What does that have to do with the fact that Siri was an app available freely on the App Store for over a year and a half?

During that time, was Siri able to access functions outside the siri app? Was it able to access your calendar, text messages or contacts? No, it was only a search app.

Apple sucks

Enough Apple. Saying Siri won't work on the 4 was a lie. It should also work on the iPad 2. The 4S isn't as much of an improvement without it. Not worth upgrading apparently. Very shady apple.

Did Apple actually say that siri would not work on the iPhone 4? Link?

So, siri being hacked suddenly makes it unavailable for the 4S? Siri is still a feature of the 4S to everyone (since this hack is not available and may not ever be more than a proof of concept).

Actually, I hope Apple does something to stop this on the server end. The Siri back end is strained enough and doesn't need a bunch of freeloaders using it on their iPhone 4's and Touches.

I use my iPad 1 with the nuance app and it works great taking notes.
Mind you it doesn't open programs, call people etc.
But the transcribing is great.
I would purchase Siri as an app, as the mic in the iPad seems to be ok for this.
Much better then the mic in my BB.

Folks, this is no big deal. Siri is just a gimmick and you tire of it very quickly. I had the iPhone 4S for a week before I went back to the iPhone 4(battery life issues) and I was interested in Siri for about two days and then I never accessed it again.

Siri may have been a gimmick for you, but I use it all the time to set up appointments and reminders. And using it while driving is great, as I can actually read and send text messages without looking away from the road.

Add to it that chart is pretty messed up for Apple and needs to be heavily changed. Does the 3G support wannabe multitasking (big feature in iOS4) nope does not. So it really not updated

3GS did not get the extra ring tones in from iOS4 and I know it was locked out of some other features.
Lets not forget the BS siri block on everything other than the iPhone 4s.

Sorry but unless those basic features are added the chart is pretty much bogus.
The link covers the other parts of the problems in trying to make something out of nothing with BS.

Does your iPhone do any less than when you bought it?

No. In fact it does more, Apple gave you those extra features for free. They didn't have to, but they did.

Siri can definitely run on the iPhone 4 since all the processing is done on Apple's servers. Had they made Siri available for other iDevices, most people would not upgrade to the iPhone 4S. Also, if iPod Touch 4th gen. can run it, first gen. iPad can also run it. Most people here were defending Apple saying Siri requires powerful hardware...

Are you really suggesting that people who bought their iPhone 3GS 2 years ago wouldn't upgrade for the faster processor, higher storage capacity, and better camera if they could use Siri? If that's the case, why did Apple bother updating the 3GS at all? By your logic, wouldn't more people update if Apple discontinued the 3GS or didn't update it to iOS 5 at all?

Siri is advertised as Beta. While the demos make for a good commercial, I don't think that Apple sold 4 million on the first weekend because it had Siri. People panned the October 4 launch, remember?

Did Apple say that?

No, they never said it couldn't work on the 4. They just said it's exclusive to the 4S.

In fact, there was an earlier, less developed version in the App Store. Granted, marketing likely played some role (since they pulled the app slightly before the 4S was launched), but it's also possible that they didn't want the server overload from having tens of millions of people on Siri all at once.

I actually have the old app, but never really got into using it. It doesn't really nearly as good as what the 4S users have now.

So typical of Apple. They give their old users the very-useful iOS 5 updates on devices over 2 years old, such that those oldest devices will continue running the latest iOS software for probably 3 years total, but save one cool little app as an upgrade incentive for their latest device. What greedy bastards. That's not like other smartphone makers, which give all the latest and greatest software, including the basic OS updates, to even their 2-3 year old phones, the day the OS update is released, because those guys are so much better and not-evil than Apple. God, I'm throwing my iPhone 4 away and getting an Android. I can't wait!

HAHA, just what i was thinking.

Too many Apple apologists. This was a douche move on Apple's part, no ifs ands or buts. Whats wrong with acknowledging that Apple is a corporation out to get as much money out of you it can? Why make excuses for them since they only care about your pocketbook?

Why is it? Everyone's compatible iPhone got new features with iOS5, I really don't understand why people moan when they get new features for free, that the big feature is left behind. So what you got free stuff!

Yes, correct, you got big fixes, improvements, some times better efficiency performance ( i.e memory speed ) and maybe some new functionality if you were lucky. However Arn was trying to say you got none of the above.

From Series60 fp2, I believe, it was also nice to be able to update OTA without having to backup and restore your phone!

Give apple credit were due: they've done a good job of making new iOS's available to older phones.

My point is that I never got FP2, even though the N95 was more than capable of running it. That wasn't entirely trivial. FP2 had a redesigned Bluetooth stack that actually worked with my car, while FP1 didn't. FP2 also had a redesigned menu. For that matter, there were still "current" phones (e.g. N91) that never even got FP1. My N97 had a few more substantial updates, but still nothing as dramatic as getting Symbian^3. Nokia has gotten a little bit better as of late, releasing Anna and Belle.

Arn exaggerated a little bit, but before Apple, it was almost unheard of to get more than bug fixes.

Apple: making a free app cost $199 and calling it magical

Well it is a cool tool. best I have seen, and funny also. That they made it to run on only on the iPhone 4s has Steve Jobs name all over it. Reading his book says this was the intention all the time. iPad 2 can run this even better than the iPhone 4S can and I figure iPhone 4 can do it also without much effort.

I hate saying it this way but I hope for some things that Apple will change a bit. Something like this is one of those things they should change. Still who know maybe for all we know 5.1 will actually put this in.

Did Apple say that?

No Apple has been mute on everything about Siri, still its a beta is it not.

I think the reason why Siri does not work on previous iOS hardware is related to how much the Apple data centre can handle right now, rather than the limitations of the hardware in existing devices. I am hoping that we will see it on the iPad 2 and iPhone 4 in due course once it comes out of Beta.

Did Apple ever explicitly say that Siri "won't work" on any other iOS device except an iPhone 4S? I don't recall such a claim. But please feel free to show me where I'm misremembering. What I do remember is that Apple simply said Siri was only available on the iPhone 4S. It's a major leap to say Apple said it would only work on the 4S.

Also all of you careerist Apple Bashers you might want to take some of the other theories as to why Siri is only on the 4S right now -- such as the one that the 4S universe is a big enough test sample and but not so huge as to overload the servers. We've seen instances where the Siri servers do get overcome w/ just the 4S being serviced. Imagine if Apple added the 4 and iPad2 to the mix. Sire would fail and they you guys would be harping about that.

So Appl includes it with the 4s. Let owners of the 4 and ipod touch have to buy it on the app store for $50.

Problem solved. It's like getting the latest version of iLife on the next revision of the iMac.

I don't see why Apple wouldn't take the opportunity to make some money and just call Siri "bundled software" with the new 4s. It could be a selling point, then. (comes with siri, a $50 value).

People who buy the cheap 4 or free 3gs could buy Siri if they wanted it.

I don't think Apple took that "opportunity" because, I think it makes more business sense the way Apple did it. Apple is probably making more money per unit by having people buy the iPhone 4S rather than having people pay for a Siri upgrade on older phones (esp if you consider the extra servers and such they need to pay for).

Plus, there needs to be an incentive for people to buy the new phones in order to make AT&T, Verizon, Sprint, etc happy. The improvements of the 4S over the 4 was incremental rather than a complete overhaul... and if Siri were available for purchase on a 4, that difference between a 4S and a 4+Siri becomes even smaller. That would mean less people breaking their contracts early for an upgrade and/or more people purchasing the 4 + siri for cheaper than a 4S (meaning less profits for all companies involved).

It's also not the same as iLife. The iPhone is Apple's cash cow (not computers) and again, they need to also make the cell providers happy too.

Yes, it'd be nice if Apple released Siri as a purchase, but it's really just wishful thinking right now. There's a reason why Apple has become one of the richest companies in the world...

Siri is still in Beta. I'm not defending Apple - because if they don't put it on the 4 (at least) - it's a bit obnoxious. But that being said (and so have others) Apple might want to have limited the beta test to 4S owners instead of slamming their servers with both 4 and 4S users.

Case in point - there were LOADS of server issues the first few days. And that was JUST with the 4S activations.

Do the math.

Hopefully they enable Siri for the 4. And if not - ultimately that's Apple's choice.

Ditto. Its quite shocking how narrow minded some people can be. I love Apple, but I dont have wet dreams about them! Some people cant understand basic facts, like "Apple were NOT the first to come up with a touchscreen smartphone" or "Apple are NOT good at doing online services".

Its ok to be a fan and still be critical!

Then we get all the kids, silently down voting....as if that does anything other than back up that we've got a bunch of childish members.

Edit: See what I mean....pathetic.

5 thumbs up :)
