meh....i hate the design, the need to come up with a new design, they need to stop using their years old design language. but i will say that introducing a bigger ipad to the market wont hurt anyone.

Having the iPad 3 I can tell you that after awhile of holding this bugger it starts to get a little heavy on the wrist, so the thought of holding a nearly 13" model for any length of time would be agony. Trying to hold such a large iPad with that bezel too, how can you do it easily  without your hand touching the screen?

Maybe you need to spend sometime in the bush with the Kangaroos building up some muscle!

You obviously know nothing about the iOS SDK nor the developer guide lines. For one iOS is effectively resolution independent. Second Apple has been telling developers for years now not to assume a 2X multiplier or any specific resolution.

The thing people seem to forget or don't know is that for iDevices like the iPhone and the iPads the display technology is not screen scaling but only screen doubling. That means unless they completely change the tech that they have forced the app developers to use, the new screen sizes will always be the same aspect ratio as now with pixel densities that are even multiples of what they have now. That is why you don't see a retina iPad Mini - you can't fit +2000 pixels in that small a space. Apple will probably have to change to screen scaling eventually just to get higher densities in the mini or will be perceived as losing that battle. Other aspect ratios will act like what happened in the iPhone5 - some programs will have black bars until a special version is made for the new aspect ratio.

yeah, because people use pieces of paper in landscape mode all the time.
Actually yes we do, especially if you need to make a quick sketch or drawing. Or even if you need to post a notice.
a standard 8.5 x 11 piece of paper is 13.9" diagonal 4:3. Guarantee this would be used in portrait quite often for things like magazines, newspapers, pdf's and browsing the web in general. legal paper (8.5x14) is the 16:9 widescreen of paper, how often do you see that being used? I'm happy to see talk of a digital pad of standard letter paper finally.
I use my iPad in both modes so I don't see a problem here at all.

Jobs was right. And as soon as Jobs died Apple rushed out the iPad mini. I think this is one of the few cases where Jobs was right.

Are you a complete idiot, it has been well documented that Steve Jobs gave the go ahead for the Mini. Further Steve was a marketing man and that means selling the product you have now, not the one you wish you had nor the one that you have in development.

People read far to much into what Steve said in the past. The man is dead let him rest.

If there was a larger iPad, I'd still go for an Air. They have the same battery life (if not better for the Air) and for the price you get more bang for your buck with the Air.
Right now laptops and tablets serve two different purposes. Frankly a laptop is a poor mobile device, at least for travel it is. Laptops have their uses though which is why I have a MBP along with an iPad 3.
I understand there might be a niche market for a larger iPad, but if one was released I'll choose the Air over this because for couple hundred more (presuming the price would be at least $100 more for each of the larger iPad's storage sizes than the regular iPad) you have a full blown computer with a lot more ram and power.
Pricing does become a problem. The larger iPad would need to be significantly more powerful all around to justify its price. Still we are talking about two different products here, if you need a laptop a tablet will never do the trick.
I've been pricing the regular iPad and MBA now because I would like a portable system and I just cannot justify an iPad (esp. since I would only keep them a few months before ditching.). This is what I would do.

Why would anybody with any sense buy a product for a few months of use then ditch it! Makes no sense to me. I try to get several years out of my laptops, iPhones and even a couple out of my iPad. I'd rather save up some cash to use else where, a good show, a trip in winter, food, or whatever.

The iPad mini fits in your pocket? Wow you must have gigantic pockets. Mine just fit in my iPhone 1 with case. Also for me holding an iPad mini to your ear (as you do for a phone) would be a little strange. But if you love the mini, fair enough. I can understand this.

It fits in my pocket, along with my wallet, keys, iPhone, and on somedays a can of drink if i run out of hand space carrying breakfast on the way into work, im a tall chap, and my pockets are to scale :D

... Ok, I kind of want a giant iPad, as I use the iPad and a pressure sensitive stylus for painting, and this monster iPad looks like a dream device for that.

Mmmm.. Giant iPad.

Sadly I doubt this is really in the works but damn I hope it is. Probably more niche than the mini or usual size, but will fit a load of people's usage a lot better.

I'd rather have a touchscreen, retina iMac for that kind of thing. Especially if they built it with (or you could get an after-market part) to allow it to be horizontal for such use. How cool would that be?

----------

funny how a lot of you dismiss the idea right away because it's not the way you use the product. what stupidity is that?

a lot of people could use this.

Remember how many people said (of the first iPad) that it was just an over-sized iPod touch and that no one would buy it? Didn't the iPad create its own product category? I seem to remember reading that somewhere...

My point was... why would they consider a third screen size for the iPad... when the iPhone is only offered in one?

Because there is demand for very different sizes. There are plenty of people very happy with the iPad Mini, and plenty of people who would never consider buying one. I think a 13 inch iPad wouldn't be the top selling iPad, but I think it would be good for a million or two sales a quarter, and many of them coming from laptop users, not iPad users.

----------

Maybe if they put in Haswell CPUs instead of Apple's A6? Imagine the battery life doubling from 10 hours to 20 hours?

Haswell instead of A6 means battery life cut in half.

Actually, giving the iPad Mini phone functionality as an optional model would be a genius move for Apple. They wouldn't have to fool with making Apps conform to a new size, they wouldn't have to add another phone to their line, and yet they would appeal to all of the people who want ridiculously large phones. If they were to make a larger screen for the iPhone, I would think this would be a great way to do it.

That's what I would do. Making phone calls is only a tiny percentage of the use for many users of high-end smartphones. The iPad Mini would be the better choice for many, many current phone users if it could make phone calls. Yes, it's inconvenient for making phone calls. But it beats having to carry a second device, or having no phone.

There is also demand for phones in very different sizes too.

In fact... there are phones for sale right now that are larger than the iPhone... proving there is a market for larger phones.

However... there are hardly any tablets approaching 13"... and not many above 10.6" either.

What does that tell you?

So where should Apple put their focus? Larger iPads or larger iPhones?

BTW... if Apple offered a larger iPhone... it would sell much more than one or two million a quarter.

I'm fine if Apple wants to make three sizes of iPads... as long as they make at least two sizes of iPhones ;)

(3.5" 3:2 screens will be phased out with the next revision... leaving only 4" 16:9 screens)

BTW... I can discuss anything I want here... it certainly got your attention :)

sure, discuss penguins making bacon out of pandas if that's what you want.. still doesn't make any sense.

There is rumors of bigger iPhones too.. and this 12.9 inch iPad is also just a rumor.

Well I see. A king sized pocket for a king sized man. That makes sense.

Why a bigger iPad?

As a musician which would you choose?

A Painter? No doubt the the bigger one

It probably won't happen.
But it makes sense.
The easy way is to strip it of some extras (back camera for example) and price it at the same price as the regular iPad. Same price but different targets, makes a lot of sense. Would be cool for students and hardcore readers.
But the screen resolution would stay the same, changing it would be suicide with the crazy numbers reported in the article. And 4/3 ratio is perfect for a tablet, Apple knows that and won't screw that up like every other tablet maker.

The hard way is to create something new, maybe take the current resolution and double only one of the dimensions, making it 4/6 from 4/3 (2048x3072). Enable it to run two regular apps at once, or one app optimised for the new screen setting. It would be a much less portable machine, but would have a very big audience with the right apps (publishing, content creation) and would kill one of the main Windows 8 tablet benefits.

Widescreen tablets are not worth it. I got a newer Windows tablet, comparing a 4.3 ratio to 16.9 I rather have the 4.3 because its awkward to draw on a 16.9 screen.

Those home-screens look horrific, looks like an iPad you'd find at a disco for 11 year old girls. Oh Apple...

Every one is entitled to their own opinion but I would buy this in a second. I also feel a very large group of professionals would also want this. Designers, artists and virtually anyone that has to share/present content (sale staff for example, insurance agents, architects, real estate...) I could on an on.

Bring it!

As a musician, the arrangement in Garageband on iPad is an excruciating pain to use. I'd much rather use Logic Pro for that.

Your arguments only take screen size into account, and not weight, heat, portability or the impossible-ness of holding 13 inches of tablets without getting a back injury.
