Time to upgrade my iPad mini 4, although I had hoped for the iPad Air 4 design. If the mini 6 keeps the same logical resolution as before, touch targets and text etc. will become slightly larger (by 6%), which is a good thing.
My Mini 4 still runs fairly well for what I use it for - web browsing, ebooks (best device ever for this!), photos viewing organizing and editing, maps, messaging, (great for typing with thumb!). The A8 these days ain’t fast, but it it’s not annoyingly slow either. 2GB RAM is usable.

It can probably last me couple more years at least, so if this new Mini isn’t a smaller version of Air 4 (not 3, dammit!) I won’t be interested.

Good call. The mini screen was way too small. Good in concept, not in practice.

I largely agree, but personally I’d like to be able to use the pencil, a slightly larger screen plus more more memory plus faster CPU is welcome, and I already skipped the 5, so overall I’ll be okay with that upgrade.

Home button? If this isn’t like iPad Pro design I’m not buying it.

why does apple refuse to make the product everyone wants?
Everyone? Little bit of an ego problem here methinks...

I’ll be picking one of these up precisely because it doesn’t mimic the iPad Pro.

it's not bigger

smaller bezels makes bigger screen
How amazing would it be to do what they did with the 13" MBP. Reduce the total volume of the iPad and keep the screen size that everyone likes (and that differentiates it within the iPad lineup, especially considering all the iPads super overlap each other as it is).

to get people to buy the iPad Air 4 which is a bigger jump in price than before if they want a less dated design
That doesn’t make sense though. Just like the iPhone 12 mini, the iPad mini’s demographic are people *specifically* looking for the smaller form factor.

I bought my mini 5 after having owned a 9.7 iPad Pro, and I bought it specifically because it’s my favorite form factor. That was my sticking point, no other feature was going to sway me from getting the size I wanted for my needs.

Darn... My mother-in-law's iPad mini 2 Retina is getting to be pretty bad these days. I was hoping for a jump to a device without a home button.

However, this might work out ok, she went with the 2020 SE for her personal phone and then shortly after her work phone was upgraded to a 2020 SE. So perhaps continuing with a home button for her iPad isn't the worst thing that could happen.
Agreed . The learning curve is massive for seniors (no disrespect to your MIL...) and the increasing amount of gestures required is extremely frustrating if its harder to control spurious and furtive movement.

My dad has my mini 5. When I told him about the possible refresh specs, it didn't do a thing for him. There needs to be more to the mini update, in my opinion.
I have lots of modern Apple hardware but my girlfriend still uses an iPad Mini 1 daily at her makeup station to watch youtube videos. While it doesn't do other things nearly as well as an iPad Pro, it fulfills it's task.

Valid point. I was hoping dad would be a little excited. And if he was, I was going to surprise him with one. He may be in the same mindset as your girlfriend.

And all of the "pro users" of iPads out there forget that the iPad was designed to be a simple, straightforward and easy to use device as an alternative to a Mac.
I know plenty of (older) people who only have an iPad as their "home" computer for email, facebook, ebooks and photosharing. They have it because computers are overwhelming.
Why must simple, single usecase products slowly evolve into the product they were trying to replace by being simple in the first place.
By 2025, there won't be a touchscreen anymore, just gestures. 3 finger swipe to power on, 4 finger pinch to take a photo, 9 finger criss-cross to play music out of your UI-less speaker.

Just laminate the screen and I'm in. I can't deal with that clunky slate of glass ontop of the display after moving from an Air 2 to a Mini 4 and finally a 2018 11" Pro. It's just too chunky and cheap looking.
All three of those iPads you mention have a laminated display. So... huh?

Yea I mean, too bad the iPad only comes in one size and one size doesn't fit all...
I get what you mean and I own a lot of iPads i’ve picked up along the years. The mini, the basic 2018 ipad, and a 12.9 iPad pro. I personally like the concept of the current mini but it’s the iPad i use the least. I think they can keep the same footprint and increase the screen size and make it more compelling.
But you’re right choice is good, but it’s still a business and they have to justify a product and have it appeal the most amount of consumers to make it viable. I have no idea what the sales figures for the mini are, but I think a slightly bigger one will appeal to a wider audience.
