I never heard about any of this. I have one of the very first T-style connectors on my 2006 MB Pro which I'm still using and looking at right now. It has done a lot of traveling too. If someone buys a new car and crashes it into a concrete wall, do they get a new car now? Geez!

I have a T-style connector for my 2007 MBP which has gone everywhere (weekly trips for work) and worked great for years and years. I'm using it again, now with my early '11 MBP, because after just a few months of similar use, that one's L connector frayed and shorted and is dead. I'm going to have it replaced under the warranty, but just haven't had a chance yet.

this cable thing is a joke

I came in with a frayed cable a year after i bought my original macbook pro (summer 2006) and the guy at the genius bar told me I had to been wrapping the cord incorrectly and its my fault and i would need to buy a new one. so i bought a new one. I dont have any proof of purchase, its not like i kept my receipt. So not really sure what to do now

I never had that problem with the MagSafe on my old Macbook, but I have had the issue on the USB cable that comes with the newer iPods & the iPhone. It's always the end that plugs into the device that ends up getting frayed. I'm using the USB charger that came with my old 2nd generation iPod Nano (that I bought like 5 years ago), since it's re-inforced at the cable near the connector.

My girlfriend has a frayed cable on the charger that came with her 2008 Macbook... She bought it in October of 08 so I guess that puts her outside the 3 year window. I guess she is going to have to spring the 80 bucks for one.

Same here. What are people doing that they keep fraying- especially the poster who stated he went through SEVENTEEN MagSafe adapters. That's abnormal and the problem does not seem to be the cords, but the way he's using them.

I also much prefer my T-Style. Much better for my outlet location and the way I work with my MacBook.

Agreed. I have several AC adapters, T and L shaped and have never seen a frayed one. But I also see people be extremely rough with their equipment, epsecially power adapters. These things are fragile pieces of electronics, not construction tools.

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPod; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A334 Safari/7534.48.3)

T replaced a couple times over couple years.

This is utterly ridicules. The power cables fray due to lots of use by the owner. Everything becomes damaged over time. Does this mean we can have a class-action lawsuit over scratches or cracks on iPhone screens? Can I sue my creator because my body ages with time and will eventually break down? I'm simply flabbergasted by this ruling.

"This agreement governs participation in the iTunes & App Store Affiliate Program only."

Is App Shopper an iTunes & App Store affiliate? No. So you're not just off-topic, but wrong. 2 for 2. Good job.

Errr, yes. When you click an AppShopper link it leads to a redirect with the domain click.linksynergy.com and subsequent partner identifiers. That domain (or LinkShare, specifically) is Apple's partner for its affiliate program. So AppShopper makes money on every click-through, which is a clear violation of the ToS. If it wasn't part of an affiliate program, the link would go straight through to the web version of iTunes. Appshopper doesn't even host its own images, it just steals Apple's bandwidth through some sort of phony "promo content" guise.

Do you typically talk about things about which you have no knowledge? It's always hilarious to read things when people very obviously don't have any clue what they're talking about. :)

Care to explain how AppShopper *isn't* an affiliate? Or was that just an uneducated guess

Yup! I have the L and it's being "strained" no matter which way I plug it. And the only way i will plug it in, is, the wire to the back of the laptop because I can't stand how it blocks some ports (even though I never use em')

I also had the T adapted and I loved it and miss it. I was using it for 1 year and still worked perfectly.

oddly enough, I awoke this morning to an official Apple survey on my experiences with mag safe power adapters. Personally, I haven't had any issues with fraying, but I've only had the MBA since August.

I would love a solution that didn't block one of my ports if I don't put it in the right way, but overall I've been quite happy with it.

It appears that compensation is restricted to US residents. A little unfair, I feel - as I would meet the criteria for repayment if I were US resident :(

I hope your wrong, I bought a replacement back in June for £48.60 I just sent an email to apple after reading this article asking them how to claim a full or partial refund I will post their response here when i get it.

The cables apple supply are terrible quality. I've claimed, under guarantee, on two occasions for iPod leads.

Apple needs to stress test their designes in Arizona where exterior temperatures range upto 100 to 110 for extend times in the year. Cables just aren't designed to last in the punishing heat... and they should be.

If they were robust enough to take an Arizonan summer then no one else would have problems.

I've had the Dock connectors come part on me personally and the a few T-shaped chargers where I work.

#1 No one reads proper care guides and yank cords out.

#2 people bend and twist cables in the most hideous ways.

If Apple wants to keep selling to "consumers" and not "geeks" they'll need to do a much better job of idiot proofing their cables, which others have said so far, are overprice crap.

Rule #1.000000000000000000000000000001:
Do NOT pull the cord. Ever. Under no circumstances. Only unplug with the connector.

Fraying from the cable being moved around while plugged in is one thing, but there's a special ring in hell for people who are unplugging by pulling the cord. :D:apple:

You have got to be kidding. Number one- who the hell lives in Arizona without air condition? Number two- who leaves their Magsafe outside to fry in the ****ing desert?

As for your #1 and #2- that is Apple's problem how? What ever happened to personal responsibility and caring for your belongings?

God, I hope your post is a joke.

I have a newer Macbook Pro, which came out in March. What's weird about the L style, (or it might be the battery) It say it's 95% charged, but on the charger, it's showing green for a full charge instead of orange.

" that a settlement has been reached in a court case over the design of the connectors. "

Sometimes I wonder about Apple. It took a court case to make this right?

Its not just Apple, it usually takes court cases to get any company to admit fault and according to some comments here, they did replace it for free on a case by case basis for some users.

I'm in same boat as you, original 2006 T style an all. Don't sweat it. Too long ago to worry about. The extra bucks would be nice, but let's face it, we bought $2000+ computers back then. Are we really gonna sweat the $100 or less?

Idiot proofing cables? I take loving care of my electronics and I've had a few Apple cables fray on me with only light use. Sorry, they ARE poorly designed. This is not a case of "you aren't holding it right." Apple been playing this game for years. They don't build any slack control in their cables so the head takes all the stress. Apple is the idiot here.

My late 2007 MacBook Pro is on its third power cable. Well, first one was stolen at a conference, the second one which is the l-shaped style the connector caught fire, no sign of any fraying, just smoke.

Girlfriend has had two Magsafe connectors fray.

I've lost count of iPod cables that have frayed. Usually take them to the Apple Store and they swap them without asking any questions or filling in paperwork. Well, apart from one Genius who wanted me to book an appointment and at the appointment it took over ten minutes to fill in the forms for replacement.

I just discovered my L style magsafe is frayed the other day. Makes me sad. ):
