Gawker's trying to pick at the fresh, sensitive scar left by their recent Gizmodo scoop and leverage it into more "Us vs Apple" posts. Get over yourself, Tate.

Get real....Gizmodo has more of a pro-Apple stance than all of these forums combined.

Apple is right or may I say SJ is right. Nobody is pointing a gun to anyone and forcing you to buy an iPad, if you don't like it you don't need to buy it. I don't give a **** about this battle, I own an iMac, and iPod touch, 2 nanos, two g4 laptops and now my iPad 3G and I love each one a lot. This devices are the best devices out there. Period.

Gizmodo & co - what gives them the license for being so rude in every communication? The attitude alone warrants them getting shafted.

This. It's the 'Gawker attitude' that rubbed me the wrong way during the iPhone affair. I couldn't care less if the iPhone leaks, but to pursue it in such a craven and illegal manner as if Gawker were invincible was ridiculous. Then, in a sorry attempt to cover their own ass they drug Grey Powell's name through the mud. I hope Chen gets charged and Gawker sued, if for no other reason than karmic ones.

As for the charges of restrictions vs freedom on the iDevices: I have no problem with Apple restricting its App Store, because on the flip side they are one of the strongest corporate supporters of open Web standards and their included web browser is still the market leader in features and responsiveness. If you own an iDevice and want content that isn't available on the App Store, all you have to do is open the fantastic browser and the web is at your fingertips.

Something I often notice when action movies are shown on US television. They'll leave the point-blank headshot in, but will edit out the word **** (wow, I can't even put the incorrect spelling of a word in here, mental.) I live in the UK now. There are naked boobs in the newspaper. It's great.

And yet the UK regulates and censors your porn. Not so great.

Hmmm, my reaction to this: nobody took away your choice in the first place. It's not like you commissioned Steve Jobs to create all these things for you. Don't use apple stuff if you don't want to or make your own app store if you want one, and software platform etc. Just because a company makes something, they are under no obligation to make it something that all people want and like. Why should apple or any company be beholden to some else's idea of likes, dislikes (unless it is somehow harmful to the public). Companies like apple are profit making entities not public service utilities.

Spot on! The freedom is yours all along. If you ask an Apple employee at the store "Hey, before I buy this...can I get porn apps" and the answer is "no", then you have the choice to talk with your dollars and purchase something different. Apple is under no obligation to allow pornographic apps in it's store. Period.

I work for a wireless company that sells Android (which I do love by the way), and I can't tell you how many people come in with jacked up handsets and sure enough, they have about 15 porn apps on their handset. I mean seriously, if that's your thing, cool. But Apple knows the dangers and the pitfalls of allowing that crap and they can choose to say "Hey, not on our product" if they so desire. It's in the same context as some racist saying "It's not fair that there isn't a white power app, they are infringing on my freedom!!!" Most ridiculous and stupid argument in the history of arguing. BUY SOMETHING ELSE. Otherwise, you used your "Freedom of Choice" to hinder your own app buying possibilities. Blame yourself.

It's truly a sad age we live in. People are so brainwashed that they rather have other people make decisions for them instead of thinking for themselves. If you want to go the no porn route, then don't look at porn and monitor your children. Don't let companies say what you can and cannot do with a product you purchased.

It's absolutely amazing to me that anyone can come to this, and similar, conclusions based on Apple's actions and approach. It's not like ANYONE, users or developers, has to choose Apple. Apple is not dominant in anything but MP3 players. Then how can Apple be FORCING anything???? They, more than any other CE manufacturer are actually offering consumers, and developers, a choice - i.e. something different. If you don't like it there are plenty of other choices on the same, basic, level. The for more interesting result of Apples approach is that they are NOT failing. You, and other that have this view of 'freedom of choice' should actually think about this instead of such knee-jerk reactions. The corresponding interesting question is why are people flocking to Apple's offering? Maybe they like having a different choice for a change?

DVD players and camcorders don't give you direct access to porn. Just can't turn them on, hit a few buttons and voila, you see a naked woman. While the porn industry did help in the format wars( Beta vs VHS, etc), it isn't easy for a kid to go look at porn simply by having a dvd player and camcorder.

The iPad is easy, so controlling if it has porn apps is necessary if Apple wants parents to buy their kids iPads because parents today expect the companies and TV to be responsible for controlling what kids see/watch/do then themselves......

Porn hasn't stopped anyone from using the Internet.

They may be Pro-Apple, but they are certainly doing a pretty good job of pissing off Apple. They thought they were not being treated fairly by Apple before this mess, what do you think their treatment will be after publishing the iPhone prototype and this crap?

Gawker as a whole has no ethics in reporting. Another site of theirs, Jalopnik has broken embargo's tons of times just to be the first to have released the info on the car.

By 'freedom' Jobs means 'restriction'. The guy is sounding more and more like a modern age fascist.

He leads singularly.
He believes his values and belief system are the only ones that are right.
He wages war on opposing technology to his values, shutting them out instead of competing side by side.

No. He's a libertarian. Like an artist, he believes in the right to produce the product that matches his vision. As he aptly points out, if you don't like his vision, there are plenty of alternatives.

Your argument is akin to believing da Vinci should have been forced to include a banner ad for cheetos in the mona lisa since cheetos are so popular.

In the US we have freedom make products and to buy products that work for us.

With that said Steve Jobs and apple have the right to design the product the way they choose to which means they have a right to Omit features and add features as they choose.

Now whoever doesn't like this has the freedom to choose not to buy it. So protest, cry, pull your hairout but it's not going to change Apple's stance on porn, flash etc. But hey you have the freedom to beat a horse dead also :p

But just know that apple isn't going to budge on this :D And I'm glad they wont.

Porn hasn't stopped anyone from using the Internet.

True. All I am saying is, if the App Store became another outlet for porn, parents wouldn't buy the iPad for their kids. As I stated in that post, today parents want the responsibility of controlling what their kids do and see shifted to the companies. They don't want to have that responsibility because it would mean saying no to their precious kid, and we can't have that can we?

What part of "you have a choice" don't people understand?

If you don't like the Apple way, don't buy their products. Bottom line and end of story.

Vote with your wallet, people.

(Haven’t read the whole thread, so forgive me if I repeat others)

I agree that Tate is all over the place and doesn’t make many good points. But I have to agree with him that “Freedom from porn” is pretty Orwellian. It’s not like people who don’t want to see porn would feel shackled by its presence on the App store, especially if it were cordoned off.

An early poster had a good point here that if Apple were to let porn in, there’d be a whole slippery-slope issue on where to draw the line for “acceptable porn”. And while I disagree with it, I can understand and accept the business reasons for turning down porn-centric apps. Especially since iPhone OS users can access plenty of porn via Safari (and really, there probably aren’t that many porn-consumption innovations that need a native interface).

Which brings us to another irony: the parental controls don’t include any options to filter web content, just turning Safari off completely. You can configure router filters on your home network, but that doesn’t help when the device leaves it or uses 3G. Yes, filters have their problems—i.e. lots of false negatives and false positives—but I’m sure they’re comforting to parents and perhaps better than nothing. So Apple isn’t really “protecting” anyone from porn while keeping it out of the App Store.

I like this new Steve Jobs.

Since Steve comeback from his illness hes like

"Come on Then!"
/smashes Beer Bottle

"Il Take yers all on <hick>

You'd rather have it overrun with 500 flashlight and 1,000 fart apps?

Well let's go there. Since the android market has no approval process at all then anyone can create something that has malware and viruses right?

This has never happened in the history of the App store on the iphone. So while a walled garden may suck for gadget geeks. The average consumer doesn't want to have to worry about someone trying to do something malicious to their device.

So if you don't like the iphone get rid of it and find something that works for you. Because while you may be discontented with it. The average consumer is not and i will say this once again because people here on MR don't get it. Companies like apple do not make products that appeal just ONLY to GEEKS. Because that is a small segment.

They make products that have wide Appeal. So buy an android if that has what you want. But apple is not going to ever allow porn on the app store.

Exactly-- Guess what people Apple is in business to make money and they do that well, so something must be working. They drive change and you can either go with them or die, reminds me of the uproar when they stopped included disk drives

This isn't Buddhism, it's Harry Potter and what Voldemort did to make himself immortal!! You should read up on your religions before you make strange comments like this...

Ah my young padowan, it is YOU who does not understand Buddhism to make such an uninformed analogy. Do you not understand the basic tenants of Karma and Rebirth?

I suggest you graduate from children's books and try something a tad bit more challenging.

Steve Jobs has every right to define and try to control the fate of his company's brand. As others have pointed out, porn could rapidly become very popular on the iPhone OS platform if allowed into the app store. Apple has never tried to control access to porn on macs. I doubt that they care who uses porn or whatever on their macs (or iPhones outside of the context of the app store). Nobody tracks the fact that people are using their macs to view porn. However, the popularity and availability of highly popular porn apps would be there for all the world to see. This on highly portable devices that Apple wants to be family and school friendly. Porn on the Android platform is not strongly linked to a single company. Porn on an iPhone OS-based device would be linked to Apple. Imagine the outcry from assorted groups and some media outlets as the porn keeps pushing the envelope. Apple will never risk their brand's reputation to satisfy some notion of a right to freedom.
This is not about freedom in the absolute sense. It's about choice. Apple presents one choice. It's not the only choice.

What does he think he will acomplish by bashing apple like that.come on people won't stop buying there stuff I even buy all the stuff and I'm aware of these restrictions (the regular consumer doesn't care about this).like Steve said u don't have to develop for this platform, and no one is holding a gun to your head...ect. The regular consumer is not aware and could care less, while the people who do know and care either go somewhere els for our needs, jailbreak or just deal. GOSH this guy is dumb
