No change. It might even be worse. iOS devices lose the connection to an AirPort Extreme while a macbook stays online. It's iOS causing the issue.

In the meantime, I've named the 5 GHz ssid differently so that devices don't try to use it. Not a viable solution for everyone, but it's OK for here.

Same issue here on my home network (Airport Extreme AC and various AExpresses). Wifi lagged or no download at all although excellent signal strength, both on 5GHz and 2,4GHz. Affected devices were iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPhone 6+, iPhone 6, Iphone 5c all running on iOS 8.1 (final).

Found a fix, at least for me! Network is rock solid again, tested for 48h before reporting here.

What solved the problem for me was to disable ALL Airplay devices in the network. Meaning I disconnected the Apple TV from Wifi, disabled Airplay in my MFP and all Airport Expresses and *pling* was enjoying full Wifi performance.

Give it a try. Cheers

(PS: was reading MacForums for a couple of years now, this thread forced me into finally registering)

My WiFi is Fixed now, before 8.1 was loaded.

Okay. Iphone 6 plus and erratic wifi. There is another thread here on MacRumors which addresses this problem. My router was still set for "WEP" encryption. Others have posted that simply changing to a higher level of encryption (wpa2) solved their problem.

So, I tried it. That did it. The hardest part is remembering the passwords for accessing the router, via its' IP address. Don't ask me why this works, but it does. I routinely connect at 30-40 meg now, and it is consistent, day after day. This was a 5 minute fix.

I did not have a wifi problem on my wifes' 4S, only the 6 Plus.

I cut and pasted the OP's suggestion, and I'll paste it here now:

"I've had a problem with my wifi since I bought the iphone 6. I get good speeds for a time, then it drops off and gets slow again. Tried resetting anything and everything. Then I did this: went to my browser, typed in "what's my ip", copied my ip address and pasted in my address bar. Logged into my Verizon acct. the user name should be admin and the password should be a mix of letters and numbers on your router, unless you've changed these user names and passwords. Once logged in I went to advanced wireless settings and changed my security settings from WEP to WPA2 and reset my password to a 16 digit key. Save the settings and log out. Then since I have a pc I changed the settings on my wifi to match the settings I just changed. Then I went into my iPhone's settings < general < reset < reset network settings. and that's it. Been doing speed tests and it been working fine. Hope this helps yall.

Once you've done this, don't forget you will need to change the wifi password on all your household wireless devices, including your wireless printer.

I too seem to have early success switching the router from WPA to WPA2. Just one night of stable wifi connection, so it will take more time to know for sure.

Before the change my IP6 would regularly flip back and forth between the wifi connect and cellular. My iPad4 and iPhone 4S have had no problems with wifi running 8.1, so it's something about the IP6's hardware and 8.1 that doesn't like wifi for some users. Some people with IP6's claim their wifi has always worked normally, so maybe a bunch of units have faulty network chips?

If you are having wifi issues with ios 8, like me. Can you try something. Change your 5ghz band to 100. I've done it and so far, it's stable. The lower channels would lose data every now and again

Unfortunately I had one incident where it stop receiving data again. Back to 2.4Ghz band. Shame. Hope Apple fix this soon.

That's a shame. Are you completely disabling the 5Ghz network or just connecting all your devices to the 2.4ghz? My issues are present whilst connecting to either of the bands.

All,

I tried the escrge 1843 method(https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6638152?start=0&tstart=0
) last night and it definitely made things a lot more stable but speed was affected. My usual Speedtest app gives me 50 Mbs Down but after setting the networks to 5ghz - A only and 2.4ghz to B/G the maximum I was able to achieve was 25 Down.

Even after sleep and wake for several hours two out of three devices (IPad Air 2 and 5S) remained connected but unfortunately my iPhone 6 Plus which was behaving better on the previous 5ghz setting lost connection this morning and I had to toggle Wi-Fi on/ off.

So in summary this method is the best temporary fix to date (especially for Linksys/Cisco routers) albeit not perfect for all IOS devices in the same household.

I'm definitely going to buy the new ASUS AC68 router which I think will solve the problem as I'm hearing good reports from numerous sources!

I have been having this same issue with unstable wifi data transfer since updating to iOS 8. Issue remained in 8.0.2 and still remains in 8.1.

I have tried everything in this thread and as others say, they either do not work at all, or work for about an hour and the problem comes back.

Today I reported the problem to Apple customer care by phone. The guy I was speaking to seemed to have heard the same story many times before, and I kept asking him if he knows about this issue... after a few times he finally admitted this was a very common problem and Apple are aware of it.

He tried to fob me off with the simple reset network settings option, and reboot the router, but after telling him I had tried this, he said "I'll recommend something I've never told anyone else before, but turn off Wifi Location Services, and maybe also download an app to turn off ROM services". I had heard of the Wifi Location Services suggestion before, but not the ROM services one via some sort of app. I am sceptical that any app on the app store would even be able to access that kind of low level code. Anyone know more about this?

I was very close to buying a new router today, but then I thought it worked fine in IOS7, it's definately an IOS8 software issue, why should I spend £150 on a new Asus or Netgear router which may also have the same issue!

I'm just so fed up with this problem :(

We need more people to report the problem to apple via their feedback form to make them aware of the number of people having this issue.

The more people that report it, the faster it will be fixed.

I got rid of my Linksys EA4500 and got the ASUS RT-AC68U - AC1900. I was due an upgrade to get on the AC standard anyway so wasn't overly annoyed!

Since testing it over the weekend it seems that my Wi-Fi issues have been resolved. I haven’t had a single drop or had to toggle the Wi-Fi switch on/off to get it the connection live again. Speeds have been consistent and this is across all my devices including :

iPhone 6 Plus
iPad Air 2
iPhone 5S
Macbook Pro Retina – 2012 non AC version

I hope this lasts but so far so good although I appreciate this is a deep routed iOS 8 problem that only occurs with certain router brands / chipsets.

Either way apple need to resolve this in the next update for the vast majority of us and this certainly shouldn’t force us to upgrade our existing equipment!

Good luck to all and I’ll post back if things start to get sour again!!

That sounds promising! I'm close to buying the asus so can you please keep us updated ?

I am having a consistent slow down on my iPhone 6 with 8.1. I have a DLink three antenna router. I need to toggle to another neighboring network and then back to mine to get fast speeds again. I should be getting 30 Mbps uploads but I am getting half of that instead. Curiously, the downloads are not affected.

It is a very annoying problem. I tried my old DLink router and it is giving me the same problem.

I hope Apple fixes this soon.

Same problem. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS.

Wifi will drop at least twice a day to unusable speed - so that browsers and apps show the message "No Network Connection".

I have to toggle Wifi on/off and only then Wifi is back to normal.

Brand New iPhone 6 - iOS 8.1 and still have that problem.

WTF :apple:

I have to toggle to another network in the neighborhood and then back to mine to eliminate the slowdown in my speeds. But five minutes later the speeds are cut in half (30 to 15 download).

Not slow from me. Showing 121m down 12m up to the older 802.11n airport express. My connection is 105m Comcast.

Today apps just stopped working over Wifi, was using Google Maps and suddenly nothing would load. Tried other apps and the same thing, nothing loading. Turned off Wifi and LTE worked fine. Turned Wifi back on and it stopped working. This was on work Wifi. Work Wifi wasn't down since I could ping sites and that worked.

When I got home Wifi seemed to be working again.

Reading from mac yosemite wifi issue forum. It indicatest that the preference file is corrupt.

I tried to create new SSID name for my wifi with hope it will generate new settings file. So far so good. I'll keep update see if it works permanently

My iPad mini constantly loses WiFi signal as does my 5 and i'm on iOS 8.1.
Also, YouTube is slow as hell on my Retina mini, though it's probably to do with crappy YouTube iOS optimisation.

This seemed to be caused by the Auto proxy being set. My work uses an auto proxy. It works fine on my PC, but my iPhone got all screwed up by it despite the fact that the site I was accessing was a "DIRECT" connection (no proxy).

Help a little but doesn't fix the issue

I have an iphone 6 on ios 8.1 and also have wifi slowdown. My wifes iphone 5s (not on ios 8) runs at 18mb/s and my ipad (also not on ios 8) runs at the same speed but my 6 only gets 1.5mb/s.

I've tried everything:

- restart router
- change router channel/security (have always been on wpa2)
- erased all settings on iphone
- disabled background updates
- disabled blutooth

Nothing seems to work. Funny thing is my upload speed is normal (6mb/s) but the download speed is what seems to be throttled. I never had an issue before ios 8.

I have the exact same thing as you do and only on my iPhone 6. My iPad mini 2 and iPhone 5s are not affected. My download speed is cut in half from where they should be, but my upload speed are unaffected.

I also tried what you tried and even swapped a different router and it is still happening.

Just to let you know I upgraded to the Asus RT-AC68U last weekend and have been running my Air 2, 6 Plus and 5S perfectly now for a week without any wifi Issues.

These are all on the 5Ghz network and working at full speed.

Brilliant! My asus should arrive today :)
