This is interesting. But I really do not want someone going back through my trash to find something I wanted to be destroyed.

You don't get it. When you put something in the Trash in MacOS 9 there was a "Put Away" command which would return the file whence it came. In MacOS X (and for no good reason) Apple gutted the Finder, and this very useful feature was one which got the axe. This isn't to let people be able to go through your Trash history and find a deleted file; this is so you can go through your own Trash and put files accidentally trashed back where they belong without having to first figure out where they came from.

And gee, it only took them what, eight years to restore this very useful feature? Nice. I just hope they don't bork this like they did labels.

Looks like there are some UI changes happening. Just hope that Apple has a few more "features" up its sleeve to go with the speed bump...

trash the stupid "cover flow" feature in finder and give us "tabs" instead....that would be awesome:cool:

honestly, who uses cover-flow in finder????
I don't see any advance or a real benefit for the user in cover-flow-finder......
and to those who say:" ...just putting features in for the sake of adding something..." refering to mircrosoft,
this is just what apple did with this stupid cover-flow-thing in finder...

WOW. This is big. Chalk up one less thing that Windows users can complain about!

I would say this is very small, not big. However, all of the little things add up, and that is why Mac OS X is so much better than Windows Vista. The little things make the Mac great!

Like little things, which is what the OS needed. I also hope that Apple doesn't promise anything but fail to deliver. The Stacks navigation thing would be nice, as well as put back, but I am hoping that Apple gives us some more UI enhancements, little tweaks I should say, that we haven't already begged for, and that weren't taken away from OS9 then put back in.

Maybe something that no one has really though of just yet.... maybe using some Dashboard widgets on the desktop without having to install 3rd party software, or somethings that people are doing with Geektool.

Cool this is good news. I always like some new features, especially as Apple has stopped us from expecting any. :)

Every version of osx so far has had some kind of tweak to the UI. I have a completely crackpot theory about this:
From 10.0 to 10.4 osx slowly turned from pinstripes to a 'candy-coated' interface to match the shiny white hardware. 10.5 gave us a more 'aluminum' look, like the new aluminum hardware, but left some items from the candy days. My guess is that the new interface in 10.6 is going to mimic the aluminum/black hardware by giving us gray windows with black buttons and scrollbars akin to iLife 09.

I used coverflow once, then i realized its easier to open quicklook and navigate with my keyboard.

thats cool n all but yno wt id really like.. quicklook everywhere. within stacks or within the spotlight results drop down or within the select file window (like in mail or trying to attach something).
that would really be cool.
:rolleyes::cool:

Yes that is really what I am looking for: A quick way to have a preview on your search results.

What good is the tight Spotlight integration when I need to open every document just to find out it is not the one I am looking for?
I still miss Copernic Desktop search for Windows that had such an easy preview...

I also want to have the ability to search in the preview, maybe even copy thinks out?? This would be really amazing!

Good tidbits about new finds in Snow Leopard. I am looking forward to the upgrade. I think Apple is following a good path.

I still have the first generation MacBook with Intel Core Duo. I was wondering how much faster 10.6 is compared to Leopard? Will I see any significant difference or should I upgrade?

I would hope that these kind of simple additional features will be in an update to 10.5 if we don't see a PPC version of 10.6.

I don't expect that. Apple has always closed the book on new features for the previous OS version, only continuing to release security updates. Backporting new features to legacy OS versions, and then testing and supporting them, is a major resource drain.

Since everyone is posting their SL wish lists, I would like to see Apple make all of their apps truly friendly to case-sensitive filesystems, so we could finally start using HSFX.

Put Back also had a better use - putting something you dragged onto the desktop back into whatever folder you dragged it out of. How many times have you dragged an icon onto the desktop and then forgotten which folder to put it back into? I believe that was the original main use.

Yep, that is correct, I remember that from the OS 6 days. Normally done with stuff from floppies.

I second that. This is the one of the few reason I still use PathFinder. Tabs helps a lot at manipulating files around, or when you are handling a project that requires files from multiple folders, organized at different places. PathFinder even save a layout of the tabs for different projects / requirements. So you can make multiple layout for different tasks. Very very handy. Looks like I will always use PathFinder. The only thing I dislike right now is when things open up back again in Finder, and multiple Finder windows still are present on my desktop. PathFinder has a solution but it is not without risk.

...According to those familiar with the latest developer build, clicking on a folder in Stacks smoothly opens the new folder in Stacks while shrinking the parent window as a small icon on the top left. This allows you to quickly navigate in and out of folders in Stacks. ...

Great! :D
Now, let's stay focused on stability and performance enhancements...

I wish OS/X had an "Invert Selection" option, like Windows seems to have always had.
So that, for example, if you went into a folder with 100 items, and you wanted to keep 2 of those items and trash the other 98, you'd only have to select the 2 items you want to keep, then "invert selection" and delete.
