That looks like his old gen 16" compared to the AR 14" version from Apple lolHow did you get it so early?! Thank you for sharing Looks great
Exactly my situation. Just don't travel enough to justify it, but will suck to travel when I do. I think the more annoying non-travel scenario is if I start working more out of coffee shops/etc.Thanks OP. This picture helps.
I went with the 14" too (also coming from a 16" MBP) but I've been second-guessing this (and other config options) constantly since ordering. With the M1Pro 16" being an extra half-pound with this new generation, I think that tips the balance (pun intended) towards it being a desktop replacement - I'm going to hate traveling with it.
It's a tough call though - compromising on screen size (which benefits me daily) for the few times a year that I need to travel with it feels like the wrong call. I could just buy a second monitor for the 14", or I could keep the 16" and travel with the iPad Pro. Decisions, decisions!
This is exactly my debate. I have an iPad Pro M1 12.9", and then a 13" M1 MBP I'm replacing. Been back and forth between getting the 14 or 16. I don't have an external monitor at home right now, which makes me lean towards 16 for that reason. But then I think — maybe a 14 and an external monitor is a better approach? It's a tough call though - compromising on screen size (which benefits me daily) for the few times a year that I need to travel with it feels like the wrong call. Since I've got the 12.9 iPad Pro, ill trade in the 13 inch MacBook Pro for the 16 inch since I won't get a monitorThis is exactly my debate. Don't the 14 and 16 inch displays display the same image dimensions, just scaled differently? I mean, the 16 inch has more wide / tall pixels, but it's really just the same display area / aspect ratio as the 14 inch, just stretched out to a larger area? You don't really get any more effective display real estate with the 16 than the 14, right?Since I ordered the 14” Pro, I wanted to see if I’d miss the extra 2 inches of screen real estate. I don’t think I will, this 14” looks like the perfect size (at least for me)!
Hopefully this helps others in deciding which size to go with!
Oh gosh, I'd be lying if I said I didn't have 2nd thoughts choosing the 14" over the 16". Coming from the 2019 16" MacBook Pro, I was looking forward to the smaller 14" & when it was announced on Monday, I impulsively bought it. At the time, it just felt right. You know what I mean?I went with the 14" too (also coming from a 16" MBP) but I've been second-guessing this (and other config options) constantly since ordering. Pixel density is higher though in these new MBPsI ended up going with the 16".
The effective 1512 x 982 resolution of the 14" at native 2x was a little too small as I'm used to 1080p resolutions for laptops and didn't want to step down to a considerably smaller work area (or add blurriness by using software scaling).
The 16" with it's 1728 x 1117 resolution @ native 2x is much closer to what I need for my use case.
When the 17" MacBook Pro was a thing, I brought mine everywhere for years & it didn't seem like a problem then so... what's my problem now? ?

No problem at all! I kept going back and forth whether I wanted to stick with 16", but I do a lot of traveling and would love to take my Macbook with me. However, it won't fit in my daypack I like to use for photography and have been carrying my iPad Pro with me.While I obviously see the benefits of the 14", I can't see myself downsizing from a 16" to a 14". Since the 16" has slim bezels and moderate volume (vs a gaming laptop for instance) I found it not so heavy to carry.
I would pick 14" only if I use if i worked extensively on the go/outside which is not my case.
Anyway thanks for sharing !
This! I'm planning on picking up an at home monitor, so really I get the best of both worlds. A great sized Macbook for traveling and a large screen at home. I usually prefer using an external keyboard and mouse at home anyways.Just get yourself a monitor at home. Working on two screens is a pleasure. Every person who I suggested to use notebook + external display + docking station ended up loving such setup. I work on both laptop and external display (as a main one), some just use external display and notebook lid is closed.
If budget allows - go for LG 5K (new or on sale / second hand), but overall a nice WQHD (2560x1440) 27" display with thin bezels will work out great too (of course it will not be as sharp, but scaling will be perfect).
Using only laptop screen at work or home office is just way inferior solution compared to a proper big external display. Does not matter if it is 14" screen or 16" screen.
This all applies when multiple apps, tables, notebooks, chat programs etc. are used and info is getting from one app to another.
When on the couch and simple single tasks are done, even 13" is just fine / perfect size wise.
IMO: 14" will be great for travel and great at home with external display. There is no compromise in such setup.
