I just purchased this app a short time ago and had 30 minutes to try it out. I used to be a big fan of Sim City on the PC and have owned and played all the versions including 3000 (on which the iPhone version is based). My initial observations:
- In terms of graphics and UI, this is a very impressive port of the game. Looks just like the PC version.
- Load and game save times can be LONG. Once you are in a game, however, the responsiveness of the game is perfectly fine. Zooms are reasonably quick.
- I did have a crash right after I first launched a city. After a hard reset, no more crashes (yet).
- No hills or valleys in this version of SC3000. Everything is flat.
- You cannot customize your terrain when launching a new city. You can only adjust the % water and % trees sliders then let the sim auto-generate a map for you.
- There doesn't appear to be a way to rotate the map. You are stuck looking at it from one angle only (that's probably why there are no hills). A semi-transparency effect is used instead so you can see whats behind the buildings.
- You can't add small bodies of water.
- In-game animation (cars, smoke from smokestacks, etc.) looks slow and extremely sparse compared to the PC version.
- Unlike the PC version, when you place a road or structure, you get the chance to confirm or modify the placement area before you commit. Very nice touch.
- Eats the phones battery like crazy. This will have to be improved if were going to play for any reasonable amount of time away from a charger.
- Ill have to play it a lot longer to know how well the simulation aspects of the game work. There could be a lot of issues here that we haven't seen yet. Crossing fingers that's not the case.
Overall, I'm initially very impressed. I'm sure this is several updates away from perfection though.
