Yes actually. I have purchased things on the macOS App Store that costed more than on their website not only for that reason but for convenience. Which is why I stick to Steam only for PC games because I don't want 400 games here, 10 games there, 5 games here and so on. I hate the fact I have to download Photoshop and others from the Adobe website and can't get it on the Mac App Store for example.

The world doesn't revolve around you.

And you are only focusing on the sunshine and rainbows fairy tale that every....single....app in existence will remain on the App Store. We wont have a choice once exclusivities happen and they WILL happen. People need to realize this and just stop with the fairy tale "oh you can keep using the App Store NOOOOOO PROBLEM!!!!". These arguments are very short sighted. I don't look at tomorrow, I look at a year from now, two years from now. Epic will have a store, they will have big name Apps as exclusives it is a guarantee.
You are making a very good to why apple needs to open up if they are so bad at competing that epic will have a better option for developers? Can’t apple just offer them an even better deal? Or do they need a closed system because they can’t compete?

Nothing stopping you from starting your own store and negotiating exclusive from other app developers.
Not really sure what you are talking about here? Look at my post it was about not being able to stick with the App Store only. And you suggest I start my own store? How does that help me stick with App Store only?

I have anti-virus on my mac and Windows PC. I don't want that on my phone. And as been said MANY MANY MANY times before - phone has you know PHONE capabilities that I need to make sure is always available for 911 or car breakdowns, all my health and financial data, all my contacts and email. My PC only has a fraction of my personal information.
No one is forcing you to side load anything, get it are we clear. If the option exists to download your favourite apps directly from the app developer or a link to a store their have an agreement, I don’t see what your big concern is regarding. Anti-virus on macOS now that is something I have never required in my 25 years of using the platform.

Is Steam so bad at competing? Not really sure you are making the argument you think you are making. Epic NEEDS exclusivities to even be able to compete with Steam. And it will need to do the same on iOS.

Because Xbox doesn't have a secure element with a clone of your credit card on it. Or a model of your face/fingerprint. Or your bank account. Or your health records. Or your daily travel patterns. Or two different camera angles of everything you see. Or a microphone to listen to everything you say. Or direct access to your phone number/calling and texting privileges. Or--soon enough--your actual drivers license.

The data on an Xbox, which has a significantly smaller user base than a mobile phone company (much less its own competitor the PlayStation), is small potatoes compared to the data on a phone.
I’m pretty sure a lot of people have their credit card set up on their Xbox Live account so they can, you know, buy games.
If sideloading automatically destroyed security it would be reasonable to assume a lot of people would have been compromised this way.

Like yeah obviously a console has less sensitive information (let’s set aside that you can theoretically do banking on an Xbox thanks to Microsoft edge being available), but there’s a lot of money to be made by exploiting it.

But let’s set aside stealing private information (which is more easily done via other means such as social engineering anyway), how come there hasn’t been piracy on Xbox? Surely if sideloading is a free ticket there would be a kernel exploit that allows someone to bypass DRM and pirate games right? No such thing.

Meanwhile the Google Play Store has malware inside apps that Google approved for sale, because their review process is near nonexistent.

I love Apple, but this is about control, not security.
Sideloading is not opening the gates to a security nightmare, sideloaded apps are still locked down.
You don’t even need to discuss hypotheticals, a lot of people use things like AltStore or appDB to sideload apps on their iPhones right now and another good amount of people jailbreak their iPhones, giving them even more power over the OS. It’s not as hard as you might think, which is what makes Apple’s insistence that iOS NEEDS to be locked down incredibly infuriating to me.

And if I need to download new stuff from websites, I always verify with a checksum if they publish that just to ensure nothing bad happened with the download. Especially when a lot of places have third party as download sources.
You do know this is apples fault and not adobe right? Apple is to restrictive and greedy(30% cut) for no benefit whatsoever for Adobe and thousands of developers

The email effectively talk about the App Store review process as they are more for show like the TSA. They have no procedure to detect an app who pretends to be something else or exploits code the review process catches such thing by chance.

Gotcha. So the App Store review process is basically a joke.

But at least the App Store can boot scam apps from the store when they are detected.

Good luck trying to get a scam app website booted from the web. ?

I can't wait to hear all the stores about the next fad word game that is only available via sideloading... but it's just a front-end for stealing people's passwords and contacts.

Fun times ahead!

:p

I’m fine with this, as long as Apple devices come locked down and can’t be unlocked without some kind of special authentication and plenty of warnings, and as long as it applies evenly to all devices. I’m talking Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft too!

You want to know why this is the case? Its because people want their App reviewed quickly. You want Malware and bad apps gone from the App Store? Lets make the review process weeks or months long.

Well you must not know a lot of people. All my grandparents suffered with malware issues which is why they are running iPads now.
Or it’s just not that common. Or somehow even the dumbest, most technologically illiterate of the people I know are actually not as bad as I thought.

I certainly would. I also would certainly NOT be using an iPhone because Android is FAR better in every other way except it is not a walled garden environment. I want Windows and macOS locked down. I am sick of dealing with malware at the office and on servers. I am sick of dealing with thousands of spams emails a day due to Zombie computers. I am sick of seeing websites and services go down due to DDoS due to Zombie systems helping.

I don't understand the logic if we are on Apple's side here we are just ignorant or just a blind Apple follower. I have HATED Apple for some of their decisions - 2013 Trash Can Mac Pro?! Butterfly keyboards?! Catalina being an absolute buggy mess?!
Sounds like you need to take a break from technology and devices or find a new line of work, may I suggest something outdoors.

Probably you are with smart people! Sometimes my family or friends tell me something that they did and I just shake my head like "how can you fall for that". For example, not really malware infection but one family member got an email from "apple" asking to verify account details with a link, and it asked for social security number and all sorts of details. THEY FILLED OUT THE FORM!!!!! I shake my head at least once a week and some stuff like that it is crazy.

Poor Apple. Hope they get their act together and earn some money in the near future, so they can afford more employees on these tasks.
Its not Apple, its the developers. Do you know any developer that wants to wait weeks or months for their app to be approved?
