So there is also a thread on Reddit with the same issues - a few folks got replacements that have the same problem
- some were happy with the replacement. Has anyone noticed that this thread has now been viewed nearly 15,000 times? I don’t think this is going to turn out to be an isolated problem. Ugh.

Oh, hey... nice username. LOL. At least we'll all know your opinions on this topic in advance. :D

We remember that Apple had managed to find a way to correct the speaker problem encountered on the iPhone 8, by publishing a simple patch (included in iOS 11.0.2). It is therefore likely that iPhone X also benefits from a update in the coming days, or the next few weeks.
It remains to be seen if we will discover other problems on the terminal by then ...

Why do I keep reading stuff like this over and over on these forums? In addition to it being obnoxious and elitist, what evidence is there to support this assertion? I'd wager a large sum of money it doesn't exist.

It's the pinnacle of arrogance to declare that people whose opinions differ from your own are just poor and envious. To you and others: please stop. It's not constructive, and it doesn't reflect well on your character.
[doublepost=1510595036][/doublepost]

Much like I stated above, it's also speculation and rather silly to proclaim that people post to "make themselves feel better." People should be allowed and encouraged to express an opinion that differs from your own.

No, they're jealous, because it's the same people every year when new phones come out. They try to make new iPhone owners feel as if they got screwed with their new purchase. What a boring life they must lead and it has to be a sad existence. Actually I feel sorry for them.

Most speakers at there max sound not 100 percent clear. It’s a small speaker.

I have yet to hear anything that hasn’t been present on the iPhone 7s forward

Wow, you're really doubling down on this? It's so nuts. You're making a blanket statement about people you don't personally know, and even if you did know them, you're not in their heads. You don't know what the motivation is behind their comments.

There are some true Android fans here. I don't think they are jealous. Why they see the need to evangelize their preferred platform, I don't know...but jealousy isn't it.

There are also some people (like me) who don't especially care for some of the recent decisions. I have money, and I happened to be awake doing some work when presales went live. I didn't order. So, if I have the means and the opportunity, and I still choose not to purchase, that pretty much rules out the idea that I am "jealous."

Stop making blanket statements about people. Recognize that different people like different things. Some people might be jealous, but implying that it's everyone or nearly everyone is elitist, baseless, and almost certainly wrong.

I posted this in the other thread but I’ll post it here.

https://soundcloud.com/user966682/iphone-x-crackle

I mic’d my iPhone X and recorded it’s speaker, this is the crackle sound I get. To me it sounds horrible.

Apple store told me it was normal, and I did not get a replacement.
I’ll be honest, I couldn’t hear the problem with some of the samples that were provided in this thread. But your sample sounds definitely unpleasant. It sounds like the scratch on the records we play on an old 1970’s era stereo we inherited. Are you past your return period?

A limited but increasing number of iPhone X owners claim to be experiencing so-called "crackling" or "buzzing" sounds emanating from the device's front-facing earpiece speaker at high or max volumes.

iphone-x-earpiece-800x565.jpg

Over two dozen users have said they are affected in a MacRumors discussion topic about the matter, while similar reports have surfaced on Twitter and Reddit since the iPhone X launched just over a week ago.

On affected devices, the crackling sounds occur with any kind of audio playback, including phone calls, music, videos with sound, alarms, and ringtones. The issue doesn't appear to be limited to any specific iPhone X configuration or iOS version.

"Love the phone but I was wondering if anyone has had any issues with the speakers slightly sounding a little crackling whenever max volume," said one MacRumors forum member with the alias ShadowYYZ. "Noticeable on certain songs and even my ring tone which was bought from the iTunes Store."

For those unaware, the iPhone X's earpiece doubles as a speaker that combines with the traditional speaker at the bottom of the device to deliver stereo sound. Both the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8 series also have stereo speakers.

MacRumors hasn't been able to reproduce the issues described. Apple didn't immediately respond to our request for comment on the matter.

While the sounds could be the result of distortion, especially since they occur at higher volumes only, several users are convinced that there could be a bigger software or hardware issue affecting the earpiece.

"I listen to a lot of music on the speakers of the iPhone X and I noticed the slight crackle right away," replied another MacRumors forum member who goes by the username Benz63amg. "Since so many of us seem to experience this crackle then my assumption is that it's software related rather than hardware."

A few months ago, several iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus owners experienced a similar "static noise" issue with the earpiece during phone calls. Apple acknowledged the issue and fixed it in iOS 11.0.2.

Since the crackling sounds on iPhone X don't appear to be limited to phone calls, it's unclear if the issues are related.

Apple has been replacing affected iPhone X units free of charge, according to customers who contacted the company. Apple also appears to be collecting diagnostic information so that its engineers can investigate the matter, as it routinely does with any potential software or hardware issues.

Like the green lines affecting some iPhone X displays, this is an isolated issue affecting a very low percentage of the millions of devices being manufactured. The majority of iPhone X owners do not appear to be affected.

If you experience this problem, we recommend booking a Genius Bar appointment with the Apple Support app or contacting Apple via phone, email, online chat, or Twitter to have your iPhone X replaced. Apple is known for providing good customer service, and it is often genuinely helpful in these situations.

I noticed this, sporadically, while using AirPlay to my AppleTV, both while using the TV’s internal speakers, or its Bluetooth sound bar.
Anybody else experience this?

So bunnicula - not sure why you are on this thread but you are assuming something about me. I signed up for this thread yesterday after discovering the issue with my new iPhone. I have had an IPhone since the 3 and like them, which is why I am so disappointed with this X, which was a bit of a splurge for me. To get on the thread, I needed a user name and the one I picked reflected my thought at the time. Please don’t read anything more into it than that. I would hope you have better things to do with your time.
For others - my Verizon rep says Apple won’t ship a new phone until December so maybe there will be some type of fix before that. Let’s hope so.

I'm here because I'm a member and I like to discuss the topics and articles posted on the site. As you can see from my profile info, I've been a member here for a long time.

You just verified what I said, though. You logged on here to complain about how your iPhone X has failed you and/or how the iPhone X is a failure. Totally within your rights to complain about it and any other topic on the forum, but you are agreeing that that is why you're here.

Perhaps you will stay and post about other things, of course.

Why would I spend much time on it? I mean, I am replying to you because a reply to a quoted post is a courtesy, but you answered my question. I hope you get your phone situation sorted out. Don't assume that everyone on here didn't still have to work and/or save money to buy this phone. Most of us did. I mean, I didn't, but mine was a gift. Which has happened a few times in the 10 years that I've owned iPhones, but I usually work to make money to buy mine, so I totally get wanting a phone that works as advertised.

I would contact Apple about a replacement if this bothers you. Don't let the emphasis on "refurb" bother you. Nothing is refurbished this soon after a new release, and you'd be getting a brand-new phone in a white box, but it'll be new.

Just my 2 cents, having done the regular upgrade thing yearly now... I've gotten over whether or not it's perfect out of the box with serial numbers matching. You could get a new one in the box and have it fail next year and you'd wind up with serial numbers that don't match, but isn't having a working phone in good condition more important? I sell mine all the time for good money. You can do the same if you plan to after you get a new phone in the future.

You can probably hear mine better because I have a decent recording setup for micing my guitar amp. I used this to mic the phone.
I can return it up until this Friday I believe, but I won’t have a phone because there are none in stock.

Where are you located? You should keep a close eye on the stock and set up stock alerts, just in case. With all this going on, I'm half-tempted to do the same. Just in case mine flakes out before Friday.

Thanks, but a phone that can't be used effectively as a phone is indeed a failure. Good for you re how you get a phone yourself. And yes I know I would be getting a new phone - you are right they haven't done any refurb yet as they don't know what is wrong with the X and the speaker issues.

Seriously, playing music through the speakers in the phone....!!!! Ignoring the fact so many people feed the need to listen to clips or have speakerphone calls in public, which shows a lack of manners and disregard for others nearby, the quality is atrocious. No device with such small speakers (and little internal space to provide any sort of bass) can generate a decent sound. Just don't do it. It will sound like crackle or buzzing anyway...

My X was returned to Carphone Warehouse tonight. Gutted! As apart from the price I loved the phone. But the top speaker was just terrible. Even watching videos at 60% volume dialogue sounded harsh and anything 80% and above there was a clear crackle noise.
I take onboard the advice of those saying running the volume at 100% is bound to cause issues. But my retort is that at 100% volume my 7+ is clear but the same music at 70% on my X was terrible.
Clear hardware fault I think and I think nothing to do with software. Just bad luck. Wondering if I would wait a while before trying my luck again.

Oh dear, that’s not a good position to be in. I’m sorry to hear that. Can you pick up a cheap grocery store prepaid phone and wait and see how Apple sorts this out? That’s assuming you want to stick with iPhone X and don’t want to try an 8 or 8 Plus or even a Samsung (though my Samsung S8+ crackles like Pop rocks candy on calls) . I can’t believe you were told that’s normal. I’d pay another visit and test out the demo phones of all the models and see if they all are doing that. If it’s just yours and the demo models are fine I can’t see how they would say that’s normal.

Hi RedShovel. ^^^ good luck with getting a new phone. Sounds like we had the same problem. Verizon is sending me a new X - it was hard to hear the rep due to the crackling - again sounds like a blown speaker even at normal voice volume - and not on speaker phone. It is inconsistent though as last night I had a crystal clear conversation with my daughter - also a Verizon customer. One poster is talking about listening to music via phone speakers but no one here is doing that except for testing the integrity of the sound. I agree that I think it is hardware - hopefully the new one I get Thursday will be ok because I do like the phone otherwise. The dreaded notch does not bother me at all. Camera is awesome - which is why I bought this one. I remain curious to hear the scope of this problem over the next few days.

Not just an iPhone X privilege. I am experiencing this on my iPad Pro 9.7 and one time while using an old iPad 3.

That's incredibly dramatic. If your speaker has a bit of a crackle or a hiss, that's hardly a full-scale design failure. Maybe it was a bad production run. Maybe it's a software issue that needs tweaking. But, a "failure" is a pretty dramatic title to pin on something that's working for millions of people without too much in the way of issues. LOL.

"Good for you" I mean, are you 12? It was my birthday the day before preorders. That's the only reason I got it for a gift. I'm an adult human and my spouse and kids love me. That's not odd at all. I've bought plenty of these for myself and we bought one last month for my daughter as an early birthday present (she wanted the 8) because she hadn't updated in a couple of years. Surely, you are familiar with the concept of gift-giving, no? My husband and son both went with the X and they paid for their own and neither has had any speaker issues, either.

My point is that you came here to lodge a consumer complaint and you're using your screen name to do it. Totally your prerogative, but every time someone sees your choice of screen name, they're going to have a pretty good idea why you came.

Yeah... I think the "jealousy" ratio is probably pretty low on this site. People are buying iPhones or some other sort of smart phones and I doubt many of the ones who are too broke to buy an iPhone or a Samsung (whichever new phone, pick one) are exactly singing the blues about how they cannot afford a nicer smartphone.

But, it is kinda weird when people come here to harp on about Android phones because... not an Android forum and nobody here really much gives a crap, do they? I mean, if they want Android news they can go wherever it is Android people gather (I have no idea, for I do not like Android), right?

:D

I got mine launch day and it doesn't crackle. I have 2 other of them in my household, none of ours crackle. I have at least a half-dozen personal friends in different parts of the world who are currently using these who have no crackle. Try another. :)

I hope you get a good one this time and that this is an isolated thing.

How, pray tell, did I make "your case"?

You said "they're." Your pronoun referred to people hating on the iPhone X. You never used the word "some."

Furthermore, you responded to MY post which was a criticism of lumping everyone together and making blanket assumptions. So if you acknowledge that I'm right, then what exactly were you responding to?

There's no way to determine an "actual number of those affected." The article cited "two dozen" anecdotal examples, mined from multiple sources. To claim anything else would be speculation. THAT would be poor reporting.

What, exactly, is your issue with the piece and its writing? It seems reasonably solid to me.

Something like this would give more weight to the story’s claims: “After verifying and investigating over a dozen iphone user’s claims, we found these reports of crackling audio to be accurate.” A dozen people saying something on line as we know never makes it irrefutable or true.

How would you propose they verify the reports? That's logistically implausible.
