Of course 'Rip-off Apple' would never build an SD card slot into the iPad (like everyone else is happy to do!) for fear of not being able to squeeze every last £ out of its customer base, forcing people to the more higher priced memory versions and/or of course, purchase of these adapters! Im quite sure they wont allow peoples existing bluetooth keyboard to connect either ... heavens forbid ... use an existing keyboard when you can pay for 2!!!!

To be honest, Steve Jobs (the face of Apple if all's told) bears an uncanny resemblance to the UK's Labour Party; in that he and Gordon Brown seem intent on giving as little as possible and charging a fortune for it; whilst thinking of more ways to squeeze even more money out of you. Both parties need to start respecting their fan base else pretty soon people are gonna become alienated (as they were with Microsoft ... but me thinks the tide is turning!!!) ;)

Really now. Which lower priced tablet in the same size and weight of the iPad has an SD card reader built in ?

nm...

... as a fan of Apple products but with my head out Steve Jobs arse, its numpties like this that give Apple a reason not to include SD card slots or USB connectors on iPads (or even blue ray on iMacs) ... why should they when these Appleites blindly line Steve Jobs pockets with gold for nice stuff yes, but clearly specification wise inferior!

Wake up you nonces, get in the basement, smell the coffee, Apple stuff is great yeah and I'll keep buying; but Im certainly of the feeling Im being well and truly ripped off (as Im sure I will feel when we discover the UK iPad priced at £399 when they finally decide to tell us - which NB they haven't because at the £399 it WILL be, Apple don't want to create any product negativity whilst US sales are going well!)

You said specification when you meant feature.

And don't go off that it's running Windows and not our beloved OSX. The iPad is a large phone, without the phone.
Windows is not made for a touch screen, so that is a reasonable point.

The Slate is a full-featured computer, in tablet form

Infinitely superior. In every respect.

Every aspect? How much does it weight? How thick is it (appears to be about as thick as a MBP not an ipad). How long does the battery last? (Shorter than a MBP or an iPad, or else they would have already said). How much noise does it make? (seriously)

The slate is the same tired PC tablet being tried once again. Not to mention you chose to link to about the most deceptive article I have ever seen written about anything.. "About the size of a Kindle DX", not even close. Includes 3G so "it may cost less than Apples $629". The title of the article says it is cheaper and the first line equivocates.

I certainly hope I just missed your sarcasm.

iPad is clearly an adjective here. it says "iPad Accessories". So is "shipping", an adjective (at least clear once you get to the real verb, slipping. )

Amazing how folks not only don't read the articles but don't parse the whole title before wanting to hit the "submit reply" button.

Can understand why the initial couple of words read that way, but should have it the cognitive reset stage once get to 'slipping' in the sentence. Don't keep re-reading only the first couple of words.

****.

Look, I read "Shipping Windows on iPad", and obviously saw it followed by "Accesories Slipping". I got it very quickly, that yes, Windows was not shipping on an iPad. It's not like I have a reading comprehension problem. But, I just made a small comment because for a split second I read it as "Shipping Windows on iPad". I figured I would post that, because I was wondering if anyone thought the same thing, for just a split second.

Yes, I know "Slipping" is a verb. And no, I didn't really think that Windows was going to be on the iPad.

what a bad title for a blog post.

this is how everyone i know read it

Shipping Windows on iPadaccessories slipping as Pre-Orders mount

weirded out for like 5 seconds until i realized it was just another boring time window post

Still disappointed neither USB or SD wasn't built it. Those accessories seem an afterthought.

Same here...

Apple's obsession for making such a "clean" device is reaching a truly silly point. And all the "magical" marketing is making me sick to my stomach.

Watch any iPhone commercials and the focus is all about functionality.
Watch the iPad commercials and it's all the apple guys talking about how "magical" it is to hold the device in your hand. What are they smoking? (don't answer that).

I'm just saying it could be a lot more "useful" if it had a USB and SD card reader built-in...............and not any less "magical".

I thought the magic mouse the worst apple product but this clearly wins the title. Its running cell phone software, yet Its not a cellphone. It's not as powerful as a netbook, yet it's three-five times the price of one! It's supposed to be a "revolutionary product", yet its just a larger ipod touch, which denies it true portability. Its like apple said "alright lets not only create product which falls short of our competitors in every respect, lets overvalue it and market as something much better" I would rather buy an Ibook G3, at least then I would not need 45 accessories just get basic functionality of it. Apple should have hired me, I would have suggested that they just go head and sell the screen separately from the iPad. :apple: is obviously all about deceiving the public and sucking every last dollar from them.

I get basic functionality out of my iPhone. I use it all the time, and rarely to actually phone people. Also, I don't use any accessories for it except for a case to protect it. So, giving it a better screen and making it faster doesn't mean I suddenly need more accessories to make it useful. It's already useful for me. If you need a gazilliion accessories to use it, doesn't mean everyone else does. The iPhone does everything I need it to do. As I said, making it faster and giving it a better screen (which also means better apps by the way) isn't going to REDUCE functionality.

Are you forgetting this is Apple? Everything is overpriced... I'm surprised people don't understand this yet.

Some people like to dump $600, I prefer to invest $1,500.

It's about priorities. For the visually oriented, in particular, a Dell box just won't cut it.

Ahh, i figured someone would pull out something that doesn't even have released specs or a release date to try to say it's "better" than the iPad. Judging by the demo videos of any of these things running Windows 7, to me they're infinitely inferior to a device running applications actually designed for touch. But you're welcome to go for the HP if it fits your needs.

Yes but all this is from your perspective and not everyones.
You slate it for only running phone software.........If that phone software is so bad why is almost every phone manufacturer trying to mimic it?

You say that it supposed to be a revolutionary product but it is just a big iPod Touch........From my perspective that is a GOOD thing. I have had a Touch for years and there have been numerous times when I wished upon wish that I had the same thing only a lot bigger.

Dont get me wrong, I wish it had a USB port and some of the other things that seem to be missing, but as far as usability and enjoyment of use, it is a revolutionary product to me as there is no-one out there who has come even close to making anything like it.

I luvs me a giant iPod Touch <3

I don't think I'd even use a USB port even if there was one. I like to do everything wireless, so I wouldn't need it for file transfer or anything. Same for printing etc. I hate plugging extras into devices when it doesn't need to be done. My iPhone is more than capable without a USB port. I do need to be able to charge it, and I do need to be able to sync with iTunes for updates etc... but Apple's standard port does that.

Again, not saying anyone is wrong to want a USB. Just remember that it doesn't make the device useless. I use my iPhone everyday for most of my computing and I get lots of use from it without a USB port.

I wonder how many they'll sell in their first weekend of pre-orders. I think we'll find that most people don't want or need a full-featured computer in a tablet form factor. The Slate doesn't seem to be much more than just another in a long line of inelegant tablets that don't have mass appeal. Plus, it's not even set for release yet.

I've owned several tablet PCs and there is a reason they don't sell in large quantities. The potential has always been there, but the execution always falls short. I don't see anything significantly different yet with any of the newer offerings. You can't just dismiss the positives of the iPad running an OS designed for a touchscreen. That's been one of the biggest problems with tablets in the past.

Again, I personally think it's a bit silly to carry a mobile form factor device only to put it on a desk and attach peripherals to it, essentially removing the mobility. I can see having the optional adapters for those who need them, but most of the time I don't think I'd want to be connecting my iPad to external devices.

Windows is not made for a touch screen, so that is a reasonable point.

Windows 7 has native support for multi-touch in the base OS.

It's new, so you're right in the sense that not many Windows applications
exploit multi-touch, although all will work using your finger
like a mouse on the screen. I change my tablet to 125% screen
magnification, and most of the onscreen controls are fine for my
big fingers.

By default, Windows maps "pinch" and "unpinch" to the mouse zoom
wheel event - so any app that's aware of mouse zoom is pinch-enabled.

That's why all of the Windows 7 tablet demo videos look so clunky to me- this "use your fingers as mouse emulation because that's all the apps understand". Sure, it works, but it doesn't look like it works nearly as well as apps "home grown" for the touch environment.

Of course a lot of Windows apps won't be terrible. They'll essentially work, some better than others. Despite not being designed for touch, some will work quite well. However, all the apps on the iPad are designed for a touch interface. That's very different from the fact that Windows CAN natively function as an OS for a touch-based device. I don't want work arounds like zooming in to make things easier to touch, and emulating a mouse experience with my fingers... Apple have a system fit for the purpose.

Back on topic, I must admit that the official case is growing on me. I decided I was going to get a decent third party one for protection, but so far they all seem to be sleeves, zipped up cases, or just plain ugly. Now looking back the official case that I had previously dismissed, it seems quite intelligent allowing you to prop up to type and to sit on a flat surface for films etc. And if you don't want to take the iPad right out of the case to use it, you don't have to.

I'm still holding off as I'm sure a 3rd party case will eventually offer similar features, but it doesn't actually seem as bad as I first thought.

True, it will take time for slate-aware Windows apps to appear - but
that's the nature of the eco-system. First comes the hardware, then
apps come along.

Expect the first slates to ship with a set of slate-aware apps (like
ebook readers and the browser), and other apps to follow as the
market builds.

The big advantage of the Windows approach is that you'll still be
able to load any app that you already have on the slate. If you
need the ability to run Photoshop on that RAW image and tweak the
color balance - you can.

Funny, I seem to see Iphone users zooming a lot to touch things ;) .

Also, the Ipad will have some funny looking apps with full-screen
Iphone apps, until over time apps are upgraded to adjust the size
of the screen.

I'm waiting on a case as well. I want to see exactly how the iPad is held in place, and ultimately I'd want it to be dockable while in the case. Third party cases will probably be the way to go.

I agree totally. I went with ordering the Apple case because nothing else has showed up yet that's better. I was hoping for basically a clone of it maybe without the Apple logo on the back :) Will still probably get some kind of protective film for it for added insurance or for when i dont want it in the case.

Now to find a suitable "murse" to carry it in...
