On schematic camera lense only appears to protrude on the larger device. Lense is flush with backplate on 4.7" device.

Although images look suspicious at best, I would actually welcome protruding camera lens, especially the one Apple patented with interchangeable lens mount.
Image
Sure it may not look snazzy, but it really isn't that bad on iPod touch and interchangeable lens would open up the market for much more elegantly designed lenses.

Please don't do it Apple. I use the iphone camera for the odd pictures with friends. For full on photographing I have a DSLR and plenty of lens. People who can afford a iphone can afford a DSLR.

Why not? It won't hurt anyone.

I hope the camera doesn't protrude from the case. For some reason it really bugs me on the iPod.

Likewise. I don't have an iPod but what happens when you place the phone down on a flat surface and try to use it? Won't it rock across the camera and the other far corner?

I recall being frustrated with the curvature of my 3GS when needing to use it this way and I really hope they don't reintroduce this problem.

I totally get that and I did not expect to find factory workers behind a MacPro or anything, but I did expect that Apple had more modern devices to build their modern devices.

But it's not Apple who assembles the iPhones, it's Foxconn – a different company building a lot of stuff for a lot of clients including Apple.

----------

I also hope that the camera doesn't protrude from the device. I'm guessing it's much more prone to getting damaged.

Not more prone than any other iDevice actually. Ugly or not is a matter of taste, but I want to say iPod Touch looks and feels a way better in real life than on pictures.

Just measure the connector with a ruler...

Looks legit to me.
Just measure the Lightning connector and audio jack with a ruler, and all the dimensions of the phone in that image can be calculated!
Anyone with a ruler and a calculator in hand?

Serious leak if true although it proves nothing as they probably designed and made several prototypes before agreeing on the final design. Having said that I think I'm right in saying that in past few years the first production leaks turned out to be very accurate in the end.

The 'clamping down on security' comment - It's getting old. Last month everyone was singing a different toon.. 'man why haven't we seen Mr. Blurrycam with the 6?' Now, as soon as an image is leaked with some legitimacy it's 'wow, some security' So which is it?

But you do realize those things were written by very different people? Some want to see leaked iPhone ASAP and some want Apple to keep it secure until public release.

Some asking why Apple is so focused on 'thinner and lighter' Why? Because if it was thicker and heavier, everyone would be up in arms on how Apple could release such a device. Com'mon!

I think people mean Apple souldn't be obsessed with 'thinner and lighter' thing. No one asks for thicker and heavier phone. And also Apple shoudn't make something thinner at the expense of other features. Such as when Apple released the latest iPod Touch without an ambient light sensor and then stated it was done because iPod is now so thin the sensor doesn't fit inside.

Quit trying to be the zen master of Apple's design team and supply channel. At the rate were going, there are apparently 200+ people who believe they could be Apples CEO.

Why not? Having your own vision and an articulated opinion on a subject is a good thing. And 'CEO' is not a genetic mutation or something inheritable, it's a position anyone can take with a hard work, good vision and some luck. Just because some guy was selected as CEO it doesn't make all other humans more stupid than he is. And I'm sure there're many smart people here as well as on any other forum.

There's an exemption when CEO is the guy who founded a successfull company, that's another story.

I am a bit disappointed having seen these 'leaks'. My interest went from 100% to near 0% only because of that camera lens. It's the same reason why I am not a fan of the Nokia phones.

Likely legit. What is interesting is that the 5.5 inch phone may be the mid tier (think 6C) phone with the 4.7 inch the higher end phone. It may run the A7 and be aluminum like the iPod touch, and feature gorilla glass and a protruding camera to save money. The 4.7inch may be liquid metal with an A8 and a sapphire display screen. It would be fun to see the reaction.

If you use iPod Touch then you'll see this ring is not a problem at all. And overall iPod Touch is a very nice little machine.

So it lays perfectly flat on a tabletop?

----------

Are those running Windows XP? Better upgrade them.

To what? Windows 8 machines? Blech. If they're not connected to the internet they should be fine as long as they work.

I have no idea if this is real, or not, but if it is, why on earth would someone risk their job in order to leak images to a website? Is it really worth it? I don't understand that.

Perhaps Apple will be retiring the iPod Touch and replacing it with a more value orientated 'iPhone Media Player' of sorts. The lack of stereo speaker grills and true-tone flash may point to this. Not to mention the design cues such as the raised camera taken from the current iPod Touch

I don't know if the CAD diagram is real or not, but here are my observations on the 4.7" model:

Dimensions are 137mm tall, 61mm wide, 7mm thick. Noticeably taller than the 5S which is 123.8mm tall, but not much different otherwise. The additional height is necessary because the Home Button is still present. Thinner side bezels only help so much.

Volume buttons and silent switch are similar in position to those on the 5S. Same with camera assembly and power button.

I'm curious as to the materials that will be used for the front/back panels, and the ring around the sides.

The overall design has clear influence from the 4S, 5C, and iPod Touch. It pushes the limits of thin-ness, but I'm not sure it'll be a revolutionary leap… but as we know nothing about the materials or internals I'm sure there will be surprises this September.

Same here. Protruding lens takes me from "will buy day 1" to "no thanks." I hope you are reading this thread Apple you still have time to redesign.

Please bring back the glass back casing, or at least bring back the black metal from iPhone 5. Who's idiotic idea was Space Gray?

The protruding lense is only on the large model though. The 4.7" iPhone schematic shows a flush camera assembly.
