That would ruin the whole point of the SE. Everyone I know who bought it bought it for the size, not the low price. I think they could get away with doing an iPhone X style bezel less screen to fit a larger screen in the same form factor, but increasing the overall size will hurt it.

That's what I keep saying. It's not about price. It's about size.

I mean... it worked for Nintendo. :D:p

Good point. Here’s something else along the same line of thought my earlier comment above. Consider Nintendo, primetime television, US auto makers, the music/film industries, etc, etc, etc. At some point, makers run out of meaningful new ideas to the point it’s decided your best bet is to repeat the past with “retro” designs.

I’ve lamented for a while that 99% of today’s cars look-alike nowadays, that 99.9% of today’s pop music is random robotic crap except for the occasional remake, and that most prinetime tv is utter crap unlike 20 years ago. It shouldn’t be overlooked that it really is possible to run out of meaningfully good new ideas... This completely flies in the face of manufacturers who are slaves to needing to show growth for shareholders, so they are often forced to reinvent just to reinvent. In the computer/mobile device world where it’s awful easy to rework software, that’s a perfect recipe for disaster, resulting in things like ios7 which still shows signs of clunkiness from the removal of intuitive design elements even 5 years on.

Apple is one of the worst imho for unnecessarily forced change, so until someone wakes up there or Timmy and J-Ive get replaced, we’re in for more bumpiness and unnecessary reinventions ahead, hopefully blunted by keeping things like the SE2 and MacBook Air around for users like me who value balanced design over anything else.

Don't understand the SE love. It's like being in love with a Toyota Camry instead of a Porsche 911.
Before there was the x or the plus designs, there was the se/5 design. I wasn't aware that a Porsche can convert into a Toyota. What are these, Transformers? Your logic is flawed.

Why does the author need to qualify "preferred by a subset of customers" as if its existence needs to be justified. Not everyone has phablet-sized ogre hands or enough elastic in their jeans to hold larger phones.

The logic is similar to the average 13 year old car enthusiast who judges a spotscar’s adequacy solely on 0-60 and 1/4-mile times.

Why does the author need to qualify "preferred by a subset of customers" as if its existence needs to be justified. Not everyone has phablet-sized ogre hands or enough elastic in their jeans to hold larger phones.

Because the author, like many closed-minded people, have blindly bought into Apple’s “the customer does not know what they want; only we, Apple, know what’s best for you, dear customer” point of view.

I have SE best designed iphone. My wife use(d) 7/8/X. None of them come close to the feel and construction of SE.

Nope, I applauded. For years I felt it was extraneous and Maybe even a luxury to have a built in optical disc reader. Plus, with digital music being so ubiquitous by then, there was nothing lost by not being able to play an audio cd now and then.

Why not get an extra pair of lightning headphones? Because there are probably a half dozen stereos into which I feed my phone on a weekly basis using an 1/8th inch audio cord. It’s pretty damn nice to be able to do that instantly without the effort of having to find and collect adapters or dongle’s. Also, I highly value of the ability to charge my phone and use the headphone jack at the same time very often, without having to carry around a Y-jack.

I assume you were born with two working feet. I bet it’s felt pretty darn convenient to have two for walking around and stuff. You could get along hopping in one, because I think so. So why not, and without whining. Or having a cardiac arrest. Be courageous. Think different.

Then you better buy a phone that has that old analog port. Soon they will go the way of the CD.

I like the SE form-factor.

All the newer phones since then were too light IMO. They just felt weird. That's why the often felt slippery and companies sold cases by the ship-load.
The X was the only phone since the SE that I felt happy with from a haptic point of view.

I don't have a long commute, I don't need to carry a large phone so I can watch TV shows etc.

Probably right. Better that Apple keeps focusing resources on Animoji’s and the eventual removal of unnecessary volume and on/off buttons.

And it will likely later return as a new customer-flexibility feature, with huge fanfare to boot, by executives who value balanced design over things like silvery aluminum Christmas trees.

Silly anti-mac nonsense. Bye.

My hands are salivating. My 5s has a broken front camera and flashlight, dents and dings as well as cracked and missing glass near the top-right corner bezel. But the screen area itself is 100% intact, and the phone is fully functional.

ugh, why would anyone buy that thing but if they HAVE to, why can't they at LEAST make it the form factor of the 6 series. What's the point in keeping with that 5 series?!
[doublepost=1519147277][/doublepost]

The bands on the top and bottom never made sense to me. If you're going to do that, why include glass for only those small portions? Looks so choppy and aesthetically so much more poor than the x design.
Because the 6 form factor is fugly

Yes and Lehman Brothers was one of the largest lending and investment firms in the US... then went bankrupt... over night.

Doing well today does not equal doing well tomorrow.

Lehman Brothers ran out of money. Apple has more than a quarter of a trillion dollars in the bank.

If Apple completely stopped selling everything and didn't make one single penny, AND they also did absolutely nothing to reduce operating expenses in the meantime, then they could still continue operating for a decade before they ran out of money.

I disagree. Actually there are a few reasons why people may have chosen the SE over other iPhones....

  1. Headphone Jack
  2. Flush rear camera
  3. "Classic" design
  4. Price
  5. Size
The weight of importance for each of these is highly subjective and dependent upon the needs/wishes of the individual.

For some segment of the SE customer base it is size, but not all... without a scientifically controlled poll we won't truly know what percentage that is.

It was the whole package (all 5 reasons) that brought me back to an iPhone. Having said that, I understand I'm pretty unique. :)

Agreed. In order of inportance for me :
1. Headphone jack
2. Size
3. Classic design
4. Price
5. Flush camera

I would gladly swap my iPhone 7 for an updated SE

Previously I posted this after one of the last stories about the next SE:

"If they made an SE version* that was akin to going from the iPhone 8 to the X – only ~4% larger in length and width, yet jumping to 426 ppi versus 326 ppi – then you could have a compact device with roughly 1600 x 900 pixels, measuring approximately 5.07" x 2.40 x 0.30". This would put the resolution about midway between the 8 and 8 Plus. I would buy such a device in a heartbeat.

*With the A11 of course."

I still think this would be great. It may not yet be possible to have good battery life with such a device due to the power consumption of that sort of display, and of course this would make for a pricier phone. Perhaps they could do an 'SE 2' with some modest updates to the internals, alongside a "mini X".

I love the SE design.

The only thing I like about the chassis on the newer phones is that they are waterproof.

To me it's about:

1. Size
2. Size
3. Size
4. Prize

Don't use Headphone jack that much anymore, but sure keep it for those who use it.
I wouldn’t mind a more upgraded phone, and I can pay more.
BUT KEEP THE SIZE, I LOVE THE SMALL PHONE‼️
If they make smaller bezels, fine, then larger screen is ok.
But I would be highly disappointed if they make it’s size larger.

While I agree that the SE is a nice phone, I think that paying less for a product often result in a higher satisfaction because a lot of people will lower their expectations.

If I paid $1000 for a phone I expect it to be perfect, the slightest problem and I become dissatisfied. Maybe because I'd be trying to justify the price and issues are really not helping. If I paid half that price I'd be more willing to overlook a few problems.

More realistically, the "highest customer satisfaction survey" win on the part of the iPhone SE was likely because in February 2017 the lineup was basically two sizes of iPhone 7 and three sizes of iPhone 6s, and if you were opting for the smallest one, namely the iPhone SE (which, beyond the naming itself was marketed discretely from the two bigger sizes), you were specifically and explicitly picking it and it was at least meeting your expectations.

I love the SE design.

The only thing I like about the chassis on the newer phones is that they are waterproof.

Jony Ive is the greatest industrial designer in the history of mankind. If anybody could lead a team to design a waterproof phone yet retain certain key user ease flexibility features like the headphone jack, he would be the one to do it. In fact, I bet he is working on at this very minute! Let’s all hold our breath in anticipation and exhale a resounding sigh of happiness when it appears! 1-2-3, hold breath!
