Yes you do have a choice still. It's "buy ipad or don't buy ipad". This is how things work. Apple makes a product. You read up about it, play around with it. You decide if it's worth your money or not. It isn't. You don't buy it. Done.

I don't get how people still haven't grasped this concept.

It's like every citizen is legally required to own a iPad.

Excuse me but however anybody puts it, it's still control. People keep saying that 'don't buy it if you want Flash', now if I opened a club saying nobody but whites are allowed in would people say 'just go elsewhere' NO, it's controlling and me stopping people who want to come into the club.

I'm sick of these idiotic moves that have been allowed recently... first the internet piracy crack down and now this... why should I be told what I can do and where I can do it.

No Flash is only affecting it's users... Flash is very powerful, and users should have a flippin choice what they want to use... the app store is another thing. Also you have to pay for a license to develop software for the Mac? I heard this and if it's true that's ridiculous and Mac is much more money hungry than Microsoft... people need to stop bumlicking Apple.

There is so much wrong with this post I am only going to focus on one correction because I dare no delve in the realm of racism comparisons and the like. Since you are comparing Adobe Flash and developing software for a iPhone/iPad/iPod I think it should be clear that you also have to pay for Adobe's products at a much greater premium then what Apple asks for ($99). If you went with CS4 Flash I think its around the $180 range, but for CS5 I think you have to purchase it in a package and the cheapest package including it is $599. I am a Flash developer/webdesigner in my leisure and really do not take offense to Apple shutting down Adobe, as much as everyone else here is. The only pain is that I have to make sure I follow up with a html/css site, which should always be done as it is just good practice.

It's truly a sad age we live in. People are so brainwashed that they rather have other people make decisions for them instead of thinking for themselves. If you want to go the no porn route, then don't look at porn and monitor your children. Don't let companies say what you can and cannot do with a product you purchased.

We're making a choice when we buy an Apple product knowing the company doesn't allow porn within their app store. That's the choice.

I honestly don't know what it is with kids today and porn in the first place. Get a life...

i think a lot of people are too. but we should be given our own choice to decide what we want to do.

Really? So which commercial TV channel do you choose to decide to watch your porn on television? What, you don't get a choice to decide?? But you should. Call the FCC up and tell them you should be able to choose porn on free-to-air TV if that's what you want to do.

Have something to say?
I honestly don't know what it is with kids today and porn in the first place. Get a life...

Most here are arguing for freedom, not directly for porn. No need to belittle the opposition, that's an easy to spot sign of a bad debater.

Really mature. And "pawned?"

I agree.

If Jobs supported no guns, and all the gun applications in the app store were taken down, I think there would be a lot of very puzzled and angry people. "But it's only an application about guns. What's the problem?"

IMO "It's only porn, what's the problem?".

Sorry, I'm realise this isn't in PRSI....

Don't kid yourself. There's a difference between guns and sex. People view those very differently.

I support Apple's stance to keep their baby platform clean of porn.

Mr Tate used a lot of foul language and antagonism that was entirely uncalled for. It's not very civil.

Forget politeness, though, Apple/SJ are both right and wrong at the same time.

Jobs: People are free to choose. Spot on, Steve-o.
BUT this puts a demand on Apple to satiate consumers. Time and profits will tell. Do I sympathize with Tate? Yes. But the issue is not freedom. The iPad/iPhone need not be an end-all be-all for everyone. But Apple can't just pursue it's vision either. There's a lot Apple has had to revise about its vision, due to market demand. (2-button mouse comes to mind. Or matte vs glossy. Or the 'randomness' meter in iTunes. Consumers may be stupid, but they hold the money.)

Yes, and the difference is a very strange one. While most parents would never want their children to go on a shooting spree, these children are exposed to copious amounts of gun violence in a lifetime. On the other end of the spectrum most parents would be pretty sad if their offspring died virgins, yet any media about sex is awful and pornographic.

The hypocricy of culture hurts a logical mind.

By 'freedom' Jobs means 'restriction'. The guy is sounding more and more like a modern age fascist.

He leads singularly.
He believes his values and belief system are the only ones that are right.
He wages war on opposing technology to his values, shutting them out instead of competing side by side.

Seriously. Do you not think that Apple's Board has had these discussions and they've come to decisions that guide the company forward? I think it's odd that Steve is so openly responding to emails, but he's not wavering on the principles and decisions that have been established in the Boardroom.

As is being presented here... the iPad/iPhone platform supports *two* platforms... native and web. Those that want Flash on the web platform need to be barking up Adobe's tree, not Apple's. Until Adobe delivers a usable runtime, Apple doesn't want it.

I think all this squabble about restrictions and totalitarian platforms etc is ridiculous.

Is apple restrictive? Yes.
Are you forced to buy it? No.
Even if there are no other "like" competitors, are you still forced to buy it? No.

End of story.

As for this kid, err man it seems; downing some whiskey, rum, or whatever he was drinking and then emailing a hugely powerful ceo at 2 AM with prissy immature insults wasn't the wisest of moves, but he plays it off pretty well in his article.

I can't be bothered parenting, so I'm gald Apple exist to do it for me. Heck, if more companies followed their lead, I wouldn't have to do a thing to raise my child.

I'm having difficulty grasping this concept. I'm assuming you're advocating this position from your own successful personal experience, ie, you're saying you never saw any pornography until you were of legal age (which I believe is 18 in the USA)? And if you did look at porn, it was with your parents monitoring you?

So how old were you when you first looked at porn, and what were your parents doing while you were looking at it? It's a serious question if you're sriously advocating 'monitor your children'.

Awful, awful "article".

Still, Jobs' replies are pretty pathetic too. Freedom from porn? What a joke. Way to completely fail to understand what freedom means. Maybe I should move to China so I can get freedom from porn, foreign news, and government opposition!
QFT.

I'm glad there's no porn, but Jobs doesn't seem to understand the concept of freedom.

Yes you've all heard the innate wisdom from the 19 year old graduate of the Oregon public school system. All this knowledge and wisdom from his long life's experiences which he departs unto us by the kindness of his heart. By the way it's spelled hypocrisy

I am with you. Seriously... who is looking at porn on their phone anyways? I can honestly say I've never used my iPhone to look at porn. What would be the point?

When I started to like Apple, they become more douchebags than ever before. Damn arrogant and powerhungry company.

I wanted to go all Apple soon, but now Im not so sure about that. I agree with Tate, when he says that Apple is enforcing their morals on us users.

Its not as easy as to buy, or not to buy an iPad. The fact is that Apple is ruling the second majority of the computer market, and there is a whole ecosystem of developers, users and businesses depending on Apples products.

Apple seem to think that their only customers are fans, who will bend over for anything Apple wants. I think computers has ethical rights to uphold. Like letting people use it for what THEY want. Thats why its called a PERSONAL computer.

Now its less like "Apple iPad" in your hands. Its more like "Apples iPad" in your hands.

That's just one viewpoint.

Your positioning sex as being an equal to porn. They're not. Taken too far, and both can be dangerous. Open your eyes up to the large populations of people whose lives have been destroyed by their addiction to either or both. It is a problem.

I agree that there's too much violence being portrayed in media, though. And I also feel that helping children to understand and make their decisions about both starts at home.

I really don't like hearing about things like this. Makes me think less of their products if they engage in such trivial behaviour. The journalist comes off as a t**t (even if I do agree with some things he said) but shame on Jobs for responding as he did.

Maybe I should move to China so I can get freedom from porn, foreign news, and government opposition! I love how he speaks like porn, information theft, and high battery drain apps are only associated with the "PC", LOL!

Is this guy turning senile or does he just get more and more out of touch with the world with each passing day?
I like porn but it's not a deal breaker. Love apple products!! There are great selections from the app store!! Most netbooks don't have disk drives but USB port. So, netbooks should have app store like steam for games, but what about other types? if u want porn, then search on safari! My user exp under close sys is way better!! I like long battery life and speed of apple products!

Sadly, I have to agree with you and I say sadly is because you are right. Its pretty sad when day cares, schools, Apple, Tobacco Companies, Alcohol Companies and Violent Games are all brain washing our children to become terrible adults. Oh dang, were are the advertisers and commercials that tell our children to do drugs???

Parents...Do your job and teach your children the difference between right and wrong. Let them ask questions and give them honest answers, because if you dont, I guarantee they will find out on their own and by then its to late. Society can NOT raise them for you, take responsibility and teach them!

Tate says…

"…Adobe tried to **** you guys…"

That's not a reporter or a journalist—that's a pajama-clad blogger. Wanna be taken seriously? Write, speak and act like an educated, serious person.

Gawker will soon have serious bills to pay.

(Ha! Even this site is mature enough to insert **** instead of the lazy expletive used by Tate.)
