I have small kids, niece, nephew, parents, in-laws... they all use iphone + other apple products. I am glad that I do not have to explain what not to do to any of them!

Why the h*** would you authorize your small kids to download porn from their iPhones? I'm not a parent, but if I got my kid an iPhone, I'd never lie about their age so that they could access adult content through the App store. You might be unaware of this, but there's porn available all over the Internet through browsers, so you better have that talk you thought you could avoid.

As to your parents and in-laws, they understand the whole concept of sex. They would know what they were about to access based on the warnings about explicit adult content.

It's truly a sad age we live in. People are so brainwashed that they rather have other people make decisions for them instead of thinking for themselves. If you want to go the no porn route, then don't look at porn and monitor your children. Don't let companies say what you can and cannot do with a product you purchased.

Oh PLEASE. The whole "apple doesn't allow porn on the ipad" whine-fest is so quickly getting to be the most annoying rant on this site. First of all, it's just incorrect. You can access porn in Safari or load it onto the ipad yourself, if you want. You can make it your background if that makes you happy. What you can't do is buy porn in the store that apple created, owns, and operates. Guess what - you can't buy porn in best buy, either. I guess that means best buy is brainwashing you and preventing you from making choices for yourself?

Jobs can impose his personal beliefs on the platform. But it's to the detriment of the iPad/iPhone. Fast forward a few years: Android based tablets and phones take 90% of the market and with Apple long since abandoning the desktop and Mac, Jobs won't sound so high and mighty.

I actually agree with you regarding the market QUANTITY but not for your reasons. The reason is that Apple could care less about market number share. As long as there are enough users to attract developers more doesn't matter. What matters is profit share. Here Apple is already the far dominant player in mobile already outstripping Nokia. Apple is perfectly content with that position and will continue to serve the upper-end market at higher margins. Apple's focus on user experience over feature set (which includes exclusion of Flash and control of the app store) will continue to allow them to by the profit leader no matter what happens with Android. In addition Android profits will be split among many companies making Apple even more dominant.

Conclusion: Apple doesn't care about these arguments because they don't effect their business model!

Open And Dangerous

It's inevitable that some morning we will wake up to this news.

"Millions of Android based smart phones are disabled this morning due to a fast spreading virus...."

I am surprised it hasn't happened already.

I read the whole article. Apple does not have a monopoly on the tablet computing market or the smartphone market either. If they want to impose standards for software publishers who wish to develop for their platform what gives the U.S. government the right to tell them that they can't.

I think that Steve Jobs' prior statement that if you want porn use android speaks for itself.

I wish that the U.S. government would worry about the imbalances in our debt. and consumption based economy rather than what is needed to have your app approved for the iPhone OS.

i think a lot of people are too. but we should be given our own choice to decide what we want to do.

You are. The iPhone and iPad has this thing called Safari on it. You can find some really outrageous stuff on the web, if you want, and some of it's in HTML5! I mean, really, what a tempest in a teapot. Boobie apps? Seriously? This is "freedom."

If Congress passes a law to shut down porn on the Internet, I'd be against. But seriously, Boobie apps?

By 'freedom' Jobs means 'restriction'. The guy is sounding more and more like a modern age fascist.

How are you fascist if you want your company to do things a certain way, and not want other methods practiced?

He's not making the world act the way he does. He does what he wants, for his company. Again -- his company.

I honestly don't see how everyone is so annoyed about this whole control thing. OK, fine, I could see it, if every time I pulled up the internet, I'd have to only browse pages Apple wants me to. That's not true.

So -- based on your position, does this mean I must convert all of my code I've written for my research from C++ to C#, Fortran, etc.? So that everyone may use it (if they don't like or use C++)? No. I could care less -- you want to use my style of programming, so be it. If not, who cares? Do it your way --> Apple's position.

Are you serious? This is a consumer product. A computer platform. Not some right put forth in the constitution of
the U.S. that gives all Americans the right to choose porn on their mobile device.

I agree. If I want to find porn, I can browse the internet. If it is a deal breaker and I cannot find porn without an app, I won't buy an Ipad. I am waiting to buy an iphone. I want one because it will offer me a seamless experience. I accept the limitations, (not that I notice many!), in exchange for a secure non buggy experience. No one is making me buy Apple products. Steve Jobs isn't a god but he is CEO of Apple. If he takes the company down the wrong route, it goes under or changes direction. Easy, welcome to capitalism. If you want to punish SJ or Apple, don't buy their products.

Apple are a company who want to make money. They also want to produce popular, design conscious and easy to use products. They decide what market they are aiming for and then go for it. One of the major potential markets that the Ipad would be good for is education. Schools may be using them as replacement for books. No education authority is going to buy a product which makes it easy to get porn. Yes any student can browse the internet for porn but unless they hack the ipad, they won't be able to use an app that Apple have sold to the school authorities. Any student who hacks an issued Ipad to load unofficial apps will automatically be in trouble. To use an English phrase, it will be an easy nick, clear cut and against all the rules.

i agree. apple isn't disabling porn access from you,
they're just not providing it for you.

What has Jobs ever done that's so great? Did he create anything, or just promote and sell others work and ignore their motivations?

Wow... talk about ignorant. You have absolutely no business being involved in this discussion.

If my jaw could stretch that far, it would literally be on the floor that somebody on an Apple forum could be so ignorant to Steve Jobs role in the company.

Why so angry Ryan?

Ryan zero,
Steve won.

Dude, first off, if you want to win an argument or at least appear to be intelligent, don't start dropping f-bombs. It makes you look like a child. Next, if you don't like Steve is doing, make your own device. Make it open where you don't collect revenue. Great business model, hope it works out for you. Lastly you want porn, use ANY browser you want. Do you really need an app for that? God, you're stupid, rude and lazy. That's one way to go through life son....

K

Steve sticking to his guns...and morals

oh yea def! which is why apple must pre-approve every app. i totally agree with that, but the option should still be there even for a porn/adult reading section if they so choose.
I'm sorry, but I totally disagree. If you want to look at porn, subscribe to Playboy, or use your browser. There is absolutely no need for Apple to allow Porn apps in their store. A company's image does still exist in today's world, and Apple allowing porn Apps is just plain distasteful and sleezy. You can talk about adding parental controls restricting searches within iTunes, but kids would stumble upon it elsewhere. You argue the option should exist for those users that would choose to view it. So, basically because people want it, Steve and Apple should make it? Um...no. It's not your company. Deal with it. This country isn't so free yet you can demand what other corporations can do. This is just like Adobe crying about Flash not being allowed on a product that isn't even theirs. Tough luck. Make your own company and you can do whatever you wish with it.

While I respect the fact that people want to absorb content in a manner that is easy, Porn has no place in a professional company store like Apple. If you want it in the App store, do you also want a porn magazine rack in every brick & mortar Apple Store? What about Best Buy...do you want to buy porn there?

... But we also need critics who stop maniacs when they try to control the world...

Agreed, absolutely. But that's not how I saw the email exchange.

And who's trying to "control the world"? Sounds like a plot from vintage Bond movie

<strokes long-haired white cat and spins around in high-backed black leather chair> :)

But there's a difference, Apple say no to Adobe, only to punish (yes punish) the users of their hardware. This is my first Mac and I've been a Windows user the whole time. The hardware inside this MacBook is out of date compared to laptops running Windows. Apple slaps a premium price on hardware and limits what it's OS can run on. Microsoft customise their software to work on any hardware...

Microsoft make one mistake and the media are all over it, Apple jabbing them, even the price of their OS is laughed at... Microsoft constantly bring out updates, the OS isn't open source, Mac is based off Linux/Unix afaik (guessing because of terminal) so most of it's system has been coded and created by the users? (I am most likely wrong here sorry)

Apple make a big step and say no way to Adobe and all you get is 1 news paragraph saying what's happened. Microsoft make 1 mistake it's all over the news, people moaning, sarcasm thrown at them etc...

Apple don't care, their systems are for rich people anyway.

Any company that says I can't use flash is out of order and don't deserve any of my hard earned cash. I was going to buy an iPad until I read about it... What if I ran my website on Flash?

This and your signature made me laugh.

Awful, awful "article".

Still, Jobs' replies are pretty pathetic too. Freedom from porn? What a joke. Way to completely fail to understand what freedom means. Maybe I should move to China so I can get freedom from porn, foreign news, and government opposition! I love how he speaks like porn, information theft, and high battery drain apps are only associated with the "PC", LOL!

Is this guy turning senile or does he just get more and more out of touch with the world with each passing day?

I wonder if Steve Jobs was 20 now what he would think of Apple, not the same jobs that was at the start of Apple.

Ryan Tate sounds like a 12 year old in his emails to a world-famous CEO.

This.

You don't have to use Apple products, you don't have to buy them. You don't even have to work for a company that requires you to deal with them.

To quote Devo: Freedom of choice / is what you got / Freedom from choice / is what you want

By 'freedom' Jobs means 'restriction'. The guy is sounding more and more like a modern age fascist.

He leads singularly.
He believes his values and belief system are the only ones that are right.
He wages war on opposing technology to his values, shutting them out instead of competing side by side.

Uh, so? Of course he thinks only his values and such are the only ones that are right, that's why they are HIS views... If he thought so and so's views were also correct, he would adopt those, and they would be his also...

how many parents do you think would be complaining if there were porn apps?
I mean, if their children downloaded a porn application from the app store?
going to a porn website is one thing. they're out there, on the internet. it's the internet, nobody has control over it. but as an app, they would be able to say that it is a direct feature of the phone. provided by the phone's creating company.

Freedom from porn...

Well Apples hefty parental controls are one of the reasons I am a loyal customer for apple.

We dont have computers in our kids rooms, so we can supervise what they are doing, or TVs. My youngest (7 almost 8) had a friend over who brought her laptop (we didnt know she had it) and they were in her room watching youtube videos. My daughter brought me the laptop and asked me why this woman was taking her clothes off! (they had clicked on a link in comments on one of the vidoes and gotten into the seedier side of the internet). Sheesh.

Between that and TV (which is also a NO-NO in the kids rooms) its getting harder to let kids be innocent until after puberty.

Didnt take the laptop away, but suggested they not click on links in comments and come in the family room to play on the computer so we could be around to answer questions.

I would suggest OpenDNS.com. They have an instructional video to show how you can block porn and such via using their DNS.

I don't understand the big deal here. Apple has every right to enforce what is sold in their app store. It's THEIRS. You don't like the selection, go somewhere else. That's how the market works.

But Apple isn't shutting off the internet from the ipad/iphone. So if you want to see people having sex, then open up Safari and knock yourselves out.

I saw that the reason he sent the email was because he got upset after watching the ending of the iPad commercial and thought they were censoring porn or something, but I looked over it and I'm not even sure what was it that he got so upset about. Am I missing something?

You are right, this has been Apple's business model for computers. The iPad starts at $499. There are iPhones available for $99. With mobile seemingly having less dollar value Apple will still be part of the race to the bottom in hardware. Steve is trying to control and have a piece of app sales. If his market share is tiny Apple won't be able to make the previous profits. This is the risk of his turning Apple into a glorified Nokia/Sony.

There is the possibility of Apple losing big in mobile in the long run and Apple having a repeat of the 1990s. It sounds crazy now but it seemed crazy during the heyday of the Apple II as well.
