I think this is a great idea and I may adopt this line of thinking :D

I LIKE IT!!

Seconded. Great idea.

Thirded...?

I currently have a 2007 iMac in which I upgraded the boot drive to an SSD (OS and apps) and replaced the optical drive with a second internal hard drive (data). It has extended the life of the computer, but when its time to replace it 3 or 4 years from now, I might also go with the mini + dual display option. The setups in this thread are inspiring.

Here is my setup:
Apologies for the not great quality pics!

Where'd... where'd you get those lamps? :O

This thread has made me quite a believer of a Mac Mini and TBD. May be my future set up.

if only they could fit in a legit GPU into it (6750+) and price it around 1000 it'd be easy.

Now if only the 6500rpm fan issue would be solved.. I'd be a much happier camper.

I have been considering a TBD as a companion for my mid-2011 MBA (13", 1.7 i5, 4GB RAM), but I am weary of performance/heat/fan speed issues. I don't really want to spend $1,000 and end up having my Air freaking out all the time due to the resource requirements of the TBD.

Does anyone else have experience with the MBA + TBD combo that they could share?

only loud with flash or gaming, but that's irregardless of the TBD.

My Macbook Air's fan would run quite a bit with the 27" ACD (non-thunderbolt). Drove me nuts so I sold it and got a Macbook Pro. Damn fans ran on that thing too, although not quite as much. Sold that too and ended up with a Mac Mini, Apple 23" Display and couldn't be happier. I'll be getting an Air again but will NOT pair it with a 27" or bigger display.

regardless

Hate to be that guy but you should never use "irregardless".

Hmm didn't know that using Thunderbolt caused the fans to stay on. Guess i'm best off with an iMac 27

IMO, the imac is worth if 1) needs real video card and 2) want integrated setup with no portability required.

With normal light use, the fans don't come on ever. The ambient noise in my house is probably louder than both the TBD and air. As the sig states, I have a 27" TB and a 2011 13" base..never had any weird issues with fan running for no reason.

Thanks dude. That's good news.

The Mac Mini doesn't run hot or its fans don't run very high paired with the TBD?

My mini usually idles around 60C with the TBD and normal usage its under 70C but have shot up as high as 90C when streaming movies via Plex server from a Western D FW HD to various clients. I do find a slightly higher temps read when using it with the TBD as opposed to 1920 x 1200 displays.

TBH that's surprising since the air with all its thinness performs the same with regards to temperature. Is the mini also passively cooled? And how are the fan speeds/noise if applicable?

I was going to say the same thing, and ask the same question. Do the fans run high to maintain that ~60C temperate? Are they very audible?

Because for the Air to maintain ~60C, the fans kick up to about 4000-6500 (6500 is max) RPM, which is very loud.

No, when its around 60C, there is no noise at all (my office also has somewhat high ambient temp). The mini has a fan inside but I don't hear it until the temps reach around 75C to 80C and even then, its still relatively quiet. It gets loud at around 85C. I let the mini control the fan speed automatically. Since the Plex server and Itunes app is running at all times, the mini never sleeps, just the TBD. The mini will also have a much easier time maintaining 60C with low fan speed compared to the air since it has so much more internal room for heat dissipation. I also have the mini -> to a Dell M2412 via HDMI to DVI in a dual setup.

I did notice the TB cable is warm, but I'm not sure if its because of the exhaust outlet since the cable is directly in its path (I have the mini standing vertically).

no @ 60C the fans are 2k rpm which is dead silent. Only gaming and flash video will force it to 4k-6k

Thanks for the answers.

Much to consider whether I should replace my Air with a Mac Mini, or even the supposedly new thinner MBPs...

I find myself not taking out my Air as much as I thought I would.

My set-up:

Mac Mini (2011)
Macbook Pro 13" (late 2011)
Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display
iPhone 3GS (16GB)
iPod Touch (64GB)
iPad 1 (16GB)
Apple Wireless Keyboard
Apple Wireless Mouse
Apple Magic Mouse

Off camera there's a few Windows laptops, which I haven't included in a Mac set-up xD

Thoughts on my set-up? How could I improve it?

Yeah my MBA fans run nuts as well, doesn't bother me when I've got my Bose headphones on though haha

Blurry pic, but I finally got around to posting it. It's a little messier now, but not much.

nice.

is that some artist's rendering of the shuttle or do you have any details on that pic? shuttle name? the payload? perhaps the info from the filename?

thanks

It's a real photograph. It's Discovery. Not sure of the payload - I believe one of the modules for the ISS. The photo is from another member - trekkie604. I believe it is a NASA image. He had posted it in the show your wallpaper thread and I PMd him and he sent me the link to his page with the info.
