A questionable report this weekend from 91Mobiles claims that one of Apple's largest distributors in the Asia-Pacific region is preparing to stock new iPhone and iPad models next month, including a supposed "iPhone 14 mini" and a 10th-generation iPad with a 10.2-inch display, but the information is very likely wrong.

The report comes from Evan Blass, who has accurately leaked countless Android smartphones, shared images of the iPhone 12 and HomePod mini before each was announced, revealed that the fourth-generation iPad Air would feature an A14 chip and a USB-C port, and more. Blass is excellent at what he does, but in this case, the latest information that he received is likely inaccurate for a variety of reasons outlined below.

First, reputable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo and many other sources have reported that the iPhone 14 lineup will not include an iPhone 14 mini. Instead, the lineup is said to consist of two 6.1-inch models (the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro) and two 6.7-inch models (the "iPhone 14 Max" and iPhone 14 Pro Max). It's possible the iPhone 13 mini will remain in Apple's lineup for a lower price for those who prefer a 5.4-inch screen.

Second, while the report claims that the entry-level iPad will stick with a 10.2-inch display, oft-accurate display industry analyst Ross Young said the 10th-generation iPad will feature a larger 10.5-inch display as part of a rumored redesign of the device.

Third, while the report claims that the Apple distributor is preparing to stock new iPad models in September, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman in his newsletter today said he expects new iPads and Macs to be announced at an October event, including the 10th-generation iPad and iPad Pro models with the M2 chip. Gurman said iPadOS 16 and macOS Ventura will be released in October, so new iPads and Macs that month would make sense.

Apple is planning to hold its iPhone 14 event on Wednesday, September 7, according to Gurman, so we're only a few weeks away from finding out which new devices are coming and when. Apple has yet to officially announce the event.

I can only hope this rumor combined with no iPhone 14 mini just means a confusion on the semantics and line up naming.
The mini will now be the new SE, the 14 are 6.1/6.7 regular and pros.
I’m definitely thinking somewhere someone saw a mini as a placeholder in some lineup. And that’s why this rumor started.

I hope the posters are correct that the next iPhone SE (March, 2023?) will be based on the "mini" form factor. If so then I'd expect some cost-related tweaks. Examples: power button-based Touch ID instead of Face ID, reworked display for the deleted Face ID (possibly lower resolution 60Hz OLED, around 1872x864 and 381 ppi versus the current SE's 326 ppi), a competent single lens rear camera instead of the dual setup, USB-C (since it'll be a longer duration model that has to meet new regulations), removal of the Magsafe charging magnets (but still with wireless charging as today, and maybe allowing a slightly bigger battery), possibly a smaller 64GB starting storage size (but hopefully not), some feature reductions in the radio section (no mmWave 5G, 2x2 antennas instead of 4x4, no UWB, but still excellent band coverage), fewer colors, no cables or power adapters in the box (unless a local regulation requires it), current iPhone 13 mini processor (A15) and RAM (4GB), slight price bump (starting at $449 in the U.S.)

Otherwise, if there's an iPhone 14 mini, here's more or less what I'd expect: 90Hz "ProMotion Lite," possibly a reworked Face ID/smaller notch, "A15s," bump to 6GB RAM, improved rear camera setup, slightly bigger battery (perhaps via a slightly thicker case), improved radio section (including new satellite-based low bandwidth emergency communications), no accessories in the box (except where required by regulation), same starting price.

Nope, an infinitesimal percentage wants the mini size. Why can’t people here accept the truth that mini aficionados are in a very small minority.

Except that Apple sells like 230mil+ iPhones in a year. At that volume, is it really that bad to accommodate maybe 15% of people that want a lighter weight more pocketable form factor? That's nearly 35million phones a year just for minis, which is WAY more than a bunch of other Android models sell.

When you're that huge it's OK to have some diversification.

iPhones are outselling Pixel phones, for example, by about 20:1.

Hooray for Sketchy Rumors, possibly my favorite kind of rumors!

Having the 2020 SE since 2020, I’ve resisted the 12 and 13 minis… I may not be able to resist a 14 mini, if true.

The iPhone 14 non pro models will have the A15 chip. But ShrimpApplePro says it will still offer more performance over the A15 in the iPhone 13 models. Due to new cellular modem and a new internal design, among other changes. We may see Vapour cooling chamber in the 14 series that will allow the chip to use more power without getting too hot. Right now if you put pressure on your chip Apple throttles down the chip to keep the phone cool.

They may use the slightly improved A15 chip that was in the old iPhone 13 pros (more ram, 1 more gpu core)

I don't see the iPhone SE getting USB-C in 2023 before the Pro or standard models. Apple has until late 2024 to implement that, though I'm not sure the rules would apply to already released products. The year after though I definitely could see it happening.

It sounded to me like the non-Pro 14 was going to get the same A15 with more RAM, and derive some power savings/efficiency from the X65 baseband.

You, sir, are definitely going to be dissapointed.

By the way, not sure what posters are you quoting, but the most reliable leaker in displays, Ross Young, already talked about the next iPhone SE screen: It is going to have a 5.7” display… so everything points towards the re-use of the iPhone X/XS/11pro body design.

Someone at Apple has to know there is a market for smaller phones. Give me a 3G or 4 model with today’s specs and I’m sold. Call it iphone retro 🤷‍♂️ I got short lil jimmy dean sausage link fingeres

I love my 13 mini, which I just bought, mainly because all the rumors said not to expect a 14 mini. I do hope, that the mini will be updated every second or third year, much like the SE, so that Apple won't give it up completely. I just love the form factor.

Definitely seems more likely that they will use it to replace the SE. Can't milk that old design for much longer.

Don't give the Mini lovers hope. It's NOT happening! :D

You're gonna need to buy a 6.1 or 6.7" phone if you want an iPhone 14
