Actually, the same accusation of inconsistency can be made of Windows too - just look at IE in Vista, compared to Windows Explorer. Why, Microsoft, why? It just looks weird.

There's more. Windows Media Player (in Windows 7 and Vista) is huge violator of the standard Windows interface. Not to mention, Word 2007, Excel 2007, PowerPoint 2007, Windows Live Photo Gallery (which is sort of a cross between the standard interface and WMP's interface), etc. There's quite a few really.

BTW, the Macworld review also confirms that you can install S.L. over Tiger

I think I just got 'chumped'.

Trying to be fair to Apple and honest with myself I ordered the 'Family Pack' OS X 10.6 because we have two MacBooks in the house.

Now I see that even the millions using Tiger who never even upgraded to Leopard will be able to get SL for less than $30.

Thanks Apple.....NOT !

10.6.1 will be the "must have" upgrade

Not surprising that bugs and quirks have cropped up in the inital release of Snow Leopard. As a typical listener of Mac Break weekly podcast and MR reader, the inital release of a new OS usually comes with it's share of quirks and bugs that need ironing out.

I doubt that the majority of readers here will be dissuaded to buy the new OS right away away unless you have some mission critical tasks.

I for one will snap up SL right after i leave the office tomorrow afternoon at my nearest Apple Store.

I just got a call last night from a friend asking me to come out to visit for the weekend 3 hours away and i said yes, forgetting SL comes out tomorrow.:mad:

Dude, it's your friend. Snow Leopard's not going anywhere, and it's not like there's a ton of new user features that you must dive into.

No they're not. Apple is trying to avoid shipping two separate SKUs. They knew Leopard owners would be upset if Tiger owners could get Snow Leopard for $29 also. So, they made a policy to only allow Tiger owners to purchase the Mac Box Set which is a fantastic deal by itself. You get iLife ($79), iWork ($79) and Snow Leopard ($129) for $149 (at Amazon). If your a Tiger owner, you essentially get iLife and iWork for $10 each (I guess it's $20 each if you buy the $169 bundle from Apple).
They're totally trying to avoid shipping two separate SKUs, except that the retail SL DVD is $29, not $129. And Tiger owners *can* get Snow Leopard for $29 - did Apple honestly think this was going to remain secret? It's a blatant upsell/bundle move, plain and simple - Apple knows that Tiger upgraders would most likely want iLife '09, and saw the opportunity to also move iWork '09 by creating the "boxed set." So they created an artificial "upgrade" scenario explicit to Tiger users and the illusion of getting value by adding three titles together. It's classic retail positioning.

Apple concedes that the $29 Snow Leopard upgrade will work properly on these Tiger-equipped Macs, so you can save the extra $140.

I was so worried about the erase and install option, that I was prepared to get the Box Set version by other means, as I already purchased the 09 "i" apps and Leopard (the above info essentially infers that the option is there, and that both disks are essentially the same).

But, just like Apple and just like the old Tiger "upgrade" disk that's not the case. THANK GOD! That was my main concern about SL, as I upgrade hdds and perform clean installs fairly often. In fact, I may purchase one of those 7200RPM 500gb laptop drives since they are fairly cheap now; to start off my SL experience properly (my drive seems to lock up/click occasionally, could be the HD sleep option, but I'd rather retire it to a secondary backup drive).

It may have already been reported recently, but I haven't seen or heard about it until this morning so this is great news for me. I'll definitly be buying.

I don't ever remember a Mac OS X release except 10.0 that has had so many obvious bugs. Pogue, Mossberg and Macworld all went out of their way to describe some of them.

Some of the bugs are just unacceptable (like the disappearing contextual service menu).

The good news is that all three submitted bug reports to Apple, and those issues should get fixed soon.

Apple doesn't care. Macworld asked them about it, and they confirmed that they didn't want to ship an upgrade disc forcing Mac users to install Leopard, then Snow Leopard. The Rep. said Tiger users should buy the Mac Box Set since they didn't pay the $129 for Leopard. And the Rep. also said the number of Intel Macs that shipped with 10.4 Tiger is small (roughly a 21 month window, Jan. 10 2006 to Oct. 26, 2007). It's part of that whole "we trust our customers" mentality.

I also think they don't want to bother supporting iLife '06 and iWork '06 which is now 3 years old.

Run Windows Without Rebooting?

David Pogue mentions something I have not seen anywhere else...

"When you’re running Windows on your Mac, you can now open the files on the Macintosh “side” without having to restart."

Has anyone else caught this? I even looked on the Apple site and didn't see anything. If this is the case, this is worth $30 just by itself. Imagine this convenience rather than running VM or Parallels? I don't do much in the way of Windows stuff, haven't really needed to, but I would now. I have several items of software related to ministry that would operate only on Windows. If this works like I think it will, then this could be good.

However, he could only be indicating the file would open, which could mean to just look at it, not work in it. Clarification on this point would be great, so if anyone else knows or has seen something, could you share more?

Friends are more important than a minor OS update... ;)

What inconsistencies would you "fix"?

I'm looking at IE8 and Explorer in Win7. They have a lot of common elements (top border is forward/back, address, and search box), but since they accomplish different things there are difference as well.
The button styling, for one thing. Why make it look so strange and different from the rest of the OS? It looks MUCH worse on XP, since that version of Windows does not use the IE7 style buttons.

Finally, Apple has realized peoples dream of simulating how it would be like to run Vista by getting a half baked beta version out of the door for no apparant reason other than maybe because they could. Free with each purchase is an authentic shista experience of BUGS, GLITCHES and oh yes, for no additional cost, CRASHES!

Order now before it is too late, in a month or two 10.6.1 will reduce the Vistaness and in about 6 months it will be completely removed via 10.6.5.

Authentic certificate of shista, yours now for only 29.99! Act now!!

I think I speak for all when I say, thanks Apple, for the wakeup call! After experiencing shista ourself by proxy we'll never ponder to switch back.

Thanks Apple.....NOT !

I bought Leopard Family Pack, knowing I could have installed the same single client disk on the four Macs I have at home. I ordered Snow Leopard Family Pack knowing the same thing.

Besides, a Tiger user, should they comply with the $169 upgrade path, gets $187 worth of software with iWork and iLife. No chumping there, either.

Online , only next week.

According to Apple 800 line (US) SL will be shipped to customers that already bought online, ONLY on the 28, i.e. online users will be receiving their copies only next week. My online status , is still "not shipped". The method will be USPS, i.e. not fast as UPS or FEDEX.

:( for U$ 15.00 more I would get on the Apple store near by my house tomorrow.

I don't understand this comment. I am a switcher 3 years now, but I remember working on apples (OS X?) in school in the early '90s and they have not changed much as far as the average user knowing where things are and such? I would say the same for windows, but when they started there photocopiers that all changed...

- Aqua themed scroll bars
- New shading 'grey' theme in Leopard (see App folder for example)
- Quicktime 'chrome' theme
- New 'desktop' for Widgets (why just them?)
- Itunes interface spreading to some apps (Finder) but not all
- Quicktime is now getting yet another theme (it's a frickin app people!!!)
- What the heck is the deal with the fonts and spacing in the Help Menu????
- Some apps give the spinning beach ball, some still give the hourglass

About the New Finder

Apple writes that they rewrote the Finder using Cocoa. What API was used before?

You guys are behind the times. I'm already testing Mac OS X Lion 10.7 on my prototype MacBook Mini Pro.
