Exactly, the settings menu and user switching Lock Screen are great examples of bad UX purely for the sake of consistency.

They need to bring back good UX tailored to the Mac instead of just lazily porting everything new from iOS.

I thought the new settings is an improvement over what we had. We couldn’t resize the window before and I relied heavily on the search function to find everything except the most commonly used items. I didn’t like it at first because I had to relearn where everything was after a decade of using the old system preferences but the categorization now makes a lot more sense than what we had before.

There will be options to control contrast and translucency I'm sure (as always) but based on that screenshot alone (if that means anything) that looks like a nightmare. Even for people with good vision the UI contrast in that image is extremely low.
There's an "Increase Contrast" option in Settings, but I wouldn't be surprised if a new design largely ignores it.

We need Scott Forstall.

Dude took one for the team after the maps fiasco, and now his interface contributions are sorely missed.
he was fired because he refused to apologize for the Maps fiasco
A fiasco by the way that he caused, because there was still a year left on their Google maps contract.

How on earth is that taking one for the team?
The guy that made iOS the platform that it was basically said “that’s not my fault, I’m just the software guy, blame Phil or something.”
He is literally the guy that introduced and boasted about Apple Maps at that year’s WWDC, he was the face of it.
That was an awful move from him, and definitely wasn’t “taking one for the team.” The exact opposite infact.

None of us were in the room. All we know is his signature wasn't on the apology and he left shortly after. We've been stuck in iOS-7 purgatory for 10 years since then. It's time for a bit of a refresh.

Could be a step in the right direction. Having any design language is better than whatever they call the current state of iOS; bland and meaningless. It's so void of any character or flair.

Look back at days before iOS 7 — while some things look a little goofy, they had style. Each app was its own world, and the presence of colors and shapes and textures made things more immersive and more intuitive. Make software fun again.

iOS hasn't had a major visual design refresh, aside from the addition of dark mode, since iOS 7 in 2013 which is an awfully long time to stick with a UI. On the one hand I'm not a big fan of change for the sake of change, lest you wind up with a jumbled mix of UI design languages (see: Windows), but I think there's value in Apple bringing back some depth and tactile-ness to the interface without having to go back to full blown skeuomorphism. Maybe even just offer a visual style halfway between the stark white and stark black of light and dark modes (a la visionOS's gray glass)

It makes sense regardless of if true or not. Adding advanced lighting effects to the UI is likely the next step and Apple GPUs are more than capable. For instance a focus color could be backlit under a UI element and reflect naturally off its window, glow through translucent materials, and be dispersed or textured by MaterialX shaders. Not skeuomorphic, but a step back in that direction with more physically-based materials in the UI that behave naturally to light.

Completely agree, there haven't been any significant design changes since iOS7 and I feel the iPhones OLED retina displays are capable of so much more. I am very excited to see what iOS18 brings in terms of design.

Mark Gurman said iOS 18 might be the biggest update ever, and we've been seeing hints at that. Example: the action button menu which is realistic and doesn't fit with iOS. There are other examples.
Excuse me, what’s the action button? As far as I’m aware, the action button will be introduced with the iPhone 16, which is still 7 months away. Are you writing from the future?

I like that, although that would probably mean higher power consumption or more powerful SoC with a beefier GPU.

He's correct - the Action button was introduced in iPhone 15. You're thinking about the Capture button, which is the new one expected to be introduced in this September's iPhone.
