My question being is why are you so triggered by Apple being first on the list. Apple definitely has been making some doom and gloom claims when it’s simply unfounded. As mentioned a simple toggle to permit side loaded apps and a pop-up message of the “possibility” is all is needed.

Even Apple own review process in the present closed ecosystem cannot 100% guarantee a user being safe but hey should it’s users not be able to sue Apple for not providing 100% protection. Just an honest question.
I can then ask you why are you triggered with Apples walled garden ecosystem when it's been like that for over a decade? Why are you triggered now when other models like gaming consoles have existed?

Not really sure what you are talking about here? Look at my post it was about not being able to stick with the App Store only. And you suggest I start my own store? How does that help me stick with App Store only?
Nobody is stopping you from sticking to Apple AppStore, if some developers I’d apps you use move to a competing AppStore, maybe voice your concerns to the developer instead of venting your frustration on MR. if the developer feels it’s best for their company to offer it exclusive or to offer it on many AppStores that is their choice to make and the only thing that would persuade them is if many of their customers feel to the contrary.

Its quite common, just to a search....

Developers rejoice or do tricks to speed up review process. The faster the review, the less effective Apple is in weeding out "bad" apps.

I'd like to see your source for claiming that less than 1% of people (mostly outside the US) want to sideload on iOS. Couldn't be any clearer.

Citation:
If we had 5%-10% or more actually sideloading on Android I could see your concern. But it is well under 1% and a lot of that is in countries with limited or constrained internet access. The numbers do not support that claim.
Think about this:
- Less than 1% sideload on Android.
- Less than 1% jailbreak on iOS.

I don’t believe I can serve any further purpose in your dispute with @dk001, I suggest you take it up with them.

As opposed to now, where Chinese government pressure makes Apple remove apps that the citizens have tried to use to organize and protest (and a variety of other situations)

That's better to you?
So it's better to open up iOS and let them free reign instead? Is that your logic?

But NOW is the time to STOP this from happening to begin with. It will be much harder for Apple to "close" iOS once it is forced open by lawsuits and bills.

Well you must not know a lot of people. All my grandparents suffered with malware issues which is why they are running iPads now.
Maybe your grandparents are a risk to themselves and best to strap them in a chair for they own good.

That is why we moved them from Windows to iPad. But if iOS (and similarly iPadOS) "opens up" they will have the same problem.

Another common one that happened recently, someone got a facebook message that "look what YOU were doing last week in this video" and it downloaded a "video player". If they had opened it up, it would have been re-install macOS time but I stopped them just in time.

If Apple must allow sideloading then they should just produce an iPhone that runs Android OS and this should be a physically different phone that looks like an iPhone. The user decides when they buy a phone whether they want Classic (IOS) or Android OS which google can support if they want. Being able to toggle between IOS and Android OS is should not be allowed.

Not defending Parler or apps like it, but it's strange to see you champion side-loading and other openness, but take a stand here. I get it where you're coming from, but the Parler "ban/censorship" is one of, if not the main reason conservatives are backing these bills.
Almost like the violent attempted overthrow of our democracy is a bright red line not to be crossed.

Because macOS doesn't do the one critical thing an iPhone does --- USE THE PHONE! That alone I think warrants iOS to have a higher bar for security than macOS. And yes, macOS being open is an issue, I have dealt with malware on macOS and even run anti-malware software just like on Windows.
Then lockdown iPhone back to the level of iOS 1.0. That would be way better for security than what we have now.

Probably you are with smart people! Sometimes my family or friends tell me something that they did and I just shake my head like "how can you fall for that". For example, not really malware infection but one family member got an email from "apple" asking to verify account details with a link, and it asked for social security number and all sorts of details. THEY FILLED OUT THE FORM!!!!! I shake my head at least once a week and some stuff like that it is crazy.
There are always going to be people getting scammed, the only thing good people can do is try to stop it ahead of time or in its track. Are you planning on monitoring these people 24/7 in the event they self injure themselves or others. Maybe best to just not provide them things that could cause them to be a victim of a scam such as a telephone, tablet, computer, email, regular mail, etc.

Its not Apple, its the developers. Do you know any developer that wants to wait weeks or months for their app to be approved?
With all the AI/ML Apple keeps highlighting and is it not being used to some extent with the app review process.

But you do realize that all these scam emails, scam text messages, DDoS of websites - they are all helped by infected machines known as Zombie systems right? That is why I think we should stop being so selfish. I no longer want 1,000+ spam emails in my email every day. I no longer want to help family and friends on a WEEKLY basis clean up their system or tell them to freeze their credit because they got scammed and gave out their social security number and other important details.

I got tired of the weekly calls from my grandparents about Windows 10 infections, so we finally got them iPad. Guess what, running just fine to this day and no issues. They have tapped on bad things, but it just attempted to download EXE files HAH!

So you prefer a government to exercise its overreaching authority onto a company rather than for its citizens to have the freedom to exercise choice.

Have we forgotten already how allowing users to install applications of their choosing killed both the PC and the Mac, and necessitated development of an all-new class of locked down devices?

Oh how short our memories are!

I don't like the precedent for more government control over things. We have enough of this crap already.

Sounds like you are enabling your grandparents rather than teach them the basics of personal information security. It seems you have involuntary overstretched yourself and rather than educate you have chosen to encourage by being a rescuer. I have news for you these people you rescue even though you are well intentioned will drain your energy.

Teach a man to fish vice feeding a man to fish, comes to mind.

If Apple doesn’t like US gov’s policies they don’t need sell in the US. US gov created this country, it is their platform, their rules. Apple can just sell in other countries. Or they can just compete in the free market by creating their own country where they make the rules. US gov is just trying to create policies to help consumers against big companies.
