It's just that when compared to what's happening on the Windows side, Snow Leopard is sort of a letdown. There's just not much going on from an end-user perspective." Paul Thurrott

That's a bit of a stupid statement, really. Windows 7 is simply a comeback to the qualities of XP, mainly in terms of responsiveness. After Vista ANYTHING would be a big improvement. Apple didn't deliver a crap OS in Leopard so they could hardly improve SL back to the heights of Tiger (the obvious analogy), could they?

MS Laptop Hunters ads made Apple lower it's prices. Or do you want to deny that FACT too?

So, mere assumptions by people on an internet forum are facts now?

Could it not be that the price drop could have had ANYTHING to do with the economy and generally falling prices for laptops because of lower component costs?

Jeeez. Some people are so stuck in their ways.

Same here, I ordered at the beginning of the week and got an email today that it's been shipped Fedex Overnight... I was surprised they didn't just do 3 day and shipped it out earlier, would have saved money.

Apple probably wanted to ensure no copies leak before the 28th. As for costs; I'd bet Apple pays very little more, if any, for such an overnight shipment. they load FedEx planes full of goods every day in China; their pricing structure is probably good enough that they'd rather get it in people's hands on the 28th and have less disruptions at the Apple stores if they run out. Preorders tend to smooth the supply chain as many of the must have types order online.

If they shipped it 3 day, some people would get it early and other's not, leading to calls to FedEx about why my order is late (it's not) and can I get it at the local station (no); overnight avoids that.

Please show me when apple has ever lowered the price of a product. Excluding new offerings. Maybe you should do some research before you post, so you can seem to know what your talking about.

You are an obvious troll. What kind of dumb statement is that? There is no technology company on this planet that has never lowered their prices. And YOU of all people talk about "doing research", that's ridiculous.

And? 10.5 was delayed twice.

10.5 Leopard was first announced June 6, 2005 at WWDC '05 with an "intended" release window of "late 2006 or early 2007 right around the time when Microsoft is expected to release Longhorn." DELAYED

10.5 Leopard was re-announced August 7, 2006 at WWDC '06 with a "scheduled to ship in Spring 2007" release window. DELAYED

10.5 Leopard was re-announced June 11, 2007 at WWDC '07 with an October release window. FINALLY SHIPPED

Of course we did get 10.2 Jaguar, 10.3 Panther and 10.4 Tiger before Vista finally shipped. 10.1 Puma was released a month before Windows XP. Not to mention, Apple transitioned from PPC to X86 during the time frame also.

Microsoft finally shipped Vista to consumers in January of 2007.

Why are you posting facts? Us fanboys don't care about facts. If you continue to post facts I'll be forced to cover my ears and shout "LA-LA-LA-LA-LA-LA" continuously at the top of my lungs.

So now that we've made clear that this is a NO FACT ZONE, let me tell you want us fanboys believe, and consequently want you to believe, irrespective of facts:

1. Apple is perfect; and
2. Microsoft has never innovated. They only copy Apple; and
3. Apple products are superior in every way to all competition; and
4. The Palm Pre and Android OS should be sued out of existence because Apple invented the concept of touchscreen phones; and
5. Apple should sue Microsoft for having integrated search, similar to spotlight, even though the feature was first demoed by Microsoft in 2004 in an early build of Longhorn. This fact is immaterial, though, because Apple shipped Tiger first, and as you know, fanboy logic being what it is on this matter: we believe this means Microsoft copied Apple's Spotlight idea; and
6. People who install copies of OS X on non-Apple hardware should be criminally charged with violating Apple's intellectual property, because buying a copy of OS X for $129 does not give you the right to use it as you choose. It belongs to Apple, and you must do what they say. Or go to jail.

If there are any other things you have questions about, regarding us fanboys and our immutable opinions on these matters, please shoot me a message.

iPhone $200 price drop September 5, 2007. Perhaps you should refrain from spewing accusations which are directly descriptive of yourself.

I find Paul's site very informative and up to date. But then again I'm not an Apple Fanboy.

"Snow Leopard, like Leopard before it, is a fine OS, a rock-solid and capable computing foundation. It's just that when compared to what's happening on the Windows side, Snow Leopard is sort of a letdown. There's just not much going on from an end-user perspective." Paul Thurrott

I Totally agree.

I think your buddy Paul forgot that windows 7 is improving on a flop - on a complete "letdown" (to use his words) called Vista. Even Billy G hated his own OS, as per that vid we've all seen. Of course things on the Windows side will be more dramatic. Windows users haven't had a decent OS since XP. It's been years. There's been nothing but crickets and catastrophes in Redmond since they delayed Longhorn forever, and then scrapped it.

Snow Leopard improved on an already strong operating system. We've had excellent operating systems since Panther. SL simply improves on what was impressive to begin with.

Oh please. Stop putting Apple on a pedestal. Steve Jobs is not a good samaritan, he is in business to make money. The fact that Apple chooses not to enforce licensing by making users type in an individual key for each copy of the license is not because Steve trusts you, it's because he thinks that in the long run, Apple will make more money by winning over people who will then buy Apple hardware, and not having to spend all kinds of money on staff etc. to verify CD keys etc. License fees are small potatoes compared to hardware purchases. Apple knows anybody who steals the OS has already shelled out hundreds or thousands of dollars on Apple hardware. Other companies, like microsoft, have no such re-assurance, since they sell only software, and thus they need to put more effort into protecting it. Apple is a business like any other. They do what they believe is in their own self-interest at all times. I guarantee that in this regard they are absolutely no different from microsoft, adobe, etc.

I wasn't putting the trust idea in the fluffy human way you're describing. I meant as a business relationship - and one that works. All good business relationships (just like human ones, mind you) are built on trust, are they not?

Okay, I can hear you thinking "Business relationship? You're not Adobe!". No, I'm not Adobe, but we're all voices in a crowd. Apple do push things sometimes and they're *certainly* no saints, but I wonder if they'd be anywhere near as popular if they took to such draconian methods of controlling their customers as the likes of EA and Microsoft.

Ahhh macrumors, where one's childish side shows itself, for all to see. I honestly consider the fact that half of you are on ego trips, judging by the ridiculous things you bicker about.

I trust you include yourself in that half, as your sneering and condesending commentary shows you also to be on your own personal 'ego trip'. Enjoy your trip!

Well he's wrong when he says, "In 2001, Apple let the world know that they were cat people by releasing version 10.0 of their operating system and naming it Cheetah." Cheetah (10.0) and Puma (10.1) were internal codenames only; Jaguar (10.2) was the first cat name publicly marketed.

I wonder if apple will run out of cats?

I thought they already have Lynx and Cougar trademarked. Even if they use only those two, at the rate new OS X versions are coming out it will be 2015 before they need another name.

I vote for Calico or Tabby :)

Actually I believe there was work done on a NeXT prototype running a RISC chipset, it was in the shape of a pyramid...I believe the code name was 'Jaguar'.

So really the whole cat thing started back then. Steve must be a cat person.

If they have two more cats to go, It looks like 10.8 will be the final OS X, then OS XI?

10.7 Tabby?

I just picked up my Snow Leopard from Sydney Apple Store (AUD$39). Steady stream of buyers but no queue to speak of. Lunch time could heat up though.

Will be installing on my iMac tonight after work (first gen Al version - 2.4 with 2 gig ram). Not sure whether to expect noticeable speed changes.

From the mouth of someone who either never used Vista or only used it a few months after release. Vista is far superior to XP and 7 is even better than Vista out of the gate.

Windows 7 and Snow Leopard are fantastic operating systems. At this point it's more about what your personal preferences/needs are than objective quality.

No, it's not theft and illegal. Yes, Mossberg checked with Apple and it told him it was allowed, although it prefers you to pay $170. You want to pay Apple an extra $150 because its marketing says you should?

Back when I bought Leopard at the Apple store, I tried to be a good citizen and explain to the Apple salesdude that I might want to install it on more than one system, so was there a way to pay for the single user license now and upgrade to a multi-user license later? The question was completely incomprehensible to him. After I tried a couple times to explain again, he only muttered that if I wanted to use that disk to install more than one system "it would probably work." I gave up (and as it turned out, never did install it on a second system).

First, I got Leopard via a $10 up to date disc that I copied because my GF at the time got that after buying a MacBook Pro in 2007. The UTD copy did need to verify that I had 10.4 on my machine first before installing. Several other people (my Dad, etc) received it from me. Moral? Not sure. Illegal? Perhaps in a strict letter-of-the-law type way. However, if Apple were hell-bent and serious about it, they would pursue a Microsoft-type approach with serial numbers, activation, etc. The truth is that they really, really don't care. It's like the iTunes Music store. Do they really care that they sell songs? Probably not. Do they care that the store helps to sell iPods? You bet. The only reason they even have copy protected songs is because the music labels made them...and that went away with iTunes Plus now. The same applies to these upgrades: It's nice for them to make money off the OS software (a bonus, in a way), but as long as it helps them overall sell more physical machines, that's all they really care about. That is why they are not so strict with the OS copies.

Second, I have already printed my Fed Ex release for my delivery of 10.6 tomorrow...so obviously someone is planning on dropping it at my door. Can't wait to see if there is a difference on my 2006 MBP with Core Duo.

Third: that $10 UTD thing was a first: I purchased 10.0-10.4 for full price....ok fine, with educational discount, but I was in college!! :D
