supervisor if there was a way to override it and they weren’t able to. I’m canceling and she apologized.

No, it is real and can be done by any rep that knows how to provision a specific type of line. Please don't be rude if the rep does not know how to help you. Just keep trying it really can be done even though it is outside of the normal Workflow.

This process will allow you to add a $10 Apple Watch LTE plan to a personal billing account that has the Grandfathered iPhone data plan or several other types of accounts. Note: You can't do this just by using the watch and your iPhone from home. It can be done over the phone or at an AT&T Corporate retail location. Here is the basic information that the rep needs.

1. EID of your watch
2. IMEI of your watch
3. Note there is no ICCID to provide since your Watch is using the eSIM.

You can get the above information from the watch box.

If you call, please use 800-331-0500. The rep needs to be able to manually provision a new line under your Billing Account using the EID and IMEI numbers, this combination should lead to the AT&T Unlimited Wearable plan for $10 a month. This is a single line and is not part of a Mobile Share Group. This charge should appear on your bill as Access for Wearable 4G LTE or something similar.

Once you get the email confirming the new phone number is activated, you can then use the following steps to complete everything from your iPhone.

Complete the set up of Cellular for you LTE Watch:

On your iPhone, open the Apple Watch app.
  1. Tap the My Watch tab, then tap Cellular.
  2. Tap Set Up Cellular. (Note: you may need to power cycle your watch to make this active)
  3. Follow the instructions to complete the NumberSync for Apple Watch (Cellular).

I called AT&T this morning and a very helpful lady is happy to sign me up for $10 a month in spite of our grandfathered plan. I get my new watch 3 at the Apple store and when I try to setup cellular the AT&T page on the iPhone says plan is $10 for only the first 3 months, then it’s $53. I don’t set it up and head to the AT&T store. There they confirm that “they can’t touch” a grandfathered plan, if I want Watch service I need to change plans. I tell the lady that it looks like a scam when you say something before the purchase and then the opposite afterwards. I will call back later and try what dave006 suggests above (thanks!).

Having said that, a current 6 gb plan (each) for 2 people is $75, plus $10 for the watch. That’s way less than my current grandfathered $140, with corporate discount, and no text. I can’t think of any reason to keep the old plan, we barely use 5 gigs between the 2 of us — any insights? I’m considering it, but I just don’t trust AT&T...

If a phone rep or a rep in a Corporate Retail location says they can't touch a Grandfathered data plan just say good you don't want them to and they don't have to make any changes to "My" iPhone Voice Plan or my iPhone Unlimited Data Plan.

"I am asking you to add the New $10 AT&T Unlimited Wearable plan to my billing account". Once you provide the IMEID from the Watch that should be the key to getting this wearable plan added. It is a normal "Device" it is a "Wearable" that has a $10 Standalone Unlimited Plan!

The thing that confuses most customers and reps is that this wearable plan has a unique phone number so it must be a new line of service that needs a separate data plan or a Mobile Share plan that would include your iPhone.

Dave

I’ll definitely try that, thanks!!

Yes, this is exactly what the rep did at the ATT store. She was super nice and said she did not think it would work for a grandfathered data plan but it did. Enjoying my Apple Watch 3 on LTE now. :)

That said, I did not realize the new Unlimited Data Plan was just $20 for additional lines after the first two line...so will be switching to the Unlimited Plus plan anyway. I did my research and it looks like most people agree it's very close to the grandfathered plan, finally! Nothing missing as far as I can tell.

They try to hid in the fine print. You don't get any FAN / Premium Service discounts on the new / current Unlimited Data Plans. Not a factor if you don't have this discount but for some customers it can be as high as a 50% discount.

It worked perfectly so far, Dave, thank you for your thorough instructions. However, I can only be sure when they fix this glitch between Apple and AT&T, cause my watch wasn’t able to get LTE.

I called the number you posted above, explained the details, was put on hold many times, but being nice and patient paid off. The rep got the EID and IMEI, asked about the ICCID to which I mentioned the eSIM, etc., and eventually she confirmed that I was on the wearable $10/month plan, cancelling the plan that they had incorrectly given us in the morning.

I called the activation phone number she provided and entered my watch phone number, all OK. I waited 5 minutes before turning on my watch again but was unable to setup the cellular service, a screen showed up saying “sorry, there’s a problem, call this number...” The rep at this number mentioned the glitch and said they’re trying to come up with a solution tomorrow. I’ll give an update if all goes well. I’m hopeful now, tho, thanks!!!

Does anyone know if I can add my LTE watch to my Unlimited talk & text plan? It was the plan that was offered very briefly before the current AT&T Unlimited Plus plan. when they brought back unlimited plans.I really do not want to change plans, since that plan allows my FAN discount and is cheaper than the current plan. The only difference is I do not get tethering, which I am totally fine with.

This is remarkable news and I'm quite impressed you were able to come up with a solution. I just want to clarify that you are referring to the grandfathered unlimited plan that was originally $30, but is now $40? Also, since your method creates a new line with its own phone number, how does that number get entered in the setup process because with the standard method method, the watch and the phone use the same number?

If this works, I'll return the non-LTE watch I just received and get a cellular version. I hope they become available in the stores before my exchange period ends. I passed on the cellular version initially because switching my account to the Unlimited Plus plan would have been $10 more, so with the charge for the watch, it would have been an extra $20/month total. I considered giving it a try and just canceling the cellular service on the watch if I didn't end up using it very much, but I would not have been able to go back to the old unlimited plan. This is what I objected to most. I was also upset that AT&T is making us pay for the first 3 months and then giving a credit rather than just making it free for the trial period like other carriers are doing. It's been frustrating to the point of forgoing the cellular option for now, but your method may be a solution.

Thanks for all your input on this thread! When the watch is added to a grandfathered unlimited plan using the method you describe, will the watch make and receive calls from the same number assigned to the phone?

The Watch is assigned it's own number. That number uses NumberSync and will then work with your iPhone number, once they set it up in their system. If someone calls that new Watch number, only it will ring. A secret phone number. :)
I had a very nice ATT rep who was also smart. We had some system delay issues but it did end up working, on the old grandfathered plan. I have a Family Talk plan with minutes and the unlimited grandfathered data plan. At first she did not think it was supported but she got it to work.

Update,
I chatted with Apple Support again today, got a call back from another Senior Advisor who confirmed that I had tried everything and we agreed that it seemed to be an issue on AT&T’s end. I asked if she had senior technical contacts at AT&T who could assist. She did, placed me in a call with AT&T technical support. AT&T indicated that there is an activation issue with some accounts from the iPhone Apple Watch apps and that they are trying to work with Apple to resolve with software update / patch. However, they can work around by manually adding the watches to the plan from their end. This required me verbally providing them the IMEI and EID for each watch for each phone number. They then called me back about 20 minutes later, had me reboot watch and go through the cellular activation attempt again from the Apple Watch App on iPhone and this time it went through to complete activation on iPhone Apple Watch app.

TL/DR version:
AT&T Technical support must add Apple Watch to plan and NumberSync manually (need Watch IMEI and EID and iPhone Phone#), reboot watch, Activate Cellular again from Apple Watch app on iPhone and verify cellular service on Apple Watch via Control Center on Watch.

If someone dials the original phone number associated with iPhone, will it ring on the watch? Even if the iPhone is off? Thanks!
Yes as long as the watch is connected to a know Wi-Fi network or cellular is enabled. Please don't consider this as the original phone number, once the watch and paired iPhone have NumberSync Apple Watch (GPS & LTE) enabled they both share the iPhone's phone number.

Yes you can add the $10 AT&T Unlimited Wearable plan to your existing plan. If it does not work by running the setup / activation process on your watch, you can call or stop by a Corporate Retail location as described earlier in the thread.

I have the same plan but I have to wait until Oct. 5th for my Nike+ LTE watch actually try the process myself.

The completely empty AT&T corporate store near me was able to add the $10 Unlimited Wireless plan to my account in less than 10 minutes. The rep knew the drill and didn't even try to sell me the mobile share plan. He did tell me upfront not to bother trying with NumberSync before Monday. I just logged onto MyAT&T and can see both my old plan and my Unlimited Wearable (with its own number).

Thanks for the update. Did the rep mention or indicate why you should not bother completing Cellular setup today vs Monday for NumberSync?

I don't know a reason that it would not work right now.

It later worked for me. My guess is that he was either repeating a standard line given from corporate or just making something up off the cuff after dealing with issues earlier.

THANK YOU, THANK YOU, THANK YOU.
I ep my new watc wrapped up until I got it all set up.
Went to my AT&T store this AM. At first they said can’t do it. Then I showed them your step by step and they had an aha moment and got it all done. My watch is now up and running.
To test I turned off my phone and called it from a landline.

I called that 800 number. The agent got the IMEI number and then put me on hold.... and I disconnected after 35 minutes of silence.

Is there a reason why I cannot do that myself via the website via Add Device? I entered the IMEI and it recognized it as an Apple Watch (but I didn't go through with it)

I tried that. Gave the lady my imei and she said she didn’t need the eid #. She gave me another phone number that’s supposed to be the watches but when I call it it says not in service. The watch says no sim and when I try the watch app it says not compatible with current plan.
