...So Apple isn’t really “protecting” anyone from porn while keeping it out of the App Store.

True, but they're refusing to profit directly from it by foregoing their 30% share of app store sales. That's a commendable message to broadcast - particularly in the face of innumerable "business experts" yammering that the only function of any company is to make money (implicitly ASAP and by any means whatsoever).

Which brings us to another irony: the parental controls don’t include any options to filter web content, just turning Safari off completely. You can configure router filters on your home network, but that doesn’t help when the device leaves it or uses 3G. Yes, filters have their problems—i.e. lots of false negatives and false positives—but I’m sure they’re comforting to parents and perhaps better than nothing. So Apple isn’t really “protecting” anyone from porn while keeping it out of the App Store.

True with that but apple isn't selling you access or apps to access porn. They are blocking access in their app store. What you do with the browser is on you. Apple isn't getting a cut of profit from that. VS if they sold porn items in the app store they would

It's his company.. he can do what he wants with it. He doesn't owe anybody anything. Like he points out, people aren't forced to develop for the platform. Apple makes a product, and consumers buy it. Developers and content publishers are going to go where the people are. Jobs has every right to implement the rules and restrictions that he does - if you want to get mad at anyone, get mad at the folks that buy their products, better yet, don't buy an iPad, and stop complaining about it.

By 'freedom' Jobs means 'restriction'. The guy is sounding more and more like a modern age fascist.

He leads singularly.
He believes his values and belief system are the only ones that are right.
He wages war on opposing technology to his values, shutting them out instead of competing side by side.

Freedom to write what ever, which ever way: Windows Mobile

A few years ago, I wrote some programs for a Compaq IPaq, running WinCE 3, aka PocketPC 2002.
I had complete freedom about what I wanted to write and how I wanted to write it. I landed up using Microsoft's free 'Embedded VB' compiler.
Once I was done with it, I decided to give the app away for free, but there was no place to publish it, other than setting up my own web page for that. Needless to say: The app was never used by anybody but myself - but such is freedom.
I rather write programs for an iP[a,o]d, using Apple's free tools, and later have the means to give them away or sell them, in such a way, that people can actually find my app.

I show my ipad/iphone to people that are curious all the time & I also like porn

I don't DL any apps that have anything really objectionable on them ... just in case.

If i want to see porn, I can navigate to a website or load up a protected directory in goodreader w/mpgs or something.

I am in the camp of people should buy what they want and view what they want on any device, but the various iDevices don't block porn, they just can't grab any from the app store.

***is that really a bad thing?***

I don't want anyone getting over excited in an airplane seat next to me or something just because "there's an app for that".

Find the way to watch the content you want on the device you bought (it is not that hard). If you want a porn store, I guess go elsewhere...and I am not going to say android, because while quietly socially accepted, no one wants to be marked as a smut peddler and eventually they would also have their limits.

sidenote: you may want to hide your sticky device from the rest of the world and your mom. :p

with love (heh)

Porn free Apple!

Porn free Apple!

If you want porn and desperate about it, there are plenty of places you can go! ...as if porn isn't enough in our society!

Forget about porn apps, I can't even stand the word porn associated with Apple...even if I wouldn't buy porn apps, it is sick and makes me vomit if Apple has porn apps in App Store.

What like DVD players and camcorders?

As I said in my post it's about the image the device has. DVD players do not have a porn image. On top of that I don't sit in my office with a DVD player ever nor do I sit in an airport with a DVD player. But sitting in a airport lounge where I might run into tons of colleagues with a device that has a porn image would be akward. Note that I don't care about porn or no porn. It's all a thing of perception and image. Sad but true. And a company can not risk to get a negative image in their market.

Aside of that apple does not block porn. You still can get there through safari.
Apple just chooses not to actively support porn through the app store and profit from porn. IMHO this is a good move for a company like apple.

Ryan Tate seems like a real twit. The fact that Jobs even engaged in an exchange with him is...interesting.

Jobs eventually calls him out for being a slug at the end of the exchange. The only question I have is why Ryan posted the exchange? It makes him look terrible.

Apple is under no obligation to allow pornographic apps in it's store. Period.

That maybe but "Freedom from porn" speak is pretty Orwellian. Remember that little ad from 1984? Jobs apparently doesn't.

I am starting to find these pointless arguments of "your device doesn't have/do this, therefore you are evil" rather idiotic.

I'll normally agree if something which used to be present and is still useful is taken away (like firewire on the macbook )

But really whilst we have idiots demanding things that either don't currently exist, or other platforms/device provide I want to chip in with my needs that apple as a company must make for ME AND ME ALONE.

I want an iPhone with a quad core i7 processor, a terrabyte of storage, free access to everything in the app store and iTunes, it has to have a holographic HD display, free porn for life, a 500 megapixel camera, front and back, oh and play flash content.

Also a matte 13" multitouch macbook quad core, with FW 3200, SSD drive, esata, expresscard, built in 3G thingimebob with no network fees.

Don't get me started on what I want in a new MacPro, and what I demand from os 10.7

:D

But living in the real world I know, much to my bitter disappointment, that apple as a company don't made hardware/software solely for my use, that's why like many people I can be annoyed when they release something that doesn't meet my expectations of what I'd like it to be or do, but if I was so pissed about it I always have the choice to buy something else, or wait and hope that the next revision is more to my liking

True. All I am saying is, if the App Store became another outlet for porn, parents wouldn't buy the iPad for their kids. As I stated in that post, today parents want the responsibility of controlling what their kids do and see shifted to the companies. They don't want to have that responsibility because it would mean saying no to their precious kid, and we can't have that can we?

I agree that many parents often abdicate their parental duties in favor of asking others to build in safeguards that they are too lazy to provide on their own.

But iTunes already has parental controls built-in. Safari does not. And neither do most other browsers. The lack of internet security hasn't made a dent in the sale of Macbooks, net books or PCs in general. So I don't see your point as having validity when it comes to iPad sales.

And maybe it's just me, but I am a parent of three and given the choice of buying my kids a new Macbook with all features or an iPad with limited computing features, for roughly the same price.....the iPad isn't even in the running. In fact, it needs a "real Mac" to even be used.

The way is freedom (like in the Mac), not control, restriction and cershorship (like on the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad).

No it isn't. You should actually read Orwell and quit parroting others, and quit with your lame associations and innuendo.

Apple is applying various of its principles and standards to its business operations. If this is a foreign concept to you, that's YOUR problem, not Apple's.

Well fine then let's open the flood gates. Lets allow KKK apps and Homophobic Apps and Nazi Apps then. Because then that would be true freedom? Right? Wrong.

Allow porn into the app store as a basis of "Freedom" Which no on really has it's more like Freedom with restrictions but never the less. Allowing porn into the store would end up causing a Fustercluck because then Racists would claim it was their "Freedom" to have apps in the store as well. You can't have this so called "freedom" for one questionable category and not have it for all of them. So tell me then if the app store was filled with Porn,KKK,Nazi,Apps about cross burnings, etc how well would the app store be and how well would the iPhone sell?

Let android have that s**t

Well I have read the book and Jobs is double speaking. Stop defending him blindly.

I never said what Apple should or should not allow in their store. I just said the stop calling this censorship "Freedom". It's not. It's censorship. The opposite of freedom. Double speak.

Erm, did you miss the parental controls in the system preferences, there's a plethora of options in there that can restrict what/when and how someone can use the computer.

...

Is this guy turning senile or does he just get more and more out of touch with the world with each passing day?

'this guy' has done it all (unlike you, I am sure).

then, 'this guy' feels like he owes not-one any thing (including you and many others such as yourself, I am sure).

then, 'this guy' is back from the brink of death (unlike you, I am sure), and he pleases himself in doing things for which others (much as yourself) fault him and brand as 'senile'

'this guy' does not give a hoop about just about any thing... and it shows. Great for him. He deserves to do so (unlike you, I am sure).

The way is freedom (like in the Mac), not control, restriction and cershorship (like on the iPhone, iPod touch or iPad).

Unlimited freedom without control and standards is anarchy which is NO freedom. It's actually slavery to the mobs with the biggest clubs. Sounds like you didn't pay much attention in school.

Apple has every right to choose not to hose porn in their store. No one complains when Blockbuster or Wal-Mart enforces a similar policy. Apple does nothing to BLOCK porn- they just won't put it in the store, it is freely on the Internet. What's the issue?

From a corporate image perspective, selling porn in your store is a disaster. And Jobs has solid personal reasons not to on top of it.

Well I have read the book and Jobs is double speaking. Stop defending him blindly.

I think comparing Steve Jobs to Big Brother is a little premature at the moment, once he sticks your head in a box with hungry rats, that'll be the time to move solely to windows :p

Branding

I think this whole Flash debate comes down to an odd convergence. I don't think that Apple wants to control user experience. They realize that their brand extends into user experence. So, their branding must exert some control over how the user experience works on their hardware, over time.

I'm not saying it's right or wrong, but that is where the uncomfortable overlap occurs. To Apple, they are not controlling user experience, they are branding their products, and confirming their product differentiation.

Where does branding end, and customer choice begin? We also have to be aware that, without a heavily branded operating system/platform, Apple slightly sinks into that commodity world, where any product is simply a collection of assembled parts. Apple wants to prove that wrong, but the branding ironically includes how WE use their products.

We are a part of the Apple brand while using their products. Maybe that's why most are elated, and some are wary!
