can anyone confirm if it is possible to output the video to TV using AV cables?

I see no reason to believe this will ever be possible, the AV cables only output ipod videos, no menus and no other app content. Yes some developers have been shown outputting their games onto a tv during testing, but this is not going to carry over to a user experience (at least not yet)

I was using the Apple AV cables and it worked for me with the Youtube app. It might possibly work. I don't have a way to test this until I get back in the US and get it set up though.

ATT fun police

I think it is crazy that ATT can influence Apple this way, I live in the UK and have an iPhone on o2 and unlike ATT there are NO data restrictions on 3g. o2 even released a statement last year saying they were happy to allow iPhone tethering with laptops but ATT wouldn't! I am pretty sure o2 would have allowed sling over 3g.... Boooooo

Just installed it, works great with my first generation Sling: so much for having to buy a new one. 3G would be great but so far am very impressed.

I find it very strange that O2 would release a statements to customers with regards to an American cellphone carrier. In truth, the decision for you to have no video streaming over your 3G is not AT&T's, but Apple's decision. It's Apple's decision not to allow Sling to release an App only available through the UK App Store.

Anyways, I'm sure the big wigs at O2 cried themselves to sleep the day their found out they couldn't allow video streaming over their 3G network. *Sarcasm off*. The truth is; no video streaming over 3G = your loss, not O2's.

Where the heck do I fine the slingplayer id? I can't login without it and am trying to set up a sling account.

I am extremely disappointed in all parties to this mess.

It's all be been well stated here already.

AT&T just sucks. Period. Lousy network, doesn't listen to consumers, enough said. People choose the iPhone, but they sure don't choose AT&T and if and when there is an alternative, there will be a mass exodus from AT&T. i don't travel internationally and so GSM isn't that big a deal to me. I'd jump on a CDMA Sprint iPhone, if Apple made one. I'd even pay to get out of my AT&T contract. I can only hope that some lawyers decide to file a class action against AT&T and Apple for False & Misleading Advertising.

Apple capitulates to AT&T's demands and that sucks.

SlingMedia is just plain greedy and hungry for revenue by a) charging full price for a crippled wi-fi only iPhone app and b) forcing users to buy a new Slingbox when the old one works just fine (until they cripple it via software, forcing users to spend hundreds more on a new box that adds no functionality, Meanwhile, Sling fails to treat the Mac equally on their applications; no HD, etc.)

So, if you are not using a jailbroken phone, DO NOT BUY the $30 iPhone Slingplayer that runs on wi-fi only. Deny SlingMedia the revenue.

Since it looks like there is a hack for jailbroken phones to trick the phone into using the 3G connection. (It works for Skype and can be made to work for Sling) then sure, go buy the app if you want it and stream like crazy over 3G.

Just one more reason to jail break your iPhone! It's easy to do, it's not "dangerous" and it certainly is legal.

Errr am I missing something? Where did I say o2 released a statement about an American cellphone carrier? I said o2 even released a statement last year saying they were happy to allow iPhone tethering with laptops but (I think this is were you got a bit confused here we go, are you ready.....) ATT wouldn't! E.g. ATT won’t allow tethering not o2 said they wouldn’t....

iPhone OS 3.0 has carrier specific 3g data configuration files built in which means that issues like this could be region/carrier specific in the future.

Now…. sure ultimately Apple makes the decision not to allow it but it was under the influence of their chosen carriers what do Apple care how much band width people use!!!

I’m sure if Apple gave the option for 3g streaming o2 would be happy to allow it, Little thing called customer satisfaction.

In answer to Papafroker - yea, its WiFi only in UK too :(

$30 is too much for an app that works only via WiFi. I might have considered purchasing Sling hardware if I could use the iPhone anywhere over the carrier network, but the utility doesn't merit the cost for me.

The only way to strike back is to boycott the iPhone, App store and iTunes until it hurts Apple and AT&T so much financially that they do something about it. Also if you don't buy a new iphone this Summer, you strike a blow to both AT&T and Apple. It is time they learn that we the customers are in power not them. They must give us what we want. So let's start up a grass roots effort and boycott both companies. If we can elect our first African-American president via grass roots i'm sure we can teach these 2 fat, greedy companies that they can not get away with this.

Even if you don't care about Sling, your invested in this as it's just a matter of time before they pull some other crap that effects you.

FIGHT BACK, BOYCOTT APPLE AND AT&T. SAY NO TO NEW IPHONES THIS SUMMER!!!!

Good luck with that, sparky...

So let me get this straight: up until now, you've apparently had no problems with the iPhone. You have to own one, otherwise you probably wouldn't have bothered being in this forum.

Yet because someone releases an application that allows you to WATCH YOUR FRIGGING TELEVISION ON IT, that is what is going to instigate a boycott?!?

But no, on second thought, you're right. We should boycott. I mean, this device allows me to watch television on the go, but I can't watch it EVERYWHERE, ANYTIME I WANT!!! WAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHH!!!!!! OMG, I'M NOT NEAR A HOTSPOT AND I'M GONNA MISS AMERICAN IDOL!!!!

Your priorities are way out of whack, dude. Boycotting over this? I suggest you sell your iPhone if you're clearly this upset.

Given all the drama from the circumstances surrounding the SlingPlayer Mobile launch, we felt it newsworthy to post about the availability of Sling Media's app.

SlingPlayer Mobile is now available [liTunes ink] in the App Store. The $29.99 application allows you to watch and control your home TV and DVR from your iPhone and iPod touch. This is accomplished though the use of one of SlingMedia's media devices. Unfortunately, due to concerns about network congestion, the application will only stream video over Wi-Fi connections and does not support 3G or EDGE.

I don't care for this decision either, but wi-fi is better than nothing. I didn't think it was slingmedia that made that decision, and I don't think it was apple. I think the agreement they have with att forces them to allow the carrier to have some control. The other smartphone carriers would probably like to have this kind of control and are probably looking at ways to limit network traffic, look cable internet providers are started to do that. But the monitoring tech just isn't that good yet, the app store being a single point of purchase is a convience but also an evil too.

Given that, the slingplayer iphone version produces a far better quality picture than the other versions.

We have sprint also, actually we haven't as a family decided on att as a carrier, I have an iphone and I am in the developers program , so I make it a point to have the latest iphone and touches. With the potential to bring in a little extra money for app sales.

Even on the sprint network, I tend to only use the slingbox with wi-fi because the video quality is horrible over 3g.

I firmly expect sometimes in the future these carriers will move to a tiered access policy, and if you want to use something that uses a lot of bandwidth your going to pay for it, but it will be allowed.

wi-fi only

too bad its wi-fi only. But seems that this announcement sets some guidelines. We dropped development of a video streaming application because we were positive it wouldn't make it past the app store requirements.

We kind of have a web only version , but doesn't work very well with 3g anyway.

So now we are considering restarting the whole thing as a native app, in addition to sling a few other video streaming apps have been approved, almost all only wi-fi. But at least we know what the boundaries are.

You can read about our efforts here.

You are missing the point here. This isn't just about "slinging". A lot of people are angry because of what this decision implicates.

Wow, Sling was positioned to make a lot of money with this app. I am sure I am only one of many who would have ran out and picked up a slingbox.

Instead, I sit here for the first time wishing the iPhone was on Verizon too. Then the companies would both be bending backwards to keep my business.

(What is it gonna take to watch baseball anywhere?)

Can anyone give me an unbiased review of the application? How does it work? I've been reading the remote kind of sucks. Anyone else have anything to add?

I guess they are saying that the Blackberry is insignificant. I'm becoming less impressed with AT&T. I've had them for years, but what choice do I have?

I know!

Ditch the iphone.
Buy an iPod Touch (wait for the next generation)
Get a cheap, generic phone, pay as you go or no contract. I wish they had Cricket Wireless in my area.

Done.

Verizon sucks. AT&T sucks. T-Mobile and Sprint service sucks - at least where I live. I'm tired of paying all of this money for cellphone and data service anyway.

No, not missing the point. I just think that the decision on this one application is the stupidest reason to go and suggest something as ridiculous as a boycott.

I enjoy the occassinal show. I'm not a huge TV buff, so I don't have a Sling box, nor will I ever. So take this for what it's worth, but I've been following the antics of Sling ever since we first heard about that their app was in the works. I for one would like to see a huge backlash from their user base. Maybe in the form of not buying this app. The only way to see the price come down is to not buy it.

First it was supposed to work on every device. Then they said it would only work on their new high-end boxes. It was supposed to work over EDGE, 3G, and WiFi. Now it's only WiFi. To make promise after promise and then drop the ball at the end is criminal. $29.99 is a slap in the face to all the customers that went out and dropped damn-near $200 on a Sling box. You can't use the app without the box, so why is the app not free?

So tell me, Sling users, how to you feel about coughing up $30 to pay for Slings R&D costs? It took them soooo much longer to develop this app than they thought that I guess they have suffered some kind of financial loss, and you're all making up for that with the hefty $30 price tag. For $30, those TV shows better play like DVDs.

$$$$$

Well $30 bucks here and you also need a Slingbox too, another $200.

Maybe if I bought the Slingbox you would think this App would be free?:)

Only works on WIFI?

Maybe Apple and ATT are joining forces on something new with ATV?

Hope so, since I already have an ATV.....

:apple:

So whats the cheapest Slingbox that this app will fully work with? (changing channels etc.)

For all the people who are mad you can not cut your cable STB on from the app just leave it on at all times. When you hit the power button on a STB all it does is send out black video to the tv. It uses the same amount of power. The only way to cut it off is to pull the plug. I work for one of the top cable mso in the US in a lab testing the hardware and software so I am sure this is how it works.
