That maybe but "Freedom from porn" speak is pretty Orwellian. Remember that little ad from 1984? Jobs apparently doesn't.

Not to sound like a prude, but some folks might prefer that.

Steve's comment to Ryan about only being able to understand this when you have kids is spot on. Kids minds are like sponges. They take in everything they see and try to rationalize it into their evolving world-model.

A lot of contemporary porn really shouldn't be rationalized. We'll leave it at that, shall we?

I think comparing Steve Jobs to Big Brother is a little premature at the moment, once he sticks your head in a box with hungry rats, that'll be the time to move solely to windows :p

Comparing Jobs to Big Brother is just as valid as comparing IBM to Big Brother was. I don't remember IBM placing bucket with hungry rats on any stomachs, do you?

I said before, I say again. Some folks might prefer that, but it's not freaking freedom. And this "why doesn't anyone think of the children" nonsense is getting really tired. Children are not as fragile as many people seem to believe. What they need is explanations that help them to understand the world, not over protection from the world.

Ryan Tate is 100% wrong and has a major attitude problem to boot. Steve Jobs is 100% right. I fully stand behind Steve Jobs. And expanding upon what Steve Jobs said to him, let's see Ryan try to change the world the way that Steve Jobs has changed the world many times over. Ryan Tate is a moron with a mouth.

No, emphatically no! There is absolutely no reason Apple should pander to unprincipled fools like you. Go somewhere else for your porn, you idiot.

Tell the rest of the Taliban that we said "Hi!"

Who the hell put you in charge of passing moral judgment on millions of adults who get sexual gratification from pornography? And how dare you call them "unprincipled"?! Is that how you refer to anyone who is not a repressed, evangelical, religious zealot? Keep your bigotry to yourself.

Or are you just scared that, were there an adults-only "porn" section, you would be unable to resist peeking? And then you'd have to lash yourself while chanting.

Jobs can impose his personal beliefs on the platform. But it's to the detriment of the iPad/iPhone. Fast forward a few years: Android based tablets and phones take 90% of the market and with Apple long since abandoning the desktop and Mac, Jobs won't sound so high and mighty.

All the questions that Ryan Tate asked are appropriate. Jobs can micromanage and control his kingdom but looming large in his rear view mirror is Google about to swallow the market that Apple has created. There is no guarantee that Apple will be any more than a bit player here.

i think a lot of people are too. but we should be given our own choice to decide what we want to do.

Hey, you have the choice to decide what to do. Use your safari browser. Have you heard of it?

Why is this so difficult to understand?

Apple does not want p*** in their app store. Yet, you are free to do as you please. Moreover, you and other such as yourself can get a google phone or any other phone for that matter, and exercise your freedom... Man, this argument about p*** are so insane...

I have small kids, niece, nephew, parents, in-laws... they all use iphone + other apple products. I am glad that I do not have to explain what not to do to any of them! There is freedom to do the p*** that you and so many crave for. Go and indulge yourself... goodness...

the fact is that p*** existed before the iphone and ipad. Did you and other lovers of p*** had the freedom that you so much crave now? What is the difference?

i think a lot of people are too. but we should be given our own choice to decide what we want to do.

Are you serious? This is a consumer product. A computer platform. Not some right put forth in the constitution of
the U.S. that gives all Americans the right to choose porn on their mobile device.

Intersetngly enough, I am starting to feel :apple:Apple is starting to grow into a corporate 'Big Brother.' Presumably, it's always their way; never mine nor yours.

Can you dictate to any company how to do their buisness? No you can't. Because if you could you wouldnt be on this forum. you would be sitting around a table in a boardroom

I Don't see microsoft, ibm, walmart,Bank of america letting customers tell them what products they should have etc.

Also Mac rumors users have a tendency to think that every single user of apple products are geeks like like them. Not every customer is like us but yet some of us don't get that.

The average consumer doesn't give a damn about what we talk about on this board. They want something that's simple and works. If you don't go find something that does. Because no one is forcing you to use apple products but yourself.

Its somewhat ironic to me that Jobs' radical-left philosophies would create a computing platform that is so openly embraced by right-wing anti-porn crusaders.

Awesome powder on the slopes of hell I hear......

Comparing Jobs to Big Brother is just as valid as comparing IBM to Big Brother was. I don't remember IBM placing bucket with hungry rats on any stomachs, do you?

But at least when the 1984 advert aired IBM pretty much were the de-facto PC company, and there was little choice but to go through them if you needed a computer. But as of today there is choice, symbian, WinMo, Blackberry, Android.

But silly analogies aside, that advert was just a clever piece of marketing, something which love or loathe apple as a company, they do that with more panache than most.

Lol

Ryan Tate let that name be forever synonomis with ignorance and patheticness. Why don't you do something for the world before you start whining like a little child.

Seriously the open system complaint is really old

I wear boxers because they are open, no one is forcing me to buy butt huggers, which are not open, in fact they are extremely tight and restrictive. That being said, I am not standing on the corner bitching about how butt huggers are tight and restrictive because I have a choice to buy boxers. Its not like Apple is a government entity that is forcing everyone to buy their products. Apple offers up its products, you either like them or you don't. I may not like butt huggers but I sure do like Apple products. The open system debate is getting old and tired, what a bunch of cry babies. Go buy something else! Quick run out and get your Droid Pad... oh wait, it's not out yet... Yeah thats right we have to wait for apple to make everything first, then rip them off and bitch about what their innovative products don't do and act like the man is holding us down... yeah that makes sense...?

Why is SJ up at 2 AM and responding to emails? At least it's not a work night. Maybe he's partying and high on LSD. :)

so disrespectful...

i work late at night by choice, and I certainly do not go parhying or do LSD.

as per your comments, you obviously stay late at night when partying and high on LSD?

Jobs ends with:
By the way, what have you done that's so great? Do you create anything, or just criticize others work and belittle their motivations?

What has Jobs ever done that's so great? Did he create anything, or just promote and sell others work and ignore their motivations?

We need people like Jobs who see a good invention when it happens and can sell it to a stubborn public. But we also need critics who stop maniacs when they try to control the world.

However, innovators and inventors are a different class of people. We really need innovators and inventors. But people like Jobs and that blogger? Not so much.

i think a lot of people are too. but we should be given our own choice to decide what we want to do.

You do get a choice. The choice it to watch it somewhere else.

I think the only reason the app system does not have porn is because apple is the one selling it and getting their 30%. If you could get apps without going through itunes and directly downloading from different websites then porn would be on the ipad.

They don't want to force their employees to review porn apps and they do not want to make money off porn.

How fun would that job be? :(... "Hey I got this 2 chicks 1 cup app, who wants to review it?" "give it to the porn app review guy"

Erm, did you miss the parental controls in the system preferences, there's a plethora of options in there that can restrict what/when and how someone can use the computer.

You know what? I stand corrected, Mac's DO come with parental controls over the browser. So do some PC's for that matter.

But so does the iPad. Its just unfortunate that the parental control you have for the iPad is to disable it. Unlike the app store, where you have much more flexibility.

Ryan Tate is an idiot

He doesn't know anything, he just likes to stir up problems and mess with people.

I have to say that I respect Jobs for being one of the few CEOs who takes the time to reply to his e-mails. Even though I don't agree with him, he's willing to take the time to defend what Apple does.
Tate, on the other hand, didn't sound very brilliant. Granted, he qualifies that he's been drinking, but that's not a good excuse to cuss out the person you're writing (unless you know the person really well) or to overstate your case. Perhaps I'm wrong, but I seriously doubt that Tate has an actual journalism degree. If he does, his j-school should be feeling very ashamed for its alumnus.

I haven't used an iPad, so I'm unsure of what parental controls are including in it's browser.

But I guess that one problem with parental controls on computers as a whole is that often children are more tech savvy than their parents.

I've had many a friend who have been taught how to use computers by their children, so the easier it is for them to control what their children can and cannot do on computers the better.
