Samsung has no desire to spend more money on the display for higher frame rate, for a while now Apple has used better screens on iPhones than Samsung. LG is selling the
OLED65C8PUA tv which is 120 Hz OLED, but with a price tag to match.

I think there is a 40% chance all these will be characteristic of the 2019 iPhone XS Max successor. If they want to give it higher battery life than the XR they probably need it around 4000 ma/hr, the higher wattage charger to match makes sense. Of course it will be thicker because of those. The 3 cameras has been a rumor for a while and would make the XS max successor more distinguished from the XR successor. Lastly the 120 Htz display makes sense as Apple tries to usually give the best display to iPhones while the iPad already has it. The rarity of OLED 120 Hz is still pretty high, but it is very likely Apple will have the first one on a smartphone weather if it's this year, but they most likely won't next year because of the S generation delaying it to 2021.

TV OLED and Phone OLED are not the same, even though the name is the same.

And yet we are two years into the notch design and Samsung has yet to copy it in a shipping device (though they will soon). Using your thinking they should have had a notched phone a year before Apple did.

They don't always jump on things first and funnily displays seems to be the main place they don't jump head first even though they manufacture the panels used in the current iPhone X and XS models.

Really? last I heard, they rather punch a hole in the display than to have a notch...

Good to know, but still boring news I must say. I'm to the point that nothing that has been thus far announced about the next crop of iPhones excites me, and I don't know what they could come out with regarding new features that could. I just got the new iPhone XS Max and while it's a fantastic phone, the excitement wore off after the first few hours and now I see it pretty much as I see my old iPhone 6s Plus. New screen, new camera, more battery capacity.. boOoooOring. Apple needs to come out with an entirely new class of device, something that really turns the tech world upside down as the original iPhone did. I don't feel I'm alone in my opinion on this.

Apple, if you're listening, get off your keester and do something with the billions in your bank. Make me excited again. And ditch the programming, you're not Netflix for crying out loud. Oh, and get off my lawn! ;)

So what would make you excited again? Realistically the iPhone won't get much more exciting in the near future. The biggest thing I can think of is under the screen Face ID and no notch of any kind. After that there is 5G which will probably not do very much for most people. Medical applications are probably the most exciting things in the pipeline. Those aren't likely to excite people who are young and healthy though.

If they want to be a high growth tech company Apple will have to kill the walled garden. If not they can try using exotic materials and carry on being a premium hardware maker.

Earlier this month, Weibo user C Technology (via Wccftech) shared some alleged details about the upcoming successor to the iPhone XS Max, which may or may not be accurate.

The next iPhone XS Max has been pegged as the 2019 iPhone that will feature a triple-lens camera in 2019 by reliable sources, and the Weibo post offers additional details about the lenses. Apple will allegedly use a wide-angle lens, a super wide-angle lens, and a 3x telephoto lens. This would be similar to something like the Huawei P20 Pro, which also offers two wide-angle lenses and a telephoto lens with 3x optical zoom.

The second-generation iPhone XS Max is said to have a 4,000mAh battery, something that seems unlikely because the form factor of the device is not changing. Rumors have suggested Apple's 2019 iPhones will look quite similar to the 2018 lineup, with the exception of changes to the rear camera and perhaps some tweaks to front-facing TrueDepth camera system to make the notch smaller.

We've heard multiple rumors about a smaller notch, a detail also included in the Weibo post.

Other alleged features coming to the iPhone XS Max include 15W wireless fast charging, which would be an increase from the current 7.5W wireless charging speed, and a display with a 90 to 120Hz refresh rate.

Apple uses a 120Hz ProMotion display for the iPad Pro, allowing for a smoother, crisper, more responsive experience, so it's not out of the question.

C Technology has been known for sharing early iPhone information in the past, but the Weibo user aggregates leaks, rumors, and images from multiple sources, some accurate and some inaccurate. For that reason, and because some of this information sounds a bit unlikely, we're not confident about the veracity of these rumors.

We'll need to wait for secondary sources to back up this information before we can confirm its accuracy.

(Thanks, Tim!)

All I really want for the 2019 iPhones are USB-C. I’m not going to be upgrading my XS Max or my iPad Pro 10.5 for a few more years so I’ll still have lightning for a while, but the sooner the iPhones switch to USB-C, the better.

Well if the new iPhones really do lose 3D touch, shrink the true depth camera system, and consolidate the motherboard to fit a one cell battery, they might just be able to pull off 4000 mAh

There was no need for them to copy the notch design because they implemented the thin bezel aesthetic much better in the Galaxy S8, S9, Note 8 and Note 9 than Apple did in the iPhone X, XS and XR.
Agreed. I would much rather have a thin forehead instead of a notch in the display.

Variable refresh rates on an OLED phone costing $1100? This device would cost $1400 for base storage. Good luck selling it.

Usually Apple shrinks the battery as the components become more power efficient. If they are expanding the battery, maybe they are doing something that is making the iPhone less power efficient. Perhaps they are switching back to LCD or perhaps they are adding an "always-on display" feature.
Or perhaps they’re adding ProMotion, as the rumor mentions.

Also, is LCD less power efficient? I thought OLED would consume more power.

These are some appealing rumors, if some are true.

I suspect ProMotion on the iPad exists primarily for the benefit of reducing the latency while writing with the Apple Pencil. I’m somewhat doubtful that it will come to this year’s iPhones due to the OLED displays. Also, refreshing the screen that often cannot be good for battery life which is probably a bigger issue on the iPhone with its smaller battery than the iPad. Would love to be proven wrong though.

ProMotion is one of the best things to happen to the iPad. The iPad can match the display refresh of whatever content is playing, so watching movies in native 24p is just something extraordinary in this space. It's literally ruined watching movies on any other portable device. The iPad Pro is the BEST portable movie device on the planet, cause - you know, there aren't any other portable devices out there capable of 24p.

Well, maybe the new Razer Phone, but that remains to be seen.

OLED can be super power efficient because it creates black pixels by turning those pixels off. LCDs need to run the backlight whether the pixels are white or black. The reason the XR's LCD display uses less power than the XS's OLED display is that the resolution on the XR's display is a lot lower.

Since dark pixels use less power on an OLED display, a darkmode for iOS could be awesome for battery life on OLED iPhones.
