It seems like Steve feels he shouldn't be questioned. Bill Gates, whatever one thinks of him, handled questioning and criticism much better and he had a whole lot more of both than Steve ever did. Gates would alway be relentlessly positive. Despite Steve's complaint that the journalist is negative, in that exchange Steve sounded even more negative.

Granted his manner can be abrupt and brutally honest. I can accept it - in his case - since it's backed by demonstrable ability and a clear desire to make great products before time runs out. He is, no doubt, acutely aware that life is short. On the other hand, if Jobs had no track record and was just being an aloof, autocratic jerk, then I'd be agreeing with ya.

Bottom line: In the brutal world of business, directness, clarity, and experience all count. We don't normally see that, because all too many CEOs hide behind their PR departments (often at Legal's insistence).

****in right Steve!!!

We can defer to Steve's vision as the Apple mobile platform gets overwhelmed by Google. Android is growing much faster than iPad/iPhone. That has a lot to do with the open nature of Android.

It has nothing to do with the openness unless you're a nerd. The reason why it's selling more is that it's free to use and is available on more carriers than the iPhone. Normal consumers don't care about open, they care about usability and price. Tell me, how many of those Android devices were sold for cheap or free? That's a driving point that no one has brought up.

And per this whole email exchange - Gawker has already shown their true colors. I'm surprised Steve even responded. The people who work at Gawker are childish, puckish, and definitely do not understand the concept of journalistic morals. No one should even give two ***** what they have to say anymore.

Ouch!!! The Truth Hurts!!!

The "do nothings" criticizing the doers? Time to look in the mirror before you start pointing fingers......

Jobs hit on a very bottom line truth......trolls, critics, whiners, etc. create NOTHING of value. Yet they have no problem endlessly ragging on people who do.

Anyone can be a critic. How many whiners have actually visualized a new product and actually brought that product into reality?

I applaud Apple for being a closed system. It allows them to maintain control over their vision of how they want THEIR products to work. If you don't like it, move along to Windows, Droid, etc.

Preface: I am a white male born and raised in America.

American society and culture is so bizarre.

In a video game, you can shoot people in the face with a shotgun but god forbid there be drugs or sex in a game

It seems to me that every one that is complaining about losing their freedom to choose due to the lack of flash or porn on the iPad is missing the fact that apple also has freedom to produce any device they see fit.... If you don't like that... Your free to choose another product that fits your needs... If you've bought the iPad, you must find something useful.... I love mine & found I use it much more then my other devices now.... But it has limitations... & I'm fine with that... I'll just use another device when I need real power....

(yes american)

Something I often notice when action movies are shown on US television. They'll leave the point-blank headshot in, but will edit out the word **** (wow, I can't even put the incorrect spelling of a word in here, mental.) I live in the UK now. There are naked boobs in the newspaper. It's great.

The entire exchange illustrates the worst of bloggers. The questions and responses were immature and unprofessional. (Note: not the conceptual kernel of the questions, but rather how they were asked). Also it's a key tenant of true journalism not to inject oneself into the story, which Tate obviously does, then inserts his wife and parenting skills too as if that makes Tate's point more accurate or relevant.

What really surprised me is why Jobs even entertained him for more than the opening question, or really even bothered with anyone from a 2nd rate site like Gawker.

Mac hardware (MacBook, iMac etc..) cost more than standard PC hardware which is true and not reasonable...

you make this useless statement, then I read your signature where you claim to be a first time Mac user (complete with a little smiley emoticon) and the phrase "Once you go Mac, you don't go back." And your screen name is "MacbookDan"

A wee bit confused are we? All i've read is vitriol from you about Apple...please, just sell your macbook and leave this forum.

Oh my gosh! I am 199% sure that I have spoke with Jobs in these forums... that sounds JUST like many users on here. I bet you he does have a MR account.

What like DVD players and camcorders?

DVD players and camcorders don't give you direct access to porn. Just can't turn them on, hit a few buttons and voila, you see a naked woman. While the porn industry did help in the format wars( Beta vs VHS, etc), it isn't easy for a kid to go look at porn simply by having a dvd player and camcorder.

The iPad is easy, so controlling if it has porn apps is necessary if Apple wants parents to buy their kids iPads because parents today expect the companies and TV to be responsible for controlling what kids see/watch/do then themselves......

Would be kinda cool to have a preference somewhere where you can choose what app categories you want. For instance I am annoyed by all the sports related apps clogging up my searches. Why can't I hide all "sports" and unhide "erotica" so my searches about "balls" return meaningful results to me?

Couple it with the parental control stuff and you're all set.

By 'freedom' Jobs means 'restriction'. The guy is sounding more and more like a modern age fascist.

He leads singularly.
He believes his values and belief system are the only ones that are right.
He wages war on opposing technology to his values, shutting them out instead of competing side by side.

Newsflash: If Jobs is the Antichrist himself, just stop buying his stuff. "Problem" solved.

I think we'll be able to look back at this mess and use it as the example of how the majority of bloggers should not be taken seriously. It's like another variation of yellow journalism.

You do have a choice

i think a lot of people are too. but we should be given our own choice to decide what we want to do.

You do have a choice.

Last time I checked, buying an iPad was NOT mandatory. If it's not what you want, choose something else.

Why do so many people on these threads think Apple must make products that fit in with their own particular requirements? Apple, like every other commercial company in the entire world, makes products for profit. It's the companies' choice of what to make; it's your choice to buy or not.

Is that too hard to understand.

So, Ryan Tate is saying, "I hate the iPad because it's not going to fight for freedom."
I love Steve's response.:)

Jobs surely knew the exchange would be published (like Gawker can keep secrets :D ). What better way to silence your detractors than by taking them on in public and letting them give themselves a black eye. Ballsy.

More than likely, Steve see's Apple as his shot at immortality. He is a Buddhist and anyone can figure out what he's doing. If he could find a way to inject a portion of his soul into every product that is made, he'd do it.

This isn't Buddhism, it's Harry Potter and what Voldemort did to make himself immortal!! You should read up on your religions before you make strange comments like this...

I think overall Apple is right and protecting the experience of the iPhone. Maybe this isn't the best way to go about it, but it's all they've got at the moment...

People who want to develop without these restrictions develop for something else... I'm sure if porn companies wanted to they could get their videos working on the iPhone without flash... BBC iPlayer managed it...

i think a lot of people are too. but we should be given our own choice to decide what we want to do.

Hmmm, my reaction to this: nobody took away your choice in the first place. It's not like you commissioned Steve Jobs to create all these things for you. Don't use apple stuff if you don't want to or make your own app store if you want one, and software platform etc. Just because a company makes something, they are under no obligation to make it something that all people want and like (just look at Microsoft). Why should apple or any company be beholden to some else's idea of likes, dislikes (unless it is somehow harmful to the public). Companies like apple are profit making entities not public service utilities. In a place like China, the line between the two is blurred. The real difference is here in the USA we have the freedom to think and speak critically about this.

Gizmodo & co - what gives them the license for being so rude in every communication? The attitude alone warrants them getting shafted.

Awful, awful "article".

Still, Jobs' replies are pretty pathetic too. Freedom from porn? What a joke. Way to completely fail to understand what freedom means. Maybe I should move to China so I can get freedom from porn, foreign news, and government opposition! I love how he speaks like porn, information theft, and high battery drain apps are only associated with the "PC", LOL!

Is this guy turning senile or does he just get more and more out of touch with the world with each passing day?

I think Jobs makes an excellent point. Apple is developing a specific product. Why should it be every kind of revolutionary that folks desire? They have to stay true to what the aim of Apple computer is, and if somebody wants different no doubt they can find that in somebody else's product.

Gawker's trying to pick at the fresh, sensitive scar left by their recent Gizmodo scoop and leverage it into more "Us vs Apple" posts. Get over yourself, Tate.
