The T-connectors (and the connected adaptors & cables) on the older MBPs were absolute rubbish in our experience. I had one adaptor which just stopped charging, another where the cable insulation started burning/melting near the T-connector; and another where the cable between the adaptor and wall socket failed (I replaced it with a cheap "kettle lead" and haven't had a problem with that one since; this cable seems to be a common failure).
With the 3 other Macs in the office, 1 has had a failed adaptor, one has the frayed T-connector and another now has the same cheap, black cable between adaptor and wall-socket as mine. And yes, we plug and unplug them the same way you do. If you haven't had the same problem with those adaptors, you're just lucky; it's not any magic voodoo.
I suspect the design is part of the problem though. Apple - in their wisdom - don't put any serrated 'grips' on their plugs, making them less easy to pull out. It's easier to leverage a Magsafe T-connector up/down than it is to pull it directly out. Even if you're only touching the connector and not the cable, leveraging the cable up/down like this could result in the bending of the cable (which Apple should have foreseen).
With the new L connector, leveraging the connector up/down simply twists the cable very slightly, so there isn't the same stress. I've certainly had no problems with any MBP with an L connector here.
