Only thing that would make me upgrade this time around is quad-core chip in a 13/14" chassis (preferably with a 32GB option). I love my 15" - but it is too damn big to use in most airplane seats.
This guy gets it. I travel a lot and I can never unfold my 15" with the seat tray. The new 13" MBP should be more than powerful enough to do what the 15 MBP does (even without a dGPU). The Skylake chips have 40% faster Iris Pro integrated graphics, closing the gap.

Needless to say, I've sold my 15" MBP and will be buying the new 13" Skylake MBP for a perfect balance of power vs. mobility.

I wonder if the 2nd generation of the 12" MacBook will be much faster? How much of an update are we talking? I'm holding out until the 2nd generation, and until it becomes a little bit cheaper, my 2011 MacBook Pro is still working.

Unfortunately, that's the absurdity of their business model.
There business model has been to release a new MacBook Pro, on average, every 250 days. It has been 325 days since the release of the March 2015 13in rMbp. Anything past May seems like a stretch

I would guess (purely guess) new Skylake MacBook, MacBook Pro 13, and iPad Air 3 at March event.

Then iOS 10, next OS X, Skylake MacBook Pro 15 at WWDC.

Then iPhone 7, "4 inch iPhone", Apple Watch 2 in September.

iPad Pro update sprinkled in there somewhere.

Edit: If article's rumor is true about MacBook Pros production timing, then I am totally wrong.

If Apple really wants to stay in the game, expect to see quad core processors in the Skylake rMBP 13, since that's what you get with the 13 inch Microsoft Surface Book.

Can't be bothered waiting anymore, bought a spectre x360 and it's great :)

I'm thinking of replacing my VAIO FW with the new Spectre x360 15". The 13" version released last year got great reviews and if you need a well-made Windows laptop, it's one of the best options out there. I'm also thinking of buying the revised MacBook 12" or possibly a 14" model. It's either that or maybe wait for Apple to release a redesigned MBA with Retina display and Skylake.

What about a redesigned Skylake MBA with a Retina display?

Xeon processors have had their "announcement" along with the corresponding Skylake processors a few days ago. Therefore, again, no need to stagger their launch even if they were going to incorporate Xeon-class processors.

Thanks. I missed that.

So... A MacBook? Haha kidding.. But seriously, those two product lines almost have to converge at some point given how similar they are/how similar their objectives are IMO.

staggered doesn't sound good.... u know there's going to be issues.... Then again maybe its just to to hype everyone up ... What do I know. Next week all will be ok.

"This is something that only happens once every decade or so," opines Skaugen while describing the perfect synchronicity in the release of Windows 10 and the sixth-gen Core processors. It’s rare for a brand new operating system to coincide so neatly with a new CPU generation, and the shared hype is likely to drive positive sales for both Microsoft and Intel. But there’s more to this coincidence than mere serendipity. Skaugen says Intel has been working on the Skylake architecture for more than four years, and it’s collaborated with Microsoft on generating some synergies along the way.
The always-on bs-detector in my brain is filtering everything from this paragraph except the highlighted words. If Microsoft wasn't so bad at doing meaningful OS updates and if Intel could keep their own release cycles, than there would be way more opportunity for actual collaboration. Instead both companies bank on a shared hype of two new things at the same time. They are supposed to form a WINTEL monopoly, yet this serendipity happens only once every decade or so? That describes the very opposite of collaboration.
The coolest new feature in Skylake, though, is a technology Intel calls Speed Shift. ... A Windows 10 update will enable this functionality in the "near term", and it might be something we can expect on Mac computers as well ...
The coolest new chipset feature is not even supported in Windows 10 right now? Wow! So much synergy between these two companies.

Doesn't make sense to wait for months to release a Skylake MBP - any redesign could have been proactively done. Apple have received manufacturing samples to design a new motherboard, and allow a redesign.

The 2015 machines are getting a bit old in the tooth.. Time for a good refresh.
Definitely too old to shell out the premium. Hope these come soon, looking to retire the 2011 MBP to the kids and handing over $2500+ for "old" hardware gives me heartburn, even if it would be sufficient for my needs. Plus I've secured the wife's blessing to budget this in. Just like a corporate budget, the longer those funds go unspent, the more management wants to reallocate those funds...

I'm currently on a mid-2010 15" and had been anxiously waiting for Skylake, but then that article came out here on Macrumors a month or so ago about why Apple still hadn't released a 4K/5K external display and it having something to do with not really being able to run well/natively/without some patch or workaround until some other tech comes out in 2017.

I know the Skylake can drive a 4K at 60 Hz, but that article mentioned some other bottleneck or something, that won't be resolved until 2017 (too lazy to go back and look at the article).

As the owner of an also very old 2008 24" ACD (which has been fantastic/flawless), I figure there's no point in replacing my computer until I can also get a 4K/5K external to go with it at the same time, so 2017 at the earliest for me, unless my machine craps out before then. When I buy I like to get a massive upgrade and keep it for a long time, so compared to what I have, a retina machine with a retina external represents that huge upgrade, everything else aside. Just sucks it's like probably close to two more years away from now.

I knew the Air was dead. It won't get another update ever.

The rMB can keep it's one USB-C port, but I will not buy it until they have a dedicated charging-only port, which would ideally be MagSafe2. I don't want to hear the bull that there isn't enough space - there is.

Where exactly is the space to put another port? I'm sure you know better than Apple...

The only place to put it is where the headphone jack is.

No problem, meight buy a surfacebook in the end and skip this version entirely till next one. Since apple does skip 15 inch macbook pro.

WHAT ABOUT THE MAC MINI?!

The mini hasn't had a decent update in over three years. The late 2014 one was a bloody joke.

No wonder Apple had to issue an update for Snow Leopard. Some mini owners are still waiting for a decent hardware boost. (I upgraded the RAM in my mid-2007 to 2GB so have Lion; Safari 6.x not so good as websites update.)

I need to upgrade from my 2010 Macbook Pro ASAP for work, and I'm not sure if I should wait for the next version or not.

I've been waiting for Skylake to upgrade my 2007 15" MBP which I got in summer of that year so it'll be a nine year upgrade cycle. I think I got my money's worth.

Let's hope the Macbook gets a fairly fundamental revisiting to sort out it's dreadful keyboard, and to fix it's camera too.

I actually love the keyboard on the new MacBook, but yeah, that camera is an embarrassment. 720p is a minimum.
