14nm processing? 30% better battery life (current model 10 hours)? 40% faster integrated Iris Pro graphics (current model is no slouch)? USB-C with support for USB 3.1 + Thunderbolt 3? Possibly a thinner form factor? Sign me up!

The speed in the Ax is one thing, being able to run x86 software is entirely another.

Sure, for plenty of people Ax is fast enough, but no boot-camp, no parallels, no quick and easy porting of Windows applications = a big downer for others.
Yes there are still software applications out there that only runs in a windows environment for which this would not be an option. Fortunately that is not as big a problem as before. My father, an architect, never wanted to get off windows because AutoCad had not ported over. They have now to OSX, but not fully to iOS. In my work everything is on the web, so platform is not as big a deal, unless you find one of those flash based websites. MS-office already works on iOS, and there are sufficient alternatives to Visio and Project that I really do not have any issues. But I recognize that there are specific applications that still require Windows. I am lucky not to need any of them :)

Again it is a step treatment to the 15" rMBP I don't understand why is Apple so lethargic, hesitant in upgrading the 15" when it is going on upgrading the 13" rMBP!!

And let's not forget according to Intel, Skylake was designed specifically for Windows 10.
Isn't that just pure marketing speech? Did they mention something more specific?
I miss the CPU advancements of the days of old. :(
I don't, it only means your device will be outdated faster. I'm looking forward to the day when ARM advancements will level out too.

So, by the time the 15" rMBP is out, we'll have 7th-gen Intel CPUs... Behind like usual.

Still better than Motorola chips that couldn't do tiddlywinks and were left in the dust by INTEL!

There is also an adjustment and trial period before new chips in mass production are reliable, plus the prices only go down with quality at almost 100% and larger runs.

With what Apple requires in quantity INTEL may not be able to produce all in a hurry.

Hence, gradual introduction by Apple.

What if Apple has decided to release a new "workstation" rMBP?

If so, Apple would have to wait until Q3 to release new rMBP's. According to the Motley Fool, "Intel has indicated that the first mobile Xeon-based systems should hit the market in the fall....

Intel might make its higher-performance Core i-series processors with GT4e graphics available to system vendors later this year. Indeed, said vendors should be able to deliver substantial upgrades to their lineups by moving from the older quad-core Haswell chips with GT3e graphics to quad-core Skylake processors with GT4e graphics."

Do not be fooled. This is not an altogether new CPU; rather it is a Skylake-H with additional features enabled. In other words, "this mobile Xeon is a quad-core Skylake processor with integrated GT4e graphics."

This is the trajectory I expect for Apple's rMBPs.

In short, this news of a further delay in the release new rMBPs is probably correct.

The article was written in the Summer of 2015 but Intel is behind, so it still might hold.

I hope they offer the dark aluminum color for the MBPs going forward. Sign me up!

I also hope they up the 15" to 16" as another rumor speculated. Make it beefy enough to run a 4K monitor alongside with GOOD performance and I would replace my iMac. One work computer instead of two sounds nice. Those were the days :)

Finally some MacRumors!

I hope this does not mean that the 15" rMBP will bring the redesign in Q3, while the 13" model will be stuck with this design yet another year...

It actually would make sense to redesign the 13" model first, seeing as the processors have been available for far longer, moreover the 13" model is unquestionably the best seller. However, knowing Apple, they will probably introduce the new design with the more expensive model, i.e the 15".

I'm just looking for a 13" MacBook Air with Retina Display though. People said the 13" rMBP was it, while it clearly isn't. I've used mine for nearly two years soon and I still miss my MBA. Hopefully the redesign will solve this, or I might try the rMB.

I hear you. It just wouldn't make any sense for the next update to either rMBP model to not adopt that highly sought after design / feature set of the rMB which is nearly a year old. Hell, even if they put in a quad-core Broadwell in the 15", not including the new battery technology, keyboard, color options, USB-C, etc. wouldn't make sense.

The rMBP should be superior and more beautiful than the rMB in every way, albeit a bit heavier and thicker.

Also, newsflash: don't expect any updated Macbook Airs.

13" and 15" Pro may get a redesign to be somewhat smaller, the air (I suspect) will be dropped from the lineup. A retina macbook air = essentially a macbook or slightly smaller form factor macbook pro.

or maybe we'll just see the 13" pro dropped and replaced by a 14" machine in the style of the new macbook and perhaps an extra port. 15" staying similar to what it currently is.

there's currently too much overlap in the apple lineup and updating the air for retina would only confuse things even more.

The MBA has ports, two screen sizes, better battery life, a stronger processor, and (most importantly) a much more desirable price point. When the rMB can fit most of these needs, it'll replace the MBA. Apple needs a <$1000 entry level, mass market laptop. They just released new education software for the iPad; they will continue to keep that demographic in mind.

Xeon processors have had their "announcement" along with the corresponding Skylake processors a few days ago. Therefore, again, no need to stagger their launch even if they were going to incorporate Xeon-class processors.

Call me paranoid maybe, but for me it's about security. Charging the thing is the only thing you HAVE to do in order to use it. I don't want the only non-optional thing I have to plug into my computer to have firmware-level access to the hardware. You can put some pretty nasty stuff on those public USB charging stations, or those third-party USB power adapters. I know it sounds silly, but where credit card skimmers were a problem in the 90's and 2000's, compromised USB chargers will be hidden in plain sight security issue in near future.

This. +100

I would want something like the old Matias TuneBlocker cable, something that you could be sure was only going to carry power and not data. (Unfortunately the TuneBlocker when in "blocking" mode also seems to block the high-current negotiation handshake, so things charge very slowly.) I still carry one around to use when connecting to a public USB charger.

Only thing that would make me upgrade this time around is quad-core chip in a 13/14" chassis (preferably with a 32GB option). I love my 15" - but it is too damn big to use in most airplane seats.

Windows 10 and Skylake processors were ‘designed together,’ says Intel’s Kirk Skaugen

"This is something that only happens once every decade or so," opines Skaugen while describing the perfect synchronicity in the release of Windows 10 and the sixth-gen Core processors. It’s rare for a brand new operating system to coincide so neatly with a new CPU generation, and the shared hype is likely to drive positive sales for both Microsoft and Intel. But there’s more to this coincidence than mere serendipity. Skaugen says Intel has been working on the Skylake architecture for more than four years, and it’s collaborated with Microsoft on generating some synergies along the way.

If all they'll show at an event in March are some new watch bands, maybe a new iPad Air and these then something's going to have to be worthy of an actual event...

Hope for a redesigned MBP 13 to ring in the new era of their pro machines, USB C (as well as standard 3.0), slimmer profile, thunderbolt 3 please.

The MacBook Air has been put to rest. Told you this was gonna happen. Of course it will still exist to keep it as an affordable Mac laptop.

The cMBP is still alive and kicking lol I have one of these and it's still running great

I remember that many folks suggested me to wait and not get a new rMBP 15" in June last year as Apple was expected to refresh it with Skylake. It was my first MBP and I really needed it for photo editing as I could no longer use my old laptop. I am glad I did not wait another year....

Interesting... I looked again and there is now at least one company making such things - charge-only USB-to-Lightning cables, little charge-only inline USB-A dongles (which I presume you could use with an A-to-C cable). The vendor I found is called "Portapow" - there may be others. They claim they negotiate the higher current protocols but still block data transfer.

I was really excited about the refreshed MacBook and then it came out. Honestly, it's not even the single connector so much as:

1. I actually have quite a few Thunderbolt accessories (looking forward to the USB-C to original TB adapters forthcoming on the new Pros... ugh).

2. That keyboard... is... just... horrible.

My personal dream is the day I can connect an external video card. I boot into Windows to game occasionally, but I much prefer lighter/smaller laptops. I'm running a 15" rMBP now only because the deal I got was too killer to pass up.

I want a 5K Thunderbolt display. Whenever that's available is when my next upgrade is likely.

The idea that Apple would not release 15 inch models until later just "to give the current 15-inch MacBook Pro a longer shelf life before replacing it" is absurd to me. The 15 Retina has hardly had any significant changes for almost 4 years now. Tiny bumps in processor speeds and a couple minor GPU changes have been peanuts. Meanwhile, all kinds of competitors have Thunderbolt 3 Skylake notebooks with similar resolution, size, etc.

Apple are going to release the 15 absolutely as quickly as possible. They're already many months late. I find the notion that they would update more slowly for no very compelling reason to be laughable. Who comes up with this stuff?

Unfortunately, that's the absurdity of their business model. To the consumer it just looks like they are stifling progress in order to squeeze the most money out of each revision. I would think they would be able to funnel tons of cash from the lucrative iPhone profits to ignite some awesome progress/hype in their computer division, but all that money is probably going to Project Titan. And honestly, they probably would see that move as thinking backwards, which might be a valid point.

I think one could extend an argument that this kind of BS is an example of serious inefficiency endemic to profit driven businesses. The delays in progress by the world's most valuable company seem absurd and aggravating to consumers who would gladly give them money for a product they are perfectly capable of delivering. But, then again they hardly make much money from their computer sales (relatively), so I'm sure they have it on the very back burner.

or maybe we'll just see the 13" pro dropped and replaced by a 14" machine in the style of the new macbook and perhaps an extra port.

that would be pretty awesome
