Thank you for pointing it out. Jesus. I'm getting tired of these forums. I barely come over anymore due to the amount of idiocy I read here. Some of us are capable of using Apple and still thinking objectively. I'm an apple user and - think apple is no better than a thief with a knife - (hyperbole of course). But I can't stand the hypocrisy of running commercials with gandhi's images while forcing foxcon to mount nets between buildings to capture "suicidees," or purposefully denying users updates to force upgrades. Yeah, I'm bashing.

Better watch out. Your logical post may get some negatives, lol. Bow down before the Apple gods.

Why do people think that Siri wouldn't work on an older iPhone? Nuance had a Siri app in the App Store way before Apple got ahold of it and it worked great. Why would an Apple version run any worse? It's just more tied into phone features... still the same core software.

Does Siri do all of its voice recognition online? If not, why does it need a connection anyway? I mean, if processor's doing the processing, then I understand the requirement of a fast processor, otherwise, it just needs to upload the voice sample and download the data… which would mean that Siri is running on a server and not even on your iPhone!

Siri will run on the 1st iPhone ever released - the only limitation being the edge network. Siri's a software which records your voice, sends it over to a server to do the decoding, and sends it back to you with the response. The reason why the iPhone 4 does not have it is simple - "profit." The same reason why the original iPad had its camera removed at the last minute. So people will upgrade and upgrade and upgrade. I don't blame them - but I also won't refrain from calling their douchiness.

Minus the fact that they are with holding X% of the value of the phone from their books to account for the updates. So that argument is a fail.

It could hold up weakly in the part for face time but they are not putting the full value of the phone on their accounting books for 24 months to account for the updates. The missing part is what pays for those updates so nope that argument right there is a failure.

That's all server side computation.
From what I've read (from a forum user), there's a local list on the 4S that Siri checks against and then sends it off to the server if she doesn't find a match. Once I can see it answering more complex questions I'll believe it. Until then, I'm not convinced.

One less reason for people with iPhone 4's to upgrade to the iPhone 4S. I guess its true, Siri was just used to market the iPhone 4S. So typical of Apple.

Hopefully this will be available at a later date for the reason that they didn't want the whole world crashing Siri at the same time. There've already been reports that Siri has had problems keeping up with the load at times. Imagine how much worse it'd be if everyone with iPhone 4's down to iPod Touches were hammering Siri in addition to the relative small number of 4s owners.

Share it, or ****. Nobody gives a crap about you and your "achievements" unless you share. I mean, really, if you're doing it for yourself and don't want to share, what exactly is the point in bragging to the whole world that you've done it, other than exposing yourself for the big douchebag that you are.

Just because you are too dense to think of a reason doesn't mean there isn't one. Off the top of my head I would say that this discovery puts pressure on Apple to explain their decision - possibly even open up Siri to iPhone 4 users in the future. Also, people already have pointed out the sticky legal issues that would arise if they released the hack. Use your ****ing head before posting on the internet.

You'd think people would eventually see through these blatant ripoffs where Apple intentionally cripples software updates for capable phones just to bump sales of the latest model.

But, apparently not....

Which is more likely, Apple releasing Siri for the iPhone 4 at a later date, or Google releasing Ice Cream Sandwich for the Nexus One and HTC Droid Incredible? There have already been hacks showing the Nexus One running early builds of ICS, so it's theoretically possible.

Next goal for the hackers, make the iPhone4 browser as fast as the iPhone4S browser, I bet it's also just done by software and don't need a dual core, it's all just marketing.
After that even the die-hard apple fans will slowly realize what a joke update the iPhone4S was

No Arn, you couldn't be more wrong. Gather around and I'll tell you reality: I remember getting firmware upgrades for my various Symbian smartphones before the iPhone era, such as updating the P900 firmware waaay back in 2003!

( Another example of why the rating system is broken - you got 40 positive clicks for your incorrect statement!! So far, I've got -1 for my factually correct statement. I'm sure -1 will grow to be much more negative! )

I had a P800. From my recollection, I got some bug fixes, and that's about it. I also had several Nokia S60 phones, from the N95 to the N97. Again, I got mostly bug fixes, with some limited new functionality. Nokia released S60 v3 "Feature Pack 2" a few months after the N95 was released, and had it running on phones with lesser hardware than the N95. Did that phone ever receive it, even though it was still being sold as "new" for over a year? Here's a hint. It's the same answer as to whether Google will be making Android 4.0 available to the Nexus One.

There were never any technical reasons for not making Siri available on the 4 or 3G... it was/is strictly a marketing move...

There is nothing in the 4S (hardware wise) to easy convince 4 users to move to the 4S... a faster processor... and a slightly better camera... but for many... what Apple has in the 4 is good enough... in order to get people to make the switch to the 4S they needed something BIG that was exclusive to the 4S... intro Siri... I'm sure Apple has a number of other things on the drawing board for a new iPhone 5 this year... but realized that they could not have them production ready in time for a launch in 2011... but they knew they needed to come out with something to keep the buzz, buzzing around the iPhone... so they dropped back.. slapped a better camera and faster processor in the 4 body... and lock down Siri to only work on the 4S... this gives them a quick turn around on a new model... and buys them another year in development for the 5... I'm quite sure when the 5 comes out next year it will be AMAZING... but the 4S was just a "point release" to satisfy the consumers while they work on their next BIG thing...

Apple isn't really targeting iPhone 4 owners with the 4S. They are targeting iPhone 3GS owners and people who don't have iPhones. Most people who bought the iPhone 4 are still under contract. The iPhone 5 will be for them. The 4S is a substantial processor update whose advantages will come in time. I suspect it will be the budget phone 2 years from now when quad-core phones with 2GB RAM are common, but will still be able to keep up with most of the latest apps and iOS updates while the iPhone 4 may not.

So it should work perfectly on the iPad 2, with the A5 processor and all?

Do you have ANY idea how massive an achievement Siri is, or the hundreds of thousands of R&D that went into it?

What does that have to do with the fact that Siri was an app available freely on the App Store for over a year and a half?

Gather around youngins. Let me tell you a story about the days before Apple in the phone industry.

You bought a smartphone. The exact version of the software that came with that phone, was the only version of the software you would ever see. Bugs and all.

arn

Wrong.
First of all, how can you tell Arn, have you had ALL the different phone models made in the decade to where the iPhone was released.
No you haven't so you can't say what you said.
I had plenty of different models (Nokia, Siemens,Sony Ericsson....)before the iPhone was released and some of them had updates, especially Nokia had updates and sometimes the update came with extra functionality.
But, in no case was it so dramatically as new iOS on older models.

iPad 2 with A5 chip is a natural choice for Siri but...

Apple needs to sell iPhone 4S with Siri and I guess we all could understand why it isn't available on other similarly fast iOS devices like iPad 2. I am trying to guess when Apple would work around including Siri with older devices when iPhone 5 or iPad 3 hit the market. Those devices released in 2012 would in all likelihood include Siri as a marketing feature. Imagine the introduction of iPad 3: Retina Display!! Now with SIRI!! iPhone 5 would include 3d Mapping integration with turn-by-turn Siri!! plus NFC!! plus Augmented Reality!!

I am wondering for those iPad 2 owners like myself, will we ever receive this Gift from God?

It could be hardware limitations still. Hardware limitations of apple's Siri servers.

Exactly. People tend to forget that the internet isn't an infinite computational powerhouse, and that someone somewhere has to pay for massive server farms, and in turn, they have to pay for themselves. If you think Apple would create all of the server farms necessary to enable all current iOS users to upgrade to Siri for free, you're crazy.

Maybe in the future when things have had the chance to be streamlined, Siri is out of beta, and there's a new iPhone out; I'd guess at iOS 6 if ever - but they could also just wait two years, when the 3GS and 4 are no longer being sold, and all new devices will be sold with Siri functionality.

[EDIT] I forgot to mention the iPad, but I think it's a similar story: the iPad 3 will have Siri. The iPad 2 MAY get Siri in iOS 6 - if Apple decide that Siri is a suitable feature for the iPad.

It's hardly the same app. The version on the App Store had to have "shortcuts" to get it run properly on all devices. I'd like someone to do a very thorough review on Siri and why it can/can't run on other devices.

I don't know, maybe that Apple *bought* Siri for (rumored) more than $200 million? And maybe that they invested more so that it could work more efficiently, and all the money they invested into servers and hardware?

No clue, really. Apparently people believe that companies manufacture or come up with stuff for free and then extort money from helpless consumers.

Is it possible on iPhone 3gs?

Well, the 3G S has the same amount of RAM as the iPod touch 4G, and the same CPU architecture but the CPU is clocked at 600MHz vs 800MHz on the iPod touch.

However, the problem is that Siri has only appeared on 640*960 resolution devices, getting that to scale down to 320*480 could prove difficult.
