I call shens. The Gawker post has no proof other than a screenshot with nothing but a "Steve Jobs" for credence. Plus, in all the other emails, Steve has short, curt replies, with a "Sent from my iPad/iPhone" sig.

Sad, too, I actually enjoy some of Gawker's blogs (Lifehacker, Deadspin)

I'm afraid I can't fully answer all those, as I'm from the UK where our political system is completely incorruptible (that's a joke BTW, just google mandelson and his digital bill not to mention the recent expenses stuff).

But about the health care bill, the american system IMHO needs a drastic change. I'm completely biased of course, as again being a Brit I loves my NHS warts and all, and from what I've seen and heard of the american health care system as it is (including from american citizens who've had to re-mortgage houses to pay for treatment) something is needed to improve it.

Plus every government blames the prior government for it's woes, it's the way it's always been.

This is all completely off topic from this thread though, needless to say that the depths of my cynicism knows no bounds when it comes to politics, big business and the media

I have to totally agree with you on all aspects. It is sad that the government we elect refuses to support those that elected them. My only point in my reply was that ALL media sources are biased and controlled on what content is released and reported to the people. That is why I watch two opposite sides and then let my own common sense, values and traits lead me to make my own decision on the subject.

I agree that we got off topic and I apologize to everyone else but Fox was attacked when it was not needed...If anyone wants the facts then they should be open to both sides of an issue and make a determination off of both sides...not one. They are ALL corrupt, just like our governments.

I didn't say that Google is doing any better. I'm saying Apple's abusing people's honest will to keep their kids away from porn to keep the App Store monopoly.

Where is the problem? If they keep your kids off porn while still being in control of their store's content, what's wrong about that? What do you expect apple to say:"We don't care about your stupid kids, but porn is such a bad thing, we won't allow it!" ... what nonsense is that?

For those who don't get it: APPLE does not allow porn because they don't want to be associated with porn. It's easy as that. They want to sell iGadgets to EVERYONE including your kids.. If you don't like porn but know that it's available in the appstore, you won't buy an iPodTouch for your kids... Where is the abuse? And for those who cannot live without porn-on-the-go: you know how to get it...

And what's up with that "monopoly" ... they have a monopoly ...

Oh and by the way:

To all you americans out there: are you really wondering why boobs aren't allowed in the appstore, but "guns" are??? Take a look under you pillow.....!! ROFL!

What a waste of time, if you don't like Apple or there products or Steve Jobs then do not buy them etc. Apple make amazing products and we all have a choice of what we buy and what we do with them. If this guy doesn't like what Apple do then he can jump back on Bill Gates wagon because thats sooooo much better lolololololololol  NOT!!

Let the inventor make what he wants.

Steve Jobs wants to build and sell things a certain way at his company. It's up to the individual customer whether they want to buy those things or not. I can understand wish lists, but some of the angry letters and comparisons to European dictatorships are totally over the top.

Imagine loving exotic racing cars and wanting to build your ideal one, only to have people call you an ******* for not building cheaper sedans. Or you want to build the best barbecue and people put you down for leaving out a microwave.

If you don't like what Apple sells, then buy something else. It's been said, but you don't have a "right" to every feature being included on every device.

SJ wins. He led Apple from near bankruptcy to earning more than $3 billion in profit every quarter in just 10 years. He started the revolution of MP3 players and made the Mac popular again. He did it again with the iPhone and now the iPad. What has Ryan Hate done? Nothing except be a bitter idiot ranting his worthless self to the world's most famous/brilliant CEO. Go take your hate elsewhere, it's not welcome in a world of intellectuals.

Well spoken, Mr. Intellectual.

It's pretty sad how people defend a faceless company. SnowLeopard, Steve Jobs does not love you, nor does anyone at Apple. You are simply a consumer. What have you done that allows you to critique Ryan? He is a journalist. You are in high school.

Ryan made some good points, while you may not agree with them it's not like his statements were out of left field. How about instead of attacking his character and crying about how he may have offended Steve Jobs and Apple, you should discuss his points and why you think he's wrong.

Of course that kind of civil intelligent conversation might be a little too complicated.

Jobs seems pretty insecure the entire conversation. What is that guy trying to prove and to whom? Why can't he just take the high road? Instead all of his emails are just plain rude. What a queen.

Gawker is pathetic... after the unreleased court documents specifically note that Gawker is desperate and willing to extort Steve Jobs for media attention... meh.

It could be faked e-mails. Anyone with a brain cell could Google "Ryan Tate" and realize he's a Gawker junkie.

This exchange really tells us nothing new about Jobs but it sure does out this Ryan Tate guy as a big-time jackass with some major character issues.

While what you're saying is technically right, it's ethically wrong. "With great power comes great responsibility".

You might want to figure out what ethics are before using the word in that context. "With great power comes great responsibility".....? Apple has NO moral, ethical, or legal responsibility to provide all services that people want. They are a corporation that choose products/services based on how they see fit in their company. There is no ethical boundary being crossed by not offering porn, or any content for that matter, to its customers.

My estimation of Steve has gone up after hearing this, to know the CEO of one of the worlds largest corporations to openly and personally reply back to a random persons email and opinions is fantastic, the guy must get thousands of emails a day.

Having said that I still don't agree with some of his views, (don't get me wrong I love my MacBook and iPod Touch) but its this sense of the Apple ecosystem that has drove me away from ever getting an iPhone and the reason why I have a Nexus One which is fantastic.

Good job though Steve at least he personally tries to defend his opinions rather than hide behind his PR or legal department I'll give him that.

Awful, awful "article".

Still, Jobs' replies are pretty pathetic too. Freedom from porn? What a joke. Way to completely fail to understand what freedom means. Maybe I should move to China so I can get freedom from porn, foreign news, and government opposition! I love how he speaks like porn, information theft, and high battery drain apps are only associated with the "PC", LOL!

Is this guy turning senile or does he just get more and more out of touch with the world with each passing day?

Mobile Safari has Porn.

I love how that clown Jobs insists he's only doing what's best for his users. BS. Your users want Flash. Your users want the lame iPad to be more than a giant iPod Touch. This guy roasted Jobs for all the right reasons. The only people that object are dullards that align themselves with companies.

This is a big problem, open the flood gates and you end up buried in porn.

i suppose and I see where you're coming from, but I have a feeling that the app store would fill up with a bunch of crap real fast if the rule wasn't there. just my 2 cents :p

I don't think Steve J. is so much againts porn as he is against being a primary source for porn. The reality is once the flood gates open app store would be flooded with so many apps as to make the service useless. Jobs knows full well that you can go shopping for porn via the web.

What people have to realize is that app store is just that a store. Like all stores what you can purchase there reflects upon the store. Take for example magazines which can be had at book stores, grocery stores and hardware stores. You might find some dead tree porn at the book store for example while nothing at the other two. It is up to the management of each store as to what they should sell. You could walk up to the manager of your local grocery and demand that they sell you some porn but frankly it isn't likely to happen. App store isn't any different, Apple doesn't want the association anymore than the grocery or hardware store. Speaking of hardware stores, how many always have what you need?

The whole arguement that Apple needs to sell everything under the sun on App store is silly. Nobody has that ability in physical goods, not even McMaster-Carr, so why must Apple support every possible piece of software on App store? Frankly the demands being made for more freedom on App store are simply ignorant and don't reflect reality.

Interesting read here. steve does still seem pure.

one-on-one email from Ryan Tate to Mr Steve Jobs himself. cool

linky

Frankly, a lot of "journalists" these days are nothing but passive aggressive types with a mean streak and political agenda looking for quotes to put in a boiler-plate of an article that was pre-written before the interview even started.

Whenever I get an interview request like this, I find out who their editor is, their political connections and negotiate final approval of the article before it goes to publishing.

One guy I worked with in the past had a trash article written about a new venture he started. He ended up hiring a private investigator to track down the personal life of the "reporter" and boy did that tell a lot!

I am surprised that Steve even took the interview. Steve's last quote is great. I forget who said it but someone said, "It is easy to be critical of the successful since they built fortune on risks and failures of their past."

Steve has been more public than usual lately. WWDC is going to be a lot of fun this year.

Even Ryan admits he made a lot of dumb arguments, and that they were poorly argued.

If that blogger want's freedom, why don't he allow unmoderated comments in his blog?

His wife is out of town so he gets drunk and start wasting Steve's time? How about going out with friends and having a good healthy time?

It's a bit odd seeing people get wound up about the unavailability of porn on the App Store.

If you want porn, and as many others have said, open your browser on your computer and go online. Or is it more a case that the iPhone/iPad because they're portable, are easier to hold in one hand while jacking off with the other?

Seriously, I don't see the need for porn on the iPhone, provided via a dedicated app. I love my iPhone as it is, I enjoy browsing the App Store knowing whatever I download is safe.

And, on another note, I'm a 31 year old man with a gorgeous 26 year old wife, so suffice to say porn is not something I personally require. ;)

No we don't want that. Speak for yourself.

I have to say Flash is horrible and if you want proof look at MLB.tv also though i havent watched it on my pc much because i use boxee or PS3 but all of the problems have been the last 2 years with there Flash/nextdef programs i watch a few games were the stuff just was unwatchable to where i found out about boxee. but back when they were on Silverlight there were no issues with it at all.

There are many in history that disabled, enslaved and slaughtered millions of humans in the name of "best for the people."

Someone isn't getting a press pass for WWDC this year.
