It is certain that your personal bank still runs part of its software on as400 workstations programmed with COBOL. At all of the banks and many other companies I consulted this was the case. THAT should be of concern to you.
A manufacturer running older OS or other software versions is quite normal and of no concern at all.
I have received quite a few comments, but I would like to respond to your and hope to cover all of the comments I have received. I actually built an ATM system for a grocery chain in the 80s using IBM Series/1s. I coded on the system 36/38/400, but I used RPG and not Cobol. I am very familiar with the issue facing banks.
I have several concerns here that I will try to elaborate better.
1. In general, most business delay upgrading until the last possible moment and often wait even after that to upgrade. Based on what I have seen instead of saving money, there are a ton of documents showing how this actually cost money especially due to security risk.
2. I consider it ironic, to say the least, that Apple products are being built by machines driven by Microsoft. I would have expected something else, like IBM or Oracle or something. But I would consider it ironic to find Apple devices be built by machines running or being driven by ChromeOS.
3. OS X is not designed to be a manufacturing OS driving a ton of robots. I totally get that and I did not expect to find factory workers behind a MacPro or anything, but I did expect that Apple had more modern devices to build their modern devices. I get that a lot is done manually and that is why they do it in China where the labor is significantly cheaper. However, if they had more modern technology, maybe they could have less Chinese laborer working such long hours. And maybe that would allow them to bring some of the work back to the US or even to Europe so that you can build closer to where it is being sold and minimize the transportation costs.
Having said all this, I am concerned that the banks are neglecting their responsibilities. I actually go into banks and do not use ATMs if I can help it (I doubt I use an ATM more than once a quarter and would really eliminate it altogether if I could). However, I am still not at the stuff it in the bed mattress phase.
